traveler01,

Good day to my fellow Americans, may you enjoy your afternoon.

Going to sleep now 😴

traveler01,

I don’t have them since I’m still trying to figure out which app I’m going to use to access Lemmy

Edit: Good morning!

traveler01,

I’m confused, didn’t Americans need a VISA to visit European countries? They just jump into a plain and fly here with their passport and no questions asked?

If it’s like this I had no idea…

traveler01,

That’s quite bullshit honestly. As far as I know if I wanted to go to US I’d need a VISA.

traveler01,

Ah so it’s the same already as here. I know I’d have to pay to fill a form online and pay a sum to go to the US. The title is a bit misleading.

traveler01,

Even though people on Lemmy hate Elon Musk and what he’s doing to Twitter (there’s a lot of hate against him here, since most people are left leaning), he got the message loud and clear: People are tired of ads and of platforms that eat through our personal data like Google and Meta.

All his actions with Twitter is to steer Twitter away from the advertising system. My guess is, he wants advertising to be a non-essencial source of revenue, hence he switching the name of the platform to X.

My guess is that he’s planning to make a super-app with multiple services, so there will be:

  • X Twitter
  • X Pay
  • X Banking … etc,

These other services will provide the other revenue the platform needs.

Why did I brought this up? It’s because Google and Meta failed to see the message and they’re going on a downward spiral. Google has been trying to charge more and more on subscriptions on YouTube for example, but that’s not nearly enough to cover the percentage of the advertising revenue. And now instead of trying to find new solutions they’re doubling down on advertising revenue strategy by making ad blocking unusable in the most used browser engine.

traveler01,

But of course capitalism breed oligarchs and oligarchy and thus markets were deformed to benefit the oligarchs (and socialise risks while privatising profits).

In my opinion when you start having oligarchs and this amount of wealth inequality, it’s only a symptom that the state is failing to do what was created to do, at-least in theory.

The state should be only a regulator, more like a referee in the market. Currently everywhere in western democracies the state is failing to do it. We have the lower income people getting taxed to hell, either directly or by proxy while the uber-rich are influencing the state regulation directly.

traveler01,

Do you have any example of a country with socialism that successfully made it?

traveler01,

There’s tons of data showing that capitalism actually makes the average joe a lot richer.

traveler01,

They refer to Venezuela which is a socialist country, and of course not the greenest country in the world.

traveler01,

The US is a bad example, and still is a greater example than the communist/socialist countries provided.

These nordic countries are pretty good example of how you can have capitalism with a great welfare state, without going socialist/communist. My guess is their main difference is that they don’t allow the richer companies to lobby on politicians, or at-least not as much as the US does.

traveler01,

Nordic countries are not socialist.

traveler01,

Having social welfare doesn’t make a country socialist.

traveler01,

French economy is not a good example, as far as I know it’s stagnated.

traveler01,

Jeez a communist disliking such an article, what a surprise.

traveler01,

Is the US the only example of a capitalist country you know about?

traveler01,

When you’re so poor that you don’t know what you’re going to eat tomorrow, or if the money of your wage may run out until the end of the month, will you care much about that?

traveler01,

I understand your point, that’s why I consider that the state should be an independent regulator. What’s happening right now is that due to corruption the state is failing to do it so.

traveler01,

Capitalism with strong regulation is so good that the Soviet Union used it; China uses it

Capitalism with strong regulation… the best example would be the nordic countries you believe are socialist.

traveler01,

The data shows it’s stagnated. It’s a common symptom between western european economies. The more they lean left, the worse their economy gets:

Their GDP

traveler01,

They are social democracies. Even Wikipedia makes it clear.

Dunno where people got the idea these countries are socialist.

traveler01,

Socialism is what social democracies do.

You’re now following in the most common argument fallacy between socialists/communists, called No true Scotsman.

traveler01,

Yes another “No true Scotsman” argument. Amazing!

traveler01,

I never did say poverty wasn’t not existent in capitalist systems. I’ve said though that capitalism helped decrease poverty races over the last century.

When the Berlin Wall was up, to which side people wanted to run?

traveler01,

Could it be because their economy is in crumbles?

It’s easy to be green if you don’t consume too much energy.

traveler01,

Every new flagship phone is water resistant man.

traveler01,

He’s talking about only changing the logo and people are all talking about it. It’s free marketing like he does with Tesla.

traveler01,

A good engagement metric is a good thing to show to big advertisers no? At the end of the day these companies couldn’t care less with woke/pc culture, they just want to sell.

traveler01,

The extremes are similars in various ways.

traveler01,

And you got 8 downvotes only for saying you’re right leaning…

traveler01,

Pretty much sums up the nowadays discussions. If you’re a commie/socialist you’re good, if you even dare to defend the free market you’re a shit asshole.

Everyone who defends a free market will like Lemmy since it’s pretty much adding a competitor (or a ton of them if you count it as instances) to the market. If the instance owner wants profit or not I don’t know, but these type of servers does not run themselves for free.

traveler01,

That’s honestly the state of the world. Left: good, right wing is somehow fascist. Will sound like some QANON shit but this is probably what Putin and others want, to divide and conquer. While we’re arguing about shit that in the end doesn’t really matter, The US dollar is going downhill together with western democracies.

traveler01,

Honestly there’s the political compass (example here) that can sum up better political views for what matters. Though the left and right specter should be considered more regarding the economy, you have communists and nazis which in the freedoms are pretty much in the same place, while economy-wise they’re different.

traveler01,

I mean that’s is just to show how much of a reform the American system actually needs. Lobbying should be forbidden for instance.

traveler01,

Who cares about Reddit. We have Lemmy now.

traveler01,

Burnout is quite hard to detect, and that’s why it’s very dangerous.

traveler01,

That map is for air temperature right? Since it shows way higher temperatures for Portugal than the ones actually given by the weather stations. For example it’s showing 30+ for zones that didn’t hit even close to that, worse even were cloudy today.

Edit: Also odd that the iOS app for those locations don’t throw these maximums.

Where did that weather data come from? (scratch this)

Edit2: saw that it’s based on the GFS model. I’ve seen some criticisms regarding using that for other than US since that model accuracy is quite low.

traveler01,

It’s cold af there right now according to that model

traveler01,

Don’t have any, and curious to know why this map was based on GFS.

You can however check the ipma (Portuguese weather institute) to know the actual temperatures and the actual predictions based on models employed here.

Also important to know Italy and Greece are suffering from abnormal temperatures while Portugal is not due to the Azores anti cyclone.

Still, according to the my iOS app I those two cities don’t have the (maximum) temperatures shown in that map.

traveler01,

A cat that hates boxes and confined spaces it’s a first. They usually love both these things…

traveler01,

You adopted her already a bit old in her life right?

traveler01,

Most likely something happened to her that caused some kind of fear.

My younger one also had some rough “childhood”. History is, he got into my car, the bottom of it inside the protective plastics. I was at work and couldn’t for the hell of it remove the cat. So I had to drive home, where with the help of my brother I lifted the car and had to remove those plastics to be able to rescue him. (I drove 40km with him scared always meowing, rough ride).

Took him right away to a vet to see if there was something he needed care with, had just a burn in his tail which I got medicine for.

Nowadays he’s scared very easily and hate visits. Though he’s the sweetest cat, even allows me to pet his belly. But that’s why I guessed that he already had some history.

traveler01,

Almost everyday Ukrainian child’s get either killed or hurt in random attacks to civilian targets. This bridge is a military target, and Russians should already be aware of it.

traveler01,

I think these limits were increased to a point where they are not really bad or they were removed. The point of them was to prevent scraping to train AIs

traveler01,

You’re painting him like he’s a super villain, that’s pure hate for him. Why?
