Tavarin, in D&D Movie

It's a good fun time. The stakes aren't massive so it feels real. The characters are a lot of fun, and have a good variety to their personalities.

I really liked the visualization of magic, it looks great, and really breathes life into the spells we've played with for years.

And the practical effects are great. The movie uses costumes, props, and setpieces for a lot of creatures and spells which gives it a very real look.

What you do in your DMs is completely up to you though, just don't spam comment sections with "someone send me a link" "me too" etc etc.

Zaphodquixote, in Regarding Piracy
@Zaphodquixote@sh.itjust.works avatar

One problem with that.

Older materials can be out of print, and thus impossible to get any other way.

In print stuff? Makes sense to not pirate (even wotc needs cash flow to function). But stuff that isn’t, it either gets archived and spread via p2p/piracy, or it dies.

Just as an example, I have the original box sets. They’re still usable even, because I’ve taken pains to make sure of that. But if I wanted to run a game with that stuff, it wouldn’t take much for it all to fall apart. It’s irreplaceable without digitizing. And, sure my kid is going to have the choice to sell or keep it, but other people’s kids won’t. Losing the material is a much greater loss to the world than whatever downstream affects piracy of that material may bring.

Brunbrun6766,
@Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world avatar

Listen, I agree with you completely but this is for the sake of lemmy.world at the moment, until .world gives an official policy on piracy, then we have to assume it’s a no for the sake of avoiding legal issues for the admins of the instance. And like I said, what you send to each other in DMs is entirely up to you.

Question: What is the opinion on sending a link to something on 5e.tools ?

Brunbrun6766,
@Brunbrun6766@lemmy.world avatar

Seems fine to me, it's mostly already available tools and fan fixes etc

JiFish,

I'm pretty sure WotC would disagree with you considering it contains verbatim copies of all the 5e books - not just mechanics.

But hey, I'm not complaining - it use it all the time. Just seems like a weird exception to make.

btmoo,

5e.tools is very clearly copyright infringement. Unless wizards changed their licensing recently?

AlataOrange,

Mod said it's cool 😎

Dietlama, in Is there a wiki or repository alternative to dnd beyond.

Whoa. What an amazing resource! I’m an advocate for buying the adventures and sourcebooks, but this so much more straightforward than DnD Beyond for basic reference use, even when you already own the materials!

First off I mean this in a good way. I thought it felt a lot more like a movie of how real life players would play the campaign, rather than an attempt at a movie adaptation of a book. And having played D&D, I think it made the movie more relatable to the core audience.

So definitely recommend it.

Useful link, thanks !

HolyFriedFish, in Good way to incorporate possible missing players?

I don’t have a fun and entertaining way, but I wanted to put in two cents anyway. My husband DMs frequently, and regularly has players miss sessions. Life gets in the way, whatever, no biggie. He always explains players being gone as a story that is told long after it happened - different people remember things slightly differently, sometimes they remember certain important figures being there and sometimes they don’t. They might even argue about it, ten years down the line. To him, every session is just another chapter in a story, told by imperfect people with imperfect memories.

coleseph,

This is so much better than displacer beast rabies, really elegant

Psymonkee, in Good way to incorporate possible missing players?

Alcohol poisoning - drank too much the night before and can’t face the day. They’ll catch up later!

If you must have them with the party you could run them in a supportive role and simply buff the party where possible (bless, guidance) and keep them off the front lines.

If the players trust each other enough you could have one of them run the character in a similar way to lighten your load.

Beyond that others have suggested good ideas: shopping, a job from their holy order, helping someone in town are always classics.

You could perhaps have the guard arrest them for something and have a jail break as well 🤣

danski, in D&D Movie

It is some times campy, but in a good way. It doesn't take itself too seriously. Overall al lot of fun and a lot of great references for fans.

Highly recommend it!

Ellie_The_Nurse, in Balancing a boss fight for an Eloquence Bard!

I dont understand the Min Roll 10 comment.

Other than that, this seems like a chance for your bard to shine! Perhaps they should get the limelight for this one? I’d adjust the DCs with the bard in mind but maybe play up the fact they can only try this because the rest of the party is doing their job in the fight by beating the boss down, etc. ?

phrankygee,
@phrankygee@lemmy.world avatar

Eloquence Bards get to treat any roll on certain charisma skills as a 10, whenever they roll less than a 10. So with expertise and high charisma they can guarantee a roll of 22 or higher in those skills related to eloquent speech.

Usually the DM can set difficulties or even decide if a roll is called for at all, but this module has a chance for diplomacy, and the corresponding DC baked in.

I agree, though, that the correct answer is “Let the eloquence bard do their thing!” The chance to talk the boss down comes in “phases” for a reason. As long as you still have to survive Phase 1 and Phase 2 before you can suggest surrender in Phase 3, you’ll still have an interesting encounter.

And there is always the possibility that by Phase 3, your bard player won’t even think about using diplomacy once the fighting has already been going for a bit.

My group and I went and saw it together, and the consensus from us 6 is that it was awesome!

TigerClawTV, in A Map Maker and Campaign Manager for DnD 5e - OC Self Promotion
@TigerClawTV@lemmy.world avatar

Nice looking app! I see it's specialized for 5e. Is it usable for other systems? (I'm primarily an OSR guy)

Tavarin,
@Tavarin@lemmy.world avatar

You can still build maps and use the multiplayer for any system, but you will have to use the manual dice rolls included in the program and manually edit health for those systems right now, since the back end rolls for actions and saving throws use 5e rules.

I do hope to add other ruleset support, but it took me a few months just to get the 5e rules mostly working, so it will be a while before other rulesets are fully supported.
