Sounds like you haven’t watched a lot of free to air tv haha

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

I hardly watch it either. Just found it funny all the complaints above could be applied to what free to air tv has been doing for decades.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

Yet they still get around it through sound mixing. Any regulations against using jingles or having ads interrupt what you’re watching?

The event is being held 4 Oct, so shouldn’t be much longer.

I had the same thing. It seemed to be a couple times spread throughout the week and it hasn’t happened in about two weeks.

At the time opening the wallet app seemed to make it work. But not sure what was causing it all of a sudden.

The only thing I could think is that I may have been using battery saver at the time, or at some point that day. Do you know if you had been?

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

This bug was happening doing that. I never usually open the app either. I was having to because of this bug to try fix it.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

You realise it’s a work of fiction right?

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

If they’ve improved the battery, I’m in.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

I didn’t realise heat up time was such an issue. Maybe there’s differences in countries power supply as well. In Australia, my BDB is ready to go in under 5 min.

Just moved from Motorola, any worthwhile tools to emulate moto flashlight and camera gestures?

All I find is suggestions from a few years ago, so probably outdated or maybe there appeared some better tools in the meantime, there are some apps in the play store but I need something good privacy wise, no training demon, also small battery life impact would be nice...

What is/are Moto Flashlight and Camera gestures? And what phone do you now have?

Google just made it a lot easier for people to begin automating their smart home (www.engadget.com)

Google has really tried to go all in on automation since the rollout of its redesigned Home app in May. There’s been the introduction of a new script editor, Nest Cam Indoor integration and, now, a whole slew of new routines to use. The company has announced 18 new routines — half starters and half actions — immediately...

It’s not a walled garden, it’s kind of the opposite. You can connect devices regardless of brand and it’s a server you can run locally. In theory you wouldn’t need to update it or ever connect it to the internet again, as long as your devices can run locally.

If you have an old laptop or a raspberry pi 4, you can always give it a try before scrapping what you’re currently using.

The Culture series by Iain M. Banks.

Not sure what it was. Maybe expectations were too high. Tried the first two books and they were fine, just didn’t really trigger anything in me that made me want to keep going.

Microsoft’s Xbox Series S Parity Demands Are Now Handing Sony Free Wins (www.forbes.com)

At the start of this console generation, Microsoft made a surprising decision. Rather than split its consoles between disc and digital-only like Sony, it actually split them between power level. The Xbox Series S was cheaper, but lacked the horsepower of the more expensive Series X. It was meant to be a bridge between...

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

Let’s say that’s something Microsoft would even allow, it diminishes the ability to compete with the PS5. Why would I get a Series X if there’s a chance that some big game launches will have less features than other current gen platforms?

Microsoft really hamstrung this generation of consoles by releasing the S and demanding it runs feature parity with the X.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

Hey guys, you should get a Series X because BG3 is coming out. Sure it will be missing features that you’ll get on the PS5 like split screen, but you guys understand we need to support the Series S and have parity between our two consoles.

So even though you spent more money on a Series X, that’s capable of running the full game that the PS5 is getting, you should just be happy that you’re getting the game at all. Don’t worry about having paid for a console that’s capable of more.

-Microsoft

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

It’s literally in the title…

Microsoft’s Xbox Series S Parity Demands

And in the article…

While there would be some variance in technical capabilities between consoles, feature parity between the two would remain the same. It would remain the same because Microsoft would demand it remain the same, from both its own studios and third parties.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

Where did Microsoft or Larian say that was an option? Where did Microsoft say that they would be happy to have features cut from the X to keep parity with the S?

I pointed out how poor a business decision this would be if Microsoft would allow it. It ruins their offering for the Series X. How can it compete with the PS5 if they start allowing developers to drop features from Xbox games? The entire point of the article is that Microsoft has boxed themselves into this corner. And your suggestion isn’t a good solution.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

I’m sticking with Voyager for now. Sync is too expensive for a beta app. There’s no post functionality in it yet. I’m also not sure how I feel about paying so much for an app to access Lemmy. I’d rather put some of that money into the instances themselves.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

This post is asking what apps are worth paying for. Someone suggested Sync is worth paying for. I disagree and offered a different opinion. No one said you had to pay for it, just whether it was worth paying for or not.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

My comments are actually after seeing the local pricing. I still think it’s too expensive. Perhaps other locations are more affordable.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

It could be worth cross posting this to !homeautomation

yesterdayshero,

Not the same thing. Games aren’t built for every specific PC configuration. You’ve always adjusted graphics settings on PC depending on what your machine can run.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

I literally posted an article where developers are yet again complaining about having to develop for the Series S and that it isn’t as easy as just “optimisation”. So maybe you can ELI5 how developing for consoles is exactly the same as developing for PC?

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

Of course. Why didn’t those stupid developers think of that.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

But the Series S doesn’t run the PC game. Just like PC’s don’t run the Series S version of the game. I’m confused. If it was so easy, why isn’t every game available on every platform on day one?

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

How does any of that mean that “it’s very much the same as optimising for PC”? Are you saying that developers optimise for every PC configuration possible?

Someone else posted that you can run the game on a PC with weaker specs than a Series S. So clearly it isn’t the same.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

The article I shared was developers complaining about having to optimise for the Series S. But you’re saying that it should just be the same as PC optimising for PC. I completely agree with your answer in that Microsoft stipulates rules for the S. That’s the point. It isn’t the same as PC. Developers have to specifically work on getting games to run on the Series S. I’m so confused as to the point you’re trying to make to me, when in another comment you acknowledge that developers have different standards they’re required to meet for the S. We seem to actually agree.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

If it’s so straight forward, then what are the devs complaining about?

Microsoft requires they meet a specific standard on both the S and X, which is making it harder for them to do. They don’t build to every specific PC variant. But they have to build to both the X and S.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

That article is from 2021 and doesn’t provide links or details to any data. The claim in the article says it’s 50/50. But again, no data is provided.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

“Because Xbox mandates that any games launched on its current-gen systems run smoothly on both Series X and Series S” - from the article

So no, they don’t get to just pick the minimum specs they support like on the PC version. They have to build a game that runs similarly on S and X, or not launch on either. Hence, the S is always going to limit what devs will be able/willing to do on the current gen consoles. More so than if they could just focus on the X and PS5.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

Nice one. What did you end up doing with your grinder? Or are you going with pre-ground for now?

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah cool. Just note that you may need to use the pressurised basket on the pre-ground stuff. Enjoy the journey!

Foundation Shattered

Respectfully, I find the Foundation TV series extremely disheartening. I envy those who can watch Lee Pace’s triumphant acting without being completely off put by the appalling writing choices in the show. The fundamental aspects of the Robot, Empire, and Foundation series books clashe so hard with the message being presented...

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

Good points. And from what I remember of the books, 80% of them was people talking about things that have or will happen, not actually seeing it. I’m not sure a direct dramatasiation of the novel’s would have made great tv.

yesterdayshero,

The problem is that it’s a lot easier to implement agile poorly, than it is to implement it in a way that works.

You’ve essentially described what agile shouldn’t be. The fact it’s called agile, means people assume it just means you can change things whenever you want because that’s being “agile”. That isn’t what agile methodology is meant to be. If that’s what you’re experiencing, then it’s being done wrong. And it’s frustrating because this is extremely common.

Waterfall can be just as bad. I’ve worked on plenty of waterfall projects only to spend months of my time on things that never see the light of day. Things change, and waterfall can rarely deal with change mid-project without starting over. It’s completely dependent on the context of the work.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

That totally sucks. But has nothing to do with agile. That could have happened with waterfall because you would have sat there and developed things in isolation only to find out at the end it wasn’t what was expected.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

That’s the biggest problem with waterfall to be honest. You can sit there and point at requirements, but requirements can be interpreted differently. And that’s a bigger issue with waterfall because you’re handed a list of requirements with little context on what the purpose is of what you’re doing because you weren’t in any of the conversations earlier on in the process.

Agile doesn’t mean you don’t have requirements. What happened really sucks. But you aren’t working in agile. You’re just being screwed.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

I disagree. I’m currently working in agile and it’s the best team I’ve worked in/with. It can easily go wrong, but it can also work really effectively. Implementing agile in an “ok” way, is still better than waterfall in most instances. Of course it depends on the business context.

Take all of OPs complaints for example. Sure, they can be an issue if agile is implemented poorly (or not at all in OPs case), but all of them are inherent issues with waterfall. Developing something only to find out days before launch the business has something else in mind. There would be much less chance of that happening in an agile environment over something like waterfall.

There’s a big problem with people saying they work in agile, when they’re really not. Like in OPs instance. And that leads to the negative sentiment about agile never working. I get it, I’ve been there and had to work in agile teams that weren’t really agile. That doesn’t mean it can never work.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

So if all approaches are poor, then anarchy? I think you need to move on from the communism comparison, and the idea that unless something is perfect it’s not worth doing.

Believe it or not, there are people working in successful agile teams right now. Just because you haven’t, that doesn’t mean it isn’t tenable.

yesterdayshero,
@yesterdayshero@lemmy.world avatar

Agile isn’t meant to replace anything. You need to use the right method for your context. No one said the purpose of agile is to replace all other methods.

Agile doesn’t have to be implemented perfectly to work. You seem to be holding agile to some higher standard than anything else.

You have to get over the communism comparisons. They aren’t relevant.

Just because you haven’t worked in an agile environment you enjoyed, that doesn’t mean it can’t work. It can and does work. Just like any other method. And it can and does fail. Just like any other method.

OP didn’t work in agile. They were told that they were working in agile but it was just an excuse for the business to not have requirements and continually change their mind. Every one of the issues they raised could have happened in any other methodology. It’s poor management.
