My dad, who I did get on well with, died when I was 14.

There were some people that "kept the family together" and some people who would "push it apart" and with time the influence of one group got bigger than the other.
@theautisticcoach@actuallyautistic No (except with my brother), and I often ponder lately whether the reason is related to #autism or not. I imagine that my inability to feel as much empathy as I’d like has something to do with it. Since my mother died in August though, I’ve been reflecting a lot on how my autism was ignored when I was a child, and how that contributed to many of the negative feelings I have about my family.

I have two younger sisters - one I have no contact with, she is a cruel and controlling person and has been since childhood - the other I have rare contact with, we don’t know each other at all and she is either unable or unwilling to develop a relationship. I have regular contact with my mom, but it’s an act of compassion for a lonely elderly person. None of them are people I would choose to spend time with. It took a while to come to peace with it.
@theautisticcoach@actuallyautistic My mother and I get along wonderfully. I have talked to her at least once a week since I moved out (some 30 years ago). When she dies I will be devastated.
I have two sisters...one older than me by 8 years, the other by 4. I get along with both of them, with conditions. The eldest...we don't know each other all that well. The age/gender difference was just too great growing up. We've gotten a little closer as we've aged, but still, not really close.
My other sister is...troubled. She has a history of making shit up, so I really do try to keep my distance from her. Outside of that we get along ok.
My dad died when I was 19, and good fucking riddance. He was a piece of shit.
Cousins may as well be strangers.
I used to say that the best family is the one you choose for yourself, but I apparently did a shite job of that as well since I'm leaving the fuck out of them.
@theautisticcoach@actuallyautistic Not really. Never met my father or his side of my family, cut ties to my mother's side 20 years ago, though I've gotten back in touch with her, but not really actively.
I miss having a chosen family but seems impossible to find and build one...
@theautisticcoach@actuallyautistic Nope, tenuous to respectfully tolerable. But it is more authentic than what I see in many other families (including in-laws).
