The Smashwords end of year sale has begun — for the next two weeks you can stock up on ebooks on sale or free. Go check it out.

All of mine are 50% off including my latest release. They’re fantasy with a side order of romance of various stripes (m/f, m/m, m/nb), a mix of stand-alone and completed series. I’m happy to help you sideload the epub onto your preferred reading device if you’re unsure how to do it.

I’ll paraphrase the most accurate review I’ve ever had — my books are not for everyone, but if they’re for you, you are in for a treat. Maybe give one a go so my son can have a Christmas present*?

(*I AM JUST KIDDING, MY SON WILL STILL GET A CHRISTMAS PRESENT. But I do give most of my writing income to climate justice, international humanitarian aid, fellow small artists, mutual aid, local causes, cancer research, and period poverty assistance, so you could try one of my books for just US$2 with the warm glow of knowing it will be paid forward.)

@SusanHR @bookstodon sneaky, sneaky librarians 😂

wendypalmer, to bookstodon
@wendypalmer@mastodon.au avatar

I live rurally and my library has been part of a consortium of 24 libraries across this part of the state where they all share a catalogue and patrons can borrow from all of them. Recently, courier costs have become too much and they’ve cut into blocks of 5 or so libraries for delivery (I honestly just thought they’d hired someone whose job it was to continuously circuit through the 24 libraries, collecting and returning books).

The other cost-cutting measure is that they no longer return books to the originating library. So I’m seeing “New to this library” bookmarks on quite a few books now.

One of the librarians casually told me that patrons still have membership in the full 24-library network. So that if I were to, say, visit one of the big towns now outside our small delivery block, I could, maybe, borrow books directly from there — and I could, you know, conveniently return it via my own library.

And then my library gets to keep it.

They’re very quietly deploying their readers to raid the bigger libraries 😂

Nice to hear Tamsyn Muir, NZ author of the Locked Tomb series, on This American Life today, giving an interesting perspective on fan-fiction.

If an subscription service sounds like it might be for you, please consider supporting one that isn't owned by , that exploits its dominant position to force authors into exclusivity deals preventing their work from being available elsewhere. Kobo plus is doing audible books now in their subscriptions , though I don’t know their range.

And Scribd has a decent catalogue - just have to bear in mind that they do limit how many you can listen to each month (I wish they’d be more upfront about this aspect, instead of claiming to be unlimited…they’re unlimited listening but not unlimited access)

Book folks, what’s your most anticipated fall read?

There’s so much that’s either freshly out or coming soon that I’m excited for, I don’t know how I’m gonna keep up! I already hit the Lauren Groff and Zadie Smith, and now I’m starting on Penance by Eliza Clark, which is intense right out of the gate…

@lunalein @bookstodon Connie Willis has a new one out (The Road to Roswell), very much looking forward to that.

And the Jinn-Bot of Shantiport by Samit Basu, in just a few days now.

Good to see previous authors now appearing on (which lets them list everywhere else as well) instead. The one author I was resigned to having to subscribe one more time to KU for is now on KP, I’m very pleased. I hope it works out better for the authors too.

Hey , have you come across any books with misleading and / or bad blurbs? Please share!
I just finished Wole Soyinka's "Chronicles from the Land of the Happiest Peopleon Earth" and.. that book has a misleading blurb with a big spoiler. Wish I hadn't read the blurb. (Good book, though. More on that later.)

@ferngirl @writingcommunity @bookstodon way back in the 90s - a historical romance whose blurb made it sound like the main character was going to be a Chinese servant girl - no, the MC was the usual heroine of the time, and the poor servant girl didn’t even get enough of a subplot to justify being on the blurb.

That blurb has stayed with me because it was so egregiously bad, and also I paid good money for an interesting MC which I did not get.

Choosing was much easier than trying pick favourites, because most of it was just looking at the books on my shelf that have survived multiple culls because of the impact they had me when I first read them, and the rest was looking at the books I consistently turn to for comfort re-reads. Though I could have used a couple more slots :)

Watership Down. Richard Adams
Howl’s Moving Castle. Diana Wynne Jones
Guards, Guards. Terry Pratchett
Bridge of Birds. Barry Hughart
Gaudy Night. Dorothy L Sayers
Doomsday Book. Connie Willis
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. Susanna Clarke
The Goneaway World. Nick Harkaway
The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay. Michael Chabon
The Kingdoms. Natasha Pulley
Boy Swallows Universe. Trent Dalton
Sword Dance. AJ Demas
Slippery Creatures. KJ Charles

It’s been awhile since I’ve read a good F/F book. I read any romance trope, but prefer to stay away from horror. Any recommendations? The big Amazonian AI has stopped suggesting to me for some reason, although I still get recs for menage and MM. Help!!! @romancelandia

@ElleSabine @romancelandia I like Freya Marske’s series - the second book is lovely f/f and the whole trilogy (fantasy, last book in its way) is quite engaging.

Also Courtney Milan’s Mrs Martin’s Incomparable Adventure (more traditional romance but with older protagonists)

Day 27 of and today's post is dedicated to @lenoreo as she mentioned MMCs in a recent reply. My fave Cinnamon Roll Hero is probably Martin in Olivia Dade's "Teach Me": he's been hurt in a previous relationship; he's a doting dad; he is sweet and gentle with the FMC Rose, until he becomes a dirty talking sexy lover (after seeking her consent for talking dirty, of course).
Please share your cinnamon roll recs!
