When you hear a beat like this, it makes you want to curse the music industry for being greedy. This type of beat is why sampling was invented and it’s the concentrated essence of hip-hop. That we are so often denied it because a sample doesn’t clear is sad.
I was hesitant to post this album when I was trying to find something seasonal, as I usually think of Christian Rap as pretty lame. That said, I wanted to do these threads to try new stuff (and get other people to do the same) so I figured why not.
That said, this is very much Christian Rap. With the first song sporting a hook of
It’s Christmas time, relax your mind and unwind, yeah
Full of peace, full of joy, I’ll tell you why, yeah (2X)
It’s Jesus Christ, yeah
I was pretty sure I had made a mistake. That said, it honestly kind of grew on me. Came Down is good with something a little soulful on the hook. Then I got to the middle of the album and hit Wisemen. This song goes hard as fuck and I do not care that it is basically a religious story. This is some solid, upper tier, story telling and the beat sounds amazing in my car. Kings Speech was another highlight to me, though the beat was a little overdone? Or maybe the mix was weird, I don’t know exactly what it is but something is slightly off that stops it from being on the level of *Came Down *and Wisemen
Overall, I will probably never listen to this again, but I didn’t hate it. Except Wisemen, which I’ve actually added to my favorites list on Spotify, until Christmas is over.
Ha yeah, tbh this place/the Fediverse is actually pretty wack… I’m sure I’ll keep getting sauced up and posting dumb shit, but I don’t expect much from this place anymore.
the bottom line is Kanye seems to be in a very bad, very dark mental space.
This shit has to stop. No more excuses about mental health, we be doing that since his mom left. It was “funny” when it was just some dumb tweets on Wiz, now not so much.
To just stop giving excuse for a man that keeps bullshittin everyone with the edgy nazi takes and dumb antisemitism shit because he had a rough year. This mf had a rough 15 years at this point, always ranting about wild nonsense.
Mfers love the drama. This is about to be the most commented thread in this communities history, and it’s literally moving us up the Sopuli community list.
Unpopular take but most of the people separating the art are still contributing to his influence. Giving him streams and money will not benefit the world. I liked Kanye but not enough to assist a Nazi supporter, and honestly won’t even go through the minimal effort of pirating his stuff to guilt-free listen to a Nazi supporter.
I get why people want to separate the art, really. I don’t blame them, especially if his music is important to them or helped in bad times. I just personally hate helping awful people cling onto power and relevance for the sake of the art, and can’t help but feel this way.
People do still listen to Lostprophets though. I didn’t really give a fuck about Ian Watkins pre-nonce days, and I give even fewer fucks about him now - but some of the songs are absolutely banging.
I’m not even saying I am anymore. His music used to be important to me and my friends and it’s sad that hearing songs I used to love just leaves a sour taste in my mouth now. Part of me wishes I could go back but it seems it’s too late at this point and he’s irreversibly gone off the deep end. It’s just sad. I can’t separate anymore.
Hot take: I dont find separating the artist from the art at all challenging. Never once have I stopped enjoying art because of something the artist did / said. To me, who they are as a person has nothing to do with my opinion of their art.
Nah, it’s obviously a piece of art. The fact many pieces of art transcend the creators original intent or message proves that once art is created, it is art, not a morsel of anyone.
