man_in_space, in What questions do you hate being asked and why?
@man_in_space@kbin.social avatar
  • Where do you see yourself/what do you want to be doing in $NUMBER years? (How am I supposed to know?)
  • When are you going to find a woman and settle down? (Never, I’ve never had my feelings requited)
  • What happened that you’re feeling $MOOD? (I’m bipolar, a lot of the time it just happens)
  • Who did you vote for? (I don’t)
  • Anything about sex (I’ve never had it)
  • Pretty much anything my mother asks me…I love her but she peppers me with questions like a flechette round
TheArstaInventor, in The year is 2030, astronauts have for the first time landed on Mars, they found a cave with human skeletons, and a message written on the wall. What does it say?

"Don't trust Elon"

Behaviorbabe, in What's your opinion on downvotes?

I want a community that values feedback. Downvotes are a form of feedback (low response effort too!) that anyone who is a part of that can choose to engage with, even people who don’t want a comment history at all. I have used them in the past to reflect on myself, and the community I was a part of as well.

ArtieShaw, in The year is 2030, astronauts have for the first time landed on Mars, they found a cave with human skeletons, and a message written on the wall. What does it say?
@ArtieShaw@kbin.social avatar

"We were not mission critical."

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stars_on_Mars I'm watching it and I'm only slightly ashamed.

D-list celebrities (I'm being generous) compete to win something. I'm not sure what they win. An escape from irrelevance? It's sort of hosted by William Shatner, who reads pre-taped clips to setup challenges and introduce new contestants. And let me tell you, he earned all $500 he was paid to do it.

I'd never heard of 90% of the people involved, which makes it easier to point and laugh. Lance Armstrong is on it and (surprise) he's a toxic asshole. Andy Richter (who I liked back when he controlled the universe) is on it and he's also a bit of an ass.

In any case, it will now be my headcanon that the rejected stars aren't rescued and sent back to Earth, but are forced to die in a Martian cave. And that Shat knew the whole time.

IronCorgi, in The year is 2030, astronauts have for the first time landed on Mars, they found a cave with human skeletons, and a message written on the wall. What does it say?

Don't mess with time.

Zeppo, in Why doesn't kbin federate [lemmit](https://lemmit.online/), a Reddit to Lemmy/fediverse crossposting instance?

I don’t think people really want a bunch of automated reddit reposts. The posts seem to draw little engagement. It adds up to the oddest way to use reddit, and if you want to use reddit, might as well just go there.

champe20,

It should be the user's choice where to go. And while I love kbin and Lemmy, it doesn't have the shear mass of content of Reddit. With something like lemmit, you can fix that by bringing in the content without leaving kbin or supporting Reddit.

Just finished pushing Update V2, check original post new edit for changelog, the above is one of the changes that was implemented. Thank you for your feedback again!

Gordon_Freeman, in How can I send a bulk text (same thing to 300 ppl) without putting them in a group?
@Gordon_Freeman@kbin.social avatar

what about an email?

roofuskit, in What is something that can be considered as bad as smoking, but people still do it anyways?
@roofuskit@kbin.social avatar

Alcohol is by far the most detrimental drug to both individuals and society and yet is the most socially accepted. Of course that last part is why it's the most detrimental.

kersploosh, (edited ) in How do I contact an instance’s sysadmins?

In a browser, visit a Lemmy instance's main page. The admins are listed in the sidebar. Note their usernames.

Still in a browser, go to your home instance and login. Hit the search magnifying glass in the top right corner, and do a user search for whichever admin you want to message. You may have to type in their whole ID in the form @exampleuser@instancename. When their name comes up in the search results, click on it and you should see a "Send Message" button as part of their profile.

Destragras, in What's your opinion on downvotes?
@Destragras@kbin.social avatar

To copy and paste my comment from another thread regarding down votes:

I never really saw the point of downvotes/reduces on Lemmy and Kbin. There isn't an equivalent of those actions on other Fediverse projects (except if you count reactions on Pleroma) and it causes problems like what you have described [in the thread the OP was describing being downvote bombed through no fault of their own].
I use the kbin enhancement script's option to hide the reduce button because I have no reason to touch it.

Reddit has downvotes as a means of rating down content that doesn't contribute to the discussion or is spammy, but it tends to be used as a lazy "I disagree" button that attracts bandwaggoning. Why put in the effort to explain why you disagree with something when you can just hit the down arrow and be done?

I do not know what the intended purpose of downvotes/reduces is here on Kbin. Is it a lazy disagree button or is it like what Reddit intends where comments and posts that don't contribute should be downvoted?

willya, in What's your opinion on downvotes?
@willya@lemmyf.uk avatar

Some of the best viewing of posts/discussions come from sorting controversially, which is coming. Downvotes are required for this. I like downvotes. I even think it’s pretty funny when people get so mad about being downvoted. I do not agree with the kbin way of making them all visible though.

bbmb, in cheap janky tablet reccs?
@bbmb@kbin.social avatar

If you're intending to purely stream games or something along those lines, you might want to look at one of those really cheap Fire tablets, new or used. They clearly are intended with planned obsolescence in mind unfortunately, but as long as you get one from 2015 after, you probably shouldn't have any issues with app compatibility. Do note that if you plan on rooting or installing Linux, they aren't that great of an option as their process is strange and complicated.

In terms of running Linux on, there are a few Atom-based cheap 8-10 inch tablets from Dell and other manufacturers that you can buy for dirt cheap used, and they could probably serve your purpose quite well.

wagesj45, in Is Kbin a right solution for a blog?
@wagesj45@kbin.social avatar

Repost from this comment...

I use Publii. It is a static site generator, and it's open source. In my opinion, statically generated sites are superior for a lot of purposes. You can upload the generated site to any web hosting service. It doesn't include any trackers. It actually only produces the content you ask it to.

It is also very easy to use. The interface is a lot like what you'd expect if you're familiar with Wordpress or similar. If you have an existing Wordpress blog, you can import it and keep all your content.

My blog is generated by Publii. There is no code running on the server, it is all plain HTML. I run a self hosted tracking service myself, but I had to intentionally add it to the footer of the generated pages.

I know the term enshittification, but I'm wondering what Medium and Substack are doing specifically to earn the title of enshittified
