@bookstodon As we approach the end of 2023, I would love to know about the very best books you read this year. (They don't have to have been published in 2023 for your "best of" list.)

@penpencilbrush@mstdn.social avatar

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon A pretty good year, top 11 in no particular order:

Claire Keegan's Small Things Like These
Sandra Cisneros' The House on Mango Street
Philip Pullman's Once Upon a Time in the North
Percival Everett's Dr. No
Debbie Tung's Quiet Girl in a Noisy World
Bart van Es' The Cut Out Girl
Louise Penny's A World of Curiosities
Martha Gellhorn's Travels with Myself and Another
Madeline Miller's Galatea
Damon Galgut's The Promise
James McBride's The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store

@kimlockhartga @bookstodon Any Percival Everett is going to be a good time! Serious and hilarious at the same time. Just deadly. 😆

Not caught up yet, but you can see the ghosts a lot more clearly with the white! Definately feel like it was worth ripping back to redo these.

@knitting

"Old" version of the Haunted House cowl with the original grey yarn used for the ghosts. They are harder to see in the pattern because the yarns don't have enough contrast.

@terri @knitting Good decision! Hard to see the grey ghosts without seriously looking for them. The white ghosts pop out.

@bookstodon folks, do you listen to audiobooks? If so:

  • Do you have favorite narrators? Or the opposite? Ever started or quit listening to something because of the voice?
  • if you’re talking about a book, do you say you’ve read it?

penpencilbrush,
@penpencilbrush@mstdn.social avatar

@lunalein @bookstodon Will definitely quit listening to even a favourite book if the narrator doesn't work for me. There's a few mystery/detective series that I love, but cannot listen to because of the narrator.
Will listen to almost anything with a good narrator, those voices! - Anton Lesser, Martin Shaw, Joanna Lumley...
Also prefer memoirs/autobiographies read by the authors themselves - Michelle Obama, Judi Dench,... "Read by the author"

@bookstodon I am trying to read around the world.

Can anyone recommend any good books in English from:

● Chad
● San Marino
● Eswatini
● Vanuatu
● Sao Tome and Principe
● Kiribati
● Montenegro

I'm quite eclectic in taste, so genre is not too important, but I would prefer indigenous, female, or LGBTQ+ writers if possible. Just to make it harder, I'm trying to do this using the council library, but I have had to download or buy second-hand a fair few. #Books #Reading #ReadAroundTheWorldChallenge

@Neferure @bookstodon Have you checked out Scallydandling about the books on utube? She does reading around the world videos.

So, I finished the 2nd sleeve of the small cardigan for my 3-yo daughter. Hurray!

Only an i-cord edge of the fronts and neckline left to do.... only... I finished all the yarn.

So I'm thinking about going all mad and doing the i-cord edge in a totally different colour. Maybe even black? mastodonians... what do you think?? I do have a second skein of the same yarn, but... what to do!!

@knitting
Well under way for the !!!

@nobyeni @knitting Another colour i-cord would be great! I'd go for neon orange i-cord, but that's just me being me.

Today seems to be a finishing day. Pair of socks now knitted, just need to graft the toes together. Pretty much identical as well. Basic sock pattern. @knitting

@RandomYarning @knitting Well done, pretty yarn as well!
