@brainpilgrim@theautisticcoach@actuallyautistic I read recently that lots of vitamin d helps so I have been trying to spend as much time in the sun as I can without burning. seems to be helping, but it could also be the exercise? also my immune issues are relatively minor i think maybe
I have a gut like a drainpipe: stuff goes in one end and straight out the other. The only thing that works is a (prescribed) opioid that can be a drug of abuse, so I skip it unless I'm going out or someone's visiting us, and just take the pain.
Probiotics help. Stress-reduction helps. Avoiding tea, coffee and chocolate helps. Hard cognitive work (I'm a software engineer🙄) has the same effect as stress and make it worse, for reasons I don't understand.
Do you have any hints there, please? I already have plenty of wholemeal and a wide variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, I take probiotics, and I eat less processed food than most people. My gut is still a hot mess. Is there anything else I should try?
@markusl@skinnylatte@theautisticcoach@actuallyautistic everyone is different for me cutting out gluten and limiting other grains (including wholemeal) and replacing with pulses helps as does minimising sugars. If I eat those things then I also struggle with alliums but if I don't alliums are fine. I have friends who have found fodmap helpful but I haven't tried it
Thanks! It wouldn't be hard to cut out gluten for a week to see what happens. I know I don't have coeliac disease, but I understand that a negative coeliac test doesn't rule out an intolerance.
I'm not sure Mrs Wife would be happy to live without onions and garlic. 😟
@markusl@skinnylatte@theautisticcoach@actuallyautistic ha, neither am I! Luckily I'm fine with them if I don't mix them with grains and sugar. I forgot that today and had onions then ice cream and so my body has reminded me. Gah!!
@markusl@theautisticcoach@actuallyautistic I know for having discussing about it with other autistics (many articles about this online also) that a lot of us have gut issues (I have GERD and dysphasia). Have you talk about your issues to a doctor? (I know that it’s not an easy subject)
Yes, up to and including consultant level. The docs have tried all sorts. Loperamide (an opioid that has no euphoric effect at the prescribed dose) is the nearest thing to a remedy, but who wants to risk taking opioids every day? So I take it only when I have a specific reason. @theautisticcoach@actuallyautistic
@markusl@skinnylatte@theautisticcoach@actuallyautistic speaking for myself, my gut health is always worse when I'm not exercising regularly. Even just going for a walk or dancing in the living room.... I get the sense that my body gets lazy with digestion if I don't keep the blood moving manually.
@theautisticcoach@actuallyautistic nope nope nope…never in my life. I had to take mineral oil as a kid of 7…I never went to the bathroom at school, so I was always constipated. As a teacher, I basically never had time to go to the bathroom. I now have IBD, UC, and GERD/Barrett’s Esophagus plus chronic urinary tract problems. I’ve been having scopes (upper and lower) since my 20s.😑
@markusl@theautisticcoach@actuallyautistic I read an article that people are doing research on how bathrooms in schools are so bad for kids’ GI & urinary health… I was like “no shit” (literally) My 2 sons never went to the bathroom at school, & my husband says he never did either. Most kids won’t unless it’s an emergency b/c there’s no privacy, bullying goes on & not any time, unless they leave class. Most teachers won’t let them leave class. I always did, b/c I knew what it felt like.
