An independent mechanic would probably do it. The dealer probably wouldn’t.
Disabling the modem would make any features that rely on Internet stop working. Could mess up the infotainment system. If the wire that powers the modem also powers the radio then you could lose that too. It will take trial and error to find the right wire and it’s different for every car.
That’s why I suggest using a switch instead of cutting it out completely, so if it breaks something you can turn it back on. This also helps to retain the value of the car since the next owner probably wants the modem on.
Google's DeepMind unit is unveiling today a new method it says can invisibly and permanently label images that have been generated by artificial intelligence.
This is Google were talking about. We’re probably going to find out that you can remove the mark by resizing or reducing the color depth or something stupid like that. Remember how YouTube added ContentID and it would flag innocent users while giving actual pirates a pass? As said in a related article:
“There are few or no watermarks that have proven robust over time,” said Ben Zhao, professor at the University of Chicago studying AI authentication. “An attacker seeking to promote deepfake imagery as real, or discredit a real photo as fake, will have a lot to gain, and will not stop at cropping, or lossy compression or changing colors.”
The problem with most smartphone image editors is that they are meant for quick edits to photos. Usually they are limited to cropping, adding filters and drawing. I’m looking for something a little more capable, something more akin to a traditional desktop editor like GIMP. Open source is a plus.
Photos are pretty much indistinguishable from the Google app. However it does has a fewer number of features, and I have found that videos on the Google app are less choppy.
For those of you who don’t clean their buds very often, a new version of the Pixel Buds app will start showing you a notification telling you it’s cleaning time every 120 hours of wearing them.
At least two brands have said they will suspend advertising on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, after their ads and those of other companies were run on an account promoting fascism. It’s my goddamn motherfucking mobile data and MY PHONE. I should be able to use it however I want. My wifi went down because the greedy, cunt-faced shitbags at Comcast stole taxpayer subsidies to enrich themselves instead of actually providing the service we’re paying for. I tried to switch to a mobile hotspot and my phone...
There are options now that allow you to remove phone bloat/ads/spyware without rooting and without breaking the security model of the device. GrapheneOS and CalyxOS have made rooting obsolete IMO.
You just need an OEM unlocked Pixel and a web browser that supports webUSB. You literally just click the buttons on the installation web page and it does everything for you in your web browser.
This is the first and second step in the EEE cycle. They are embracing Mastodon by allowing instances to connect to theirs, and they are extending it by providing a verification service for all Mastodon users - a service which is conveniently dependent on Meta as a centralized authority. Eventually every celebrity will rely on Meta to get verified and Meta will use this to extinguish independent Mastodon instances.
I do understand why so many people, especially creative folks, are worried about AI and how it’s used. The future is quite unknown, and things are changing very rapidly, at a pace that can feel out…
Magic Earth is an alternative to Waze and Google Maps with crowdsourced traffic and road hazard information
As part of a #BigTechDiet, I've been hoping to find an alternative to #Waze and #Google Maps - a navigation app that can tell me about slowdowns, hazards, and speed traps based on reports from other users. Today, I learned about Magic Earth.
It's proprietary, but not from FAANG or a company subject to the government of China, Russia, or Five Eyes countries. It collects minimal user data and has a good privacy policy. There are versions for both Android and iOS, and the Android version works without Google services.
I’m against ungoogled-chromium. I used it for a while and it feels like someone took a sledgehammer and smashed up all the Google parts without cleaning up afterwards. I stopped using it mainly because of security concerns.
I don’t use Firefox because of its poor security compared to chromium. I’d love it if a sane, well-polished, open source chromium based browser came along and replaces Brave.
The Indian rice export ban, the war in Ukraine and El Niño are combining to create a "doom loop" for the world's poorest people, as staple food prices soar.
Most rice in the world is poisoned by pollutants anyway. Since rice grows in water it collects arsenic from pesticides and when you eat it regularly it puts you at risk for a wide variety of arsenic related diseases. Ironically, the rice with the least amount of nutrients (white rice) also has the lowest arsenic levels.
Arsenic was used as a pesticide in many parts of the world throughout the 20th century. Even if it wasn’t used on rice it ended up in the water where the rice grew.

It’s interesting how it’s just assumed that everyone is browsing on mobile. I remember ten years ago on Reddit people making fun of mobile users and extolling the virtues of the desktop.
