Now in the midst of the fun part of grant writing: blue sky discussions with a small core team and a deadline far, far away still.

We could do anything! Not yet locked into ideas and budgets, just dreaming away...

Two full-time permanent posts: Lecturer in Archaeology and Digital Humanities, and Lecturer in History and Digital HUmanities, University of Sheffield. Note that the ad completely overlooks the closure of the Archaeology Department from Sept 2024 and presumably the post is primarily based in the Digital Humanities Institute. Closing date 15 Jan 2024. Details at:

'The number of retractions issued for research articles in 2023 has passed 10,000 — smashing annual records — as publishers struggle to clean up a slew of sham papers and peer-review fraud.'

Not sure if this happens but there should be a red banner on journal article download pages stating 'retracted'. I don't think most people will check before citing, and there should be alerts in reference management systems too.

The downside of having zoom-only meetings is that if the power goes out, you can’t attend the meeting.

Note: this is also the upside of zoom-only meetings 🙃

Really enjoyed reading this article from Oishi and Westgate on “A Psychologically Rich Life”. As a potential third dimension next to Hedonic (Pleasure) and Eudaemonic (Meaning) Wellbeing, they posit the notion that Psychological Richness leads to Wisdom. It allows for a reframing of experiences that don't fit the happy/meaningful box, but do add to increased wisdom in life.

I'm working on a blog post to be more coherent about this...

Let’s pretend Gaza is not happening …

[…] There are many who self-censor because they got advice from senior colleagues or from administrators not to say anything that might be interpreted offensively by people, and it wouldn't be good for their careers, particularly assistant professors and graduate students.

[…] We had a lot of colleagues who said they were not invited when the university held events on their very issue of expertise because they were worried that their views may not conform to what is needed on campus.

I've checked the intertubes, but as far as I can tell there has never been a punishment again Jewish organisations on US campuses for calling for a one-state solution, blindly supporting Zionism, more settlements on the West Bank, or refugee concentration camps.
Even though right-wing Jewish groups have done just that.

There are definitely people in higher education that know how to teach, research effective practices and effectively communicate those results. We just need more.

I’m just commenting from my experiences in higher education. Did my undergrad, grad, and post-doc at primary research institutions. Taught a number of semesters at a local community college. By far the most effective training I received for effective teaching was at the CC.

New study warns "that protracted PhDs and lengthy postdoctoral stints are holding back even the best scientists from 'achieving independence and tenure'."

Author argues that "universities should have more flexible rules that allow them to promote people quicker if they prove to be 'really outstanding in their early steps' [...and that] funding should shift to younger scientists,"

@erinnacland @academicchatter @ingorohlfing How does such a laudable goal contribute to the university's paramount goal: Institutional aggrandizement? I can't see that it does. Seems the university's goal is best served by maintaining PhD wannabes as a powerless and dependent money stream.

Is free speech in trouble on college campuses?

The controversy over university presidents who gave lawyerly answers in Congress about punishing students who call for genocide reflects the reality of college free speech codes that try to both encourage debate and stop hatred.

A expert provides some needed context:

Remember that nice thing I said about the University of system Board of Regents? Well, I take it all back. After intense political pressure, including threats from billion (yes, with-a-b) dollar donors, the Regents caved in to Republican demands to roll back activities and positions in exchange for pay raises (and other investments). SHAME ON YOU, REGENTS. Your job is to protect the university, not to give in to hostage-takers. @academicchatter https://www.channel3000.com/news/in-second-vote-uw-board-of-regents-approves-funding-dei-deal/article_431ce82e-9a0e-11ee-a38b-eb5521c5b321.html

Here's the problem... we often say we want to move away from glam publishing. But how many of those retraction were in the top journals, and how many in Hindawi, MDPI and Frontiers? For me, the papers I trust enough to bother to read are in the journals I trust. Not quite the Natures or the sciences, but the trusted disciplinary journals. Th we genome biologies and molecular cells. But this feeds journal based judgements.

Happy to share that today I received the Instructional Innovator of the Year trophy at Morgan State University.

I guess my work with virtual language exchanges and open educational resources have also contributed to this award.

I am excited about it as this is only my third year at Morgan. I wanted to share my happiness with you. #academia @academicchatter #OER #VirtualExchange

Argh. Why have university websites become so opaque that you have to be a ninja just to find a list of departments, schools, and faculties? When you finally do, faculty are hidden away behind opaque tabs.

University websites now seem a shell to attract research partners, donors, and (ostensibly) students, forgetting their main function is still to produce knowledge and teach and learn.

It shouldn't take long to find basic info - who's doing what and in which fields.

Our school did something similar a few year ago and folks have quickly learned that no one will scroll past a certain point. So now we have template designs geared for long scrolling that everyone uses for brief content and it's... not great.
