i'm certainly not asking for comments for the sake of comments, i am asking for less lurking and more generating. people usually have something to say, add, or discuss, it's effort-level is subjective. i just want those people to feel encouraged to speak out, its safer to do so here than it was on reddit, and it's also helpful
I would like to suggest that developers consider as much flexibility when trying to interact with links/handles from off-instance and off-kbin (e.g. lemmy) as possible. I would like for it to work on lemmy in a similar fashion....
If you recall reddits growth many of their communities evolved as offshoots of a single generic community. This made it easier for people to see discussions they normally would not get involved in, and once the posts in a similar category reached critical mass it moved to a sub Reddit....
What beehaw has done with limiting the creation of communities has worked well, since the ones they created have been pretty active.
Not all instances need to be that strict, but might be good to have a place to propose a community, why they’d be a good mod, and type of initial content they plan to post themselves before it grows would help until the user base is bigger to be able to sustain random free for all creation of communities. Some places just exist with nothing posted at all, so you’re not sure if even the person who created abandoned it from the get go.
I made a magazine on kbin as an alternative to a relatively niche subreddit I really appreciated. And in the month since the migration, it’s only grown more apparent that I was a bit over enthusiastic about the scope of that migration. Only 2, maybe 3, others have contributed to the magazine, and it’s usually a question I have no definitive answer for. Oddly enough, there are over 40 silent subscribers, so I’m probably doing something of interest to some people out there.
For better or worse, Kbin still doesn’t have the means to let you remove magazines you’ve created. So rather than deleting or abandoning it, I’ve kind of opted to take responsibility over it and treat it as more of a personal hobby and public repository for myself. Every once in a while I’ll post a tutorial for something I’ve done, or write out some thoughts of my own without any expectation of engagement. When the ability to delete magazines comes through, I might consider migrating my more useful contributions to one of the more centralized magazines at that point and then removing my own.

Fair enough. It's just unfortunate because the content Pips is posting is good content, it's just that posting it absolutely everywhere all at once undermines the point of being federated with other tech communities. By making it spammy, it discourages people from wanting to follow more than one tech group at a time, which isn't fair to those tech groups. If Pips just stuck to posting in the tech group they like, that could be a good incentive for more federated users to just follow that specific group.
Yes... I honestly wish using and subscribing to tags was a more of a thing, since those are cross-instance, and multiple communities with overlapping topics could just make use of overlapping tags. And they also have the advantage that you can add multiple tags to the same post, no need to repeat the post.
Right now you can visit https://kbin.social/tag/technology/threads and see all threads tagged as technology, cross instance and cross magazine, but you cant subscribe to that (but it should be possible to implement at some point though, Mastodon does it).

As I’ve been lurking around the fediverse, running instances seems to be universally a hobby project, and it’s a little concerning. It kind of gives the impression of all being idealistic young kids embarrassed to ascribe value to their own time. I mean, you can do a lot with volunteer labor, especially if it’s a good ecosystem with appropriate recognition and gratitude, but the people are absolutely the most valuable parts of kbin.social, lemmy.world, etc, and they do have to eat, pay rent, go on vacation. It’s tough to respond to a 3am message about your instance being hacked if you have a job to be at four hours later, and leads to a whole different kind of burnout.
It’s early days yet, but I hope the bigger instance teams get some input from people who’ve managed growth spurts in non-profits, and especially the transition to their first paid staff members (even when that staff member is the owner).
Yeah, absolutely. Choosing an instance is a mature decision that I hope many people will make. It would mean that the /kbin ecosystem is strong enough to handle it. However, for now, I would suggest sticking to larger instances that have been around for a while or those where the administrators are active on Matrix - like @melroy - they know /kbin best. In those cases, everyone can also get quick help from me by reaching out privately for a sufficient period of time ;)

yeah I think it would be good to do more. hashtags are clunky and an eyesore, and I would love to see better support of them that mitigates this. But currently they are the main way to signal discoverability on the fediverse. And posts on kbin are (usually) made with the intention that the public can interact with them.
One thing I would like to see is an extra field when you submit your post where you can add in some hashtags. These can be rendered as Tags in activitypub, which do exactly the same thing as hashtags, except that they are not visible in the main body of the text. The ActivityPub wordpress plugin also does this. I add tags to my posts on wordpress, and when you search for that hashtag, my wordpress blog post shows up, even though you'll not find the hashtag anywhere in the body of the text.

With additional tools for moderators, a system for taking over abandoned magazines will be created. I want to automate this, but it will take some time. I am in the process of finalizing the last formalities. I will soon post a status update.
