Oh yea I don't mind paying, I'm not on fiverr to be cheap lol. Maybe I need to take a deeper look, most people on fiverr I had trouble with if what I wanted them to make me was more complicated than like a one sentence description lol. So I've never successfully had web design done off it.

However for things that require little to no explaining like getting a portrait made it's been awesome.

A stand-alone media file renamer/organizer with a nice webui that supports hard links.

Since I automate my torrent downloads I basically use the arr suite for just renaming and organizing which kinda over complicates things.

The Diablo clickbait is unreal, is the enshitification of the internet reaching the gaming communities now? (kbin.social)

Does everyone just think they can make a living playing games? Trying to search for Diablo 4 info gets you nothing but mountains of useless clickbait youtube videos. Gotta waste my time jumping thru the video just to find out the guy is dumber about the game than I am....

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

Cause you gotta get dem "views". Don't forget to smash that subscribe button.

The format makes no sense for the information being consumed, it's like this for their benefit not the viewers.

Even the Maxroll build guides are like, oh yea go view our youtube video to get all the info.

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

As someone who's not an auditory/visual learner I feel personally attacked by this. I skipped class and stayed home and read the book/notes for a reason.

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

I mean I would argue it's related, the reason behind it is $$$. Corporate interests have homogenized content and de-normalized diversity and community.

People who use to just post their excel sheets and research on some bb forum for free somewhere starting getting paid by icy veins or maxroll. Overtime they establish a monopoly on the content and can do whatever the hell they want.

Why make a platform that depends on the community and you get the ad views when you can adopt a business strategy that also gets you youtube and social media views while eliminating your competition.

And the youtube trend is just people trying to emulate the handful of people who managed to make it big off the twitch/youtube bag.

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

The difference is the decreasing availability of alternatives.

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

Rofl, it's a hobby, you do it for fun, you shouldn't need to get paid. I also play tennis as a hobby and I love to talk to people about it without charging them money believe it or not. The fetishization with internet fame, views, and money is making gaming weird.

I mean back when I was more into gaming I would contribute. I didn't expect money, I just did it because I was fun. I feel like there's a big disconnect between the current generation and my generation that wrote 300 page guides on gamefaqs for the hell of it rofl.

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

I just use an external wiki/pastebin and put links to it on my community sidebar and one pinned post.

@zebus@kbin.social avatar

Oh I get it, and I wasn't even blaming kbin, for all we know the issue is on lemmy's side, they have an open github issue for non-lemmy federation. I'm just saying the ecosystem as is relies on two separately developed platforms maintaining interoperability with each other.

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

Nice, I might just do that plus the Grammarly free, just want to do some technical writing for my community wiki and wanted it to sound good lol

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

I agree, I wouldn’t use the always on feature, would just be for a specific project.

I spilt coffee all over my keyboard this morning and it’s all sticky, since it didn’t break can I just pour water on it to help the stickiness?

I know that sounds like a stupid ass question. I have the Logitech wireless mx keys. I wiped the keyboard down so the surface of the keys aren’t sticky, just hard to press down and some have a spasm....

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

Funny story, I spilt coke all over my first mechanical keyboard. I tried everything to fix it, water, rice, alcohol. After all that it still felt horrible so I ended up just buying a new one. But I didn't throw it away, I just stuck it in my closet where it remained for years.

Then approximately 8 years later, I take it out, randomly decide to try typing on it.. its perfect. Felt just like it did when it was new, I dunno if the sugar just broke down or degraded over time or what, but it was fixed.

So if nothing else, just put it into storage for a decade and then try it out again lol.

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

I mean I wouldn't bc I hate being wasteful, but chances are those switches and keycaps were cheap as hell so not necessarily a bad financial deicion, like you said it was cheaper than keychron without swiches and caps.

Plus you can always use the switches for a side project like a macropad or something.

Just in case anyone is using their account here to post to off-instance communities: those posts and comments seem to have a very high failure rate. Torrents, I like the community and indefinite retention. And with 1gbps home connections becoming more common staying in ratio has become way easier.

It's a really fun time to self-host today

I've never had so much fun self-hosting. A decade or so ago I was hosting things on Linode and running all kinds of servers for myself but with the rise of cloud services, I favored just giving everything to Google. I noticed how popular this community was on Reddit/Lemmy and now it's my new addiction....

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

Yea between the enshitificaiton of the internet and how far selfhost software has come it is a great time to selfhost and will just keep getting better.

Selfhosting, reddit drama, kbin, all this just makes it seem like the internet is having a sort of grassroots, back to basics movement which I'm all for lol.

  1. Follow docker install guide for raspi
  2. Browse awesome-selfhosted and find services that seem interesting to you or ask for recs here.
  3. Follow the projects guide to do a docker install
  4. (Bonus) Setup a reverse proxy like nginx proxy manager so you can access your services with urls
  5. (Bonus) Setup domain and a service such as Tailscale so you can access your services safely from outside your home.

Man the general trackers are such a shit show. Back in the day I had my TL ratio drop randomly and I logged in just to see there were a bunch of downloads logged to my account that weren't me. Went in their IRC to point it out their shit was fucked and they got all defensive and tried to make it seem like I was trying to pull something malicious on them. I just quit the site out of spite after that and went inactive.

Then I joined IPT which is sketch af, but then one day I just logged in to find my account was deleted and they wanted money or some shit to get a new one, so naturally I was outta there.

.. Now I just dont have a general tracker.. I guess I should be paying attention to the suggestions here too lol

PS
I miss SCC

  • Owner and staff known to be questionable assholes
  • They did questionable stuff to try and make it to the top like astroturfing with fake accounts and stealing peers from other trackers
  • They were one of first to start charging for signups
  • The fact they state that they delete accounts and your only option is to make a new one
  • Around the time they started charging a lot of people like myself found our accounts mysteriously gone and them wanting us to pay to get on the site again (I remember being pissed and going to reddit to complain and reading similar stories there)
  • Basically the site is really scummy and did whatever they had to do to become big so that they could make money and grift the community and is not inline with the principals most other private tracker communities promote.
  • IPT Browser..
  • They had a $5/ticket raffle that it's believed the winners were fake IPT accounts

Honestly, I could probably keep this up all day if I kept thinking about it but imma stop here.

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

You know.. that's not a bad idea, I just need a general tracker for dumb stuff that's now allowed on my niche trackers such as cams, Usenet would be perfect for that.. time to go down the rabbit hole and figure it all out again lol

Just curious, is bear still popular and actively developed? I moved to Obsidian a long time ago and never bothered to check back on it.

Yea my gf at the time all the sudden started complaining that putting stuff up the butt was painful, so I put my finger in my own butt to prove that it's not painful at all and she probably had developed a medical condition like anal fissures or something. And I was right, it was literally like 0/10 painful.

There's also the longer term effect that could be in play of the content pool drying up and driving users away, those changes are reverberations and wouldn't be having a dramatic immediate effect.

Right now if anything I'd expect views to be spiking due to the content generated from the drama itself. Once that dies out then damages to content generation from driving away users will be more evident.

I've just accepted it's my personality type and I jump around hobbies. People are built different, I'm sure the people who can focus 1000 hours on a hobby have other things they wish they did different. Embrace yourself and how your brain works when it comes to your leisure time.

That being said if I have something I want to focus on for self-growth/productivity reasons I use bullet journaling to hold myself accountable and stay on track. It's helped a lot.

Yea I'm trying to get away from the political bias and echo chambering a singular news source gives you, but at same time like aggregators for being time efficient. That ground.news another person shouted out actually seems really interesting and to fit the bill. It gives you multiple viewpoints of each trending news story and labels what bias they are leaning.

zebus,
@zebus@kbin.social avatar

True true, maybe I just need a good mixture in an rss, decent aggregator + my own curated primary news sources. Tbh the thing I like best about a good aggregator is it’s kinda like Reddit, occasionally you will get a great off the wall article from a a source you would of never of followed or had on your own rss. Such as a local news for somewhere you don’t even live.

Another update from MW, Mechs&Co. hasn’t paid for any of their keycap sets, yikes.

Official statement from geekhack and r/mk:

@zebus@kbin.social avatar

Yea I remember when I got into the hobby there were basically zero in-stock gmk sets or higher end boards. People wanted $100 over msrp for used items on mechmarket. I had to wait and be fast enough on an extra drops of each to pull off my first build. Now you got keysets and boards that delivered months ago and still have extras available.

But we don't know these guys situations, who knows, maybe they quit their day jobs to pursue this, they probably weren't in a position to think about it as rationally as you are.

The part that shocks me even more than that is how clamming up and going unresponsive is becoming the go to signature move. You think it would be common sense that to come out ok on situations like these you have to get ahead of it, going silent and just letting people gossip and speculate is just going to make things worse. Even if the situation was horrendously bad, you'd still be better off communicating.

Look at the Aeternus guy, he stole all the gb funds bc he had a "personal emergency". Dude was so beloved by the community that he still has people to this day defending him online even tho he ghosted months ago. Chances are had he just been upfront he probably could of set up a gofundme and got whatever money he needed, I literally don't even understand the logic hoops these guys are jumping thru.

Like I'm guessing the reason my GMK Moonlight from Mechs&Co hasn't shipped is they probably never ordered the deskmats and absorbed the funds since that was the one thing that was on them to order. If I just had a way to contact them, hell, I'd tell them to just cancel the deskmat and keep the money and send me my base set. But I can't. We're an understanding community, we get it, but it's like people are going out of their way to put themselves in the least defensible position possible.
