Google has been on a steady downward trend for several years now, to the point where it's getting nearly unusable.

It still works relatively well in English, but have you tried searching in other languages?? It's hot garbage. Google does not know the difference between Japanese and Chinese even in 2023.

Foolonthehill, in Is anyone using Google search less than before?

I use it as a fallback if I can't find anything (usually searching specific errors) but 90% of my searches are through brave.com now

It's a shame they're run by a shitty person because their products are actually really good.

I haven’t used it as my main search engine in years. VERY rarely I escape hatch to google search for weird queries. That used to sometimes work, now it never seems to work (or my queries have gotten more niche over time hah)

GreenPlasticSushiGrass, in Is anyone using Google search less than before?
@GreenPlasticSushiGrass@kbin.social avatar

I've been using it less because I constantly get challenged with captchas when trying to use it with my VPN. I like DDG's privacy, but I'm not fond of it as a search engine. I heard good things about Brave search. I've been using their browser for about a year, so I may as well give their search engine a try.

Pankakke, (edited ) in Is anyone using Google search less than before?

I’ve been trying a few different alternatives namely Qwant and Startpage. I find Qwant to be the quickest of those two and have been using it most often. Trying to get away from the google ecosystem as much as possible, searches are getting bogged down even with an adblocker.

NotTheOnlyGamer, in Is anyone using Google search less than before?

My primary search engine is rarely Big G. More often than not, if I can't find what I'm looking for by SERP 4 on DDG(Bing), I'll figure out what the missing keyword was, and edit the query. I've also been using Brave search some, but their connection to crypto bugs me enough that I don't want to rely on them.

If I really do need Google, I use Millionshort, with the full million excluded.

Cloudless, in How do I shrink/expand comments? Also how do I see parents comment?
@Cloudless@kbin.social avatar

If you use Firefox, install the tampermonkey extension, and then install the following script:
https://greasyfork.org/en/scripts/468923-kbin-improved-collapsible-comments

There should be similar extensions for other browsers.

seedot11,

Amazing, thank you!

Yewb, in Is anyone using Google search less than before?

When I do use google I almost immediately go to the second page, like I dont even read the adverts im immune to it.

b00m, in How do I shrink/expand comments? Also how do I see parents comment?
@b00m@kbin.social avatar

If you want to see the parent comment, select "tree view"

Cloudless,
@Cloudless@kbin.social avatar

How do you select "tree view"?

The hamburger / three sheets icon on the top right of the top comment.

I felt the same a year or two ago an have used DuckDuckGo almost exclusively since. I believe DDG is a private frontend for Bing, but I may be wrong.

SpaceNoodle,

That’s correct, it’s Bing under the hood.

stopthatgirl7, in How do I shrink/expand comments? Also how do I see parents comment?
@stopthatgirl7@kbin.social avatar

I don’t think it’s possible to shrink/expand comments on kbin. Iirc, it’s coming later, but isn’t ready yet.

iamsgod,

ah bummer. thanks

cruspies, in Can we have one day without talking about poop?
@cruspies@kbin.social avatar

I'm part of a health study in the UK that recently did a poo study as well. I didn't take part, but this week we got the results. So now I know what areas of the country have the most and least frequent pooing. There are also stats on constipation and diarrhea, and length of time sitting on the toilet. I'm happy to copy and paste if anyone is interested.... though given the post title, maybe I'll keep it to myself, lol.

wurzelwerk, in Is anyone using Google search less than before?
@wurzelwerk@kbin.social avatar

I kind of like https://swisscows.com

Cap,
@Cap@kbin.social avatar

@wurzelwerk Did a search on some car issues I'm having and the first link was better than anything on the first page of Google.

roofuskit, in How to block a domain
@roofuskit@kbin.social avatar

This is odd. I did exactly what you describe to several instances and get no content from them. For feddit.de i blocked individual magazines because they have some English language ones that I want to see.

Nepenthe,
@Nepenthe@kbin.social avatar

Super odd. I have some 3-4 domains blocked atm, one of them grossly prolific with an emphasis on gross, and I've never seen anything from them since. Otherwise, I would have caught on, mentioned it's broken, and stopped bothering

themadcodger, in How to block a domain
@themadcodger@kbin.social avatar

And feddit is showing up in your blocked domains section in settings now? I haven't been blocking many domains, but I've had no problems with people and magazines going away.

Raffster, (edited )

Yes it's in the block list.
(the people and magazine blocks work fine)
