After reading the “issues” discussion from w weeks ago, this is just an idea at this point. The simplemobiletools fork was a mock up for something that sounds like its very much in the planning/ideas stage. you can also go to fossify.org to see another mock up that does nothing right now. You could message one of them, but I think maybe its some MIT software team / group & their just tossing ideas around for a foss hub of sorts.
I don’t think any builds have been compiled yet. I have no real knowledge how, but but you could build your own by downloading developer tools an cloning the codebase. Probably better just to wait. How were you downloading Simple Mobile Tools previously?
If you have the apps from F-Droid, there is no need to rush, I think. The F-Droid-apps are without adds and offline. They no longer receive updates, but they are not apps that need constant updates.
Here’s a little hack if you do have to use youtube:
Every ad you swipe down, close video, restart,… After a couple of times doing that, the abuse-filter kicks in and it will just show you the video. If you keep doing that a while, ads just stop for a while as it thinks it’s being abused. 😅
Probably will stop working one day too, but still works for me today.
It Stands for: fully open source software As far as I know. And it describes software which is with all its components open source. But as this memes suggests there is an ongoing debate on how heigh the standards have to be in order to call something foss
Nah, FOSS stands for “free and open-source software”. There was a time before paid software was a thing, so the “free” there stands for freedom.
In a lot of ways, it means the same as open-source (access to source code and allowed to modify+redistribute it), but it’s more idealistic and political, looking to prevent software from restricting what users can do.
The steamdeck-like hardware market is going to explode and they are fools for not putting in even a tiny amount of effort there. Yeah a lot of steamdeck form factor devices will run windows, but idk linux has passed a critical threshold where windows just looks less and less attractive as an OS to base this kind of device around.
It doesn’t really matter how well Valve does or doesn’t do in the near term, the existence of the steam deck right now as a functional, easy to use gaming device irrevocably changes the pc gaming market. In the future kids are going to get these things before their parents shell out for a gaming pc, they are the clear gateway step into pc gaming because you can always buy a nice pc down the road and have all the same games to play as you do on your handheld.
It will increasingly matter more and more what multiplayer action game you can pick up and get running most easily on a steamdeck-like linux device to play with your friends. Right now for example Halo Infinite is pretty perfectly situated, it doesn’t have much competition for being the easy to get into steam deck multiplayer shooter choice.
