Sharmat, in What is the most Successful Lie in History?

I’d say the Donation of Constantine

It was a forged Imperial Roman decree supposedly from Emperor Constantine the Great, which gave all temporal power over the Western Roman Empire to the Pope. Now, how is this important? This was how the papacy came into possession of the Lateran Palace, which was the Pope’s residence for much of history. It also served as the justification for the pope to break the formal convention of the five episcopal sees (i.e in the early church, Rome was just one of the important seats of power, the others were: Constantinople, Jerusalem, Alexandria and Antioch and all had equal authority) and declare itself supreme over the other centres. It also played an important role in the events of the Great Schism of 1054 (which formally separated the Western Latin church from the Eastern Greek church) and the investiture crisis in the 11th to 13th centuries.

Oooh, that's fascinating

Xariphon,

You could've just said Christianity, as a whole.

jarrn,

And you could have read a really interesting part of history...

Way to make me learn. On social media.

Seriously though, thanks for this great comment!

Drusas,

If you subscribe to the right subs/magazines/communities/whatever, there is a ton to learn. History, science, archeology, sociology, psychology, medicine, marine biology, mycology, geography, foreign languages, programming.... On and on and on. Social media doesn't have to be utter crap.

I'm trying to rebuild my sources after losing the useful ones on Reddit. Which ones in Lemmy/Kbin can you recommend?

EmptyRadar, in Why do some people have a extreme hate for Furries?

I don't hate anything or anyone. But generally I have disdain for anyone who makes one aspect of their personality their WHOLE personality. Even that I can take, as long as it isn't then being forced upon me just for being in the same vicinity. I don't do that with my opinions / beliefs / whatever, so I just want that same treatment in public places.

Edit: For the record, I don't see the above-described as being true of most furries or even most people in general. There are annoying people in every group / subculture though.

EmptyRadar, in What's your favorite movie/serie/TV show opening credit ?

It will always be TNG for me, but all the Star Trek shows have great intros IMO.

SPACE

The final frontier...

EmptyRadar, in What’s a place from your childhood that doesn’t exist anymore?

I'm getting old enough now where this is true for multiple things, but the ones that come to mind would be my schools - 2 of the 3 schools I attended have since been demolished. My high school is still standing, but the elementary and Junior High schools are gone now.

EmptyRadar, in What is the most Successful Lie in History?

God.

Edgy I know, but if we're talking all of Human history, that would have to be it.

RealAccountNameHere, in What animal or insect going extinct would have the greatest impact on the ecosystem?
@RealAccountNameHere@beehaw.org avatar

I'm not a biologist, but I feel like krill would be a strong contender, considering what percentage of ocean creatures rely on them for food.

MadCybertist,
@MadCybertist@kbin.social avatar

This is an interesting take. I haven’t heard krill before.

YolkBrushWork402, in What animal or insect going extinct would have the greatest impact on the ecosystem?
@YolkBrushWork402@kbin.social avatar

I know it's already on the post but I'll say it.

Bees

To put it simply

"the availability and diversity of fresh produce would decline substantially, and human nutrition would likely suffer. Crops that would not be cost-effective to hand- or robot-pollinate would likely be lost or persist only with the dedication of human hobbyists."

"In Europe alone, 84% of the 264 crop species and 4,000 plant varieties exist thanks to pollination by bees. Some attribute the following quote to Albert Einstein: "If the bee disappeared off the face of the Earth, man would only have four years left to live.""

Bees are very important, you kill them off and Humans would die

We would be fine without Mosquitoes tho

MadCybertist,
@MadCybertist@kbin.social avatar

Is there another pollinator that could take their place?

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Not really. Flies do a surprising amount of pollination but they are not interested in the same things that bees are, or as diligent.

FrostBolt,
@FrostBolt@kbin.social avatar

frikkin slackers!

tinwhiskers,
@tinwhiskers@kbin.social avatar

Bats are responsible for a lot of pollination too.

Most of our essential crops are wind pollinated (e.g. rice, wheat, corn) or asexual (potatoes). Colony collapse disorder is a real problem of course and colony management/replacement really eats into profitability, but domesticated bees won't become extinct because we so intensively manage them - however other species may be in real trouble. In addition, if we remove the main human causes of colony collapse (neonicotinoids?), they can potentially recover quite quickly, so it's not a problem that takes hundreds or thousands of years to fix, like some others - if we have the will to do it.

livus,
@livus@kbin.social avatar

Bees are already dying in great numbers.

Allowing the mass scale production and deployment of chemicals that kill bees really is the real life version of feeding crops with Brawno in Idiocracy.

NotAPenguin,

Reminder that "bees" doesn't just mean honeybees.
Honeybees are actually bad for most place, they out compete native pollinators and fuck up ecosystems.

Crazytrixsta, in What animal or insect going extinct would have the greatest impact on the ecosystem?

Ants

KbinItTogether,
@KbinItTogether@kbin.social avatar

The first thing I thought about seeing this post was the scene in .

Froyn,

idk what they do, but with so many its bound to be important.

Crazytrixsta,

I’d honestly be worried about the sheer weight of all the ants disappearing at once affecting the earth.

WytchStar, in What’s a place from your childhood that doesn’t exist anymore?
@WytchStar@kbin.social avatar

There's no grave marker for the old mall in my home town. Just a new, totally different mall.

An elementary school was torn down and a replacement built right next to it, on the same grounds. The old school I attended is now the new parking lot.

The church I attended as a child is gone. Luckily my belief was torn down years before that happened.

In essence my high school doesn't exist, at least not as it did. It was dramatically reconstructed and hardly resembles the school I went to.

Of course these were things that were old when I knew them, and only continued to age to the point they needed replacing. The oldest stuff in my home town though, will outlast me.

My elementary school closed down. Good riddance, honestly.
