mojo,

+1 for Bitwarden

mojo,

Do you not need to sign in to your accounts from different devices? Not to mention autofill support is a big deal, hence why browser addons are so important. The other password managers are plenty secure, especially with 2fa and webauth which that app certainly is not going to have.

What's the point of buying new phones every years?

Other than your carrier give it for free or cheap, I don’t really see the reason why should you buy new phone. I’ve been using Redmi Note 9 for past 3 years and recently got my had on Poco F5. I don’t see the point of my ‘upgrade’. I sold it and come back to my Note 9. Gaming? Most of them are p2w or microtransaction...

mojo,

This is why I exclusively stick to Pixels. Honestly don’t really care about the hardware, it’s okay. But it’s the only phone that lets you flash it and reflash it with a custom key so you can have verified boot on a custom OS.

Android is a tricky situation, there’s very few phones that actually allow you to unlock the bootloader, and only Pixels can do it securely. Samsungs are basically a no go unless it’s an older phone that has gotten cracked open. Like Samsung S5 old.

So ironically Google phones are by far the best to degoogle your phone lol, and they actually go above and beyond to let you do so. Even the new Pixel fold and tablets support this. I personally recommend GrapeheneOS or CalyxOS for these devices, both are really good.

I choose my custom OS first and then pick the actual physical phone second. For me, I value software over hardware, but obviously that’s important too.

mojo,

Don’t think so, also not sure how Mastodon feeds work with Lemmy as they aren’t really upvoted/downvoted on. Though the opposite works where you can follow communities/accounts from Mastodon.

mojo,

Pretty different experience, but if you prefer it that way you can. You can actually follow specific communities from Mastodon, but it’s not nearly as good of an experience. I just install both apps and have separate accounts for both.

mojo,

wtf is the context here and who is this person

mojo,

Vista and XP were pretty baller. Really like the glassy look that Vista had, and it had video wallpapers built in. They were ahead of the game with ricing, and the transparency/glass is just now coming back!

mojo,

No, it was a small dev team and it died out. Stick to distros that are established and have been around for awhile. You’ll see a lot of small hobby distros that’ll disappear over night. For an easy beginner rolling release distro, I’d suggest openSUSE rolling. They are an established company and aren’t going anywhere. Their releases are very stable and have a very easy to use GUI installer and updater in the distro. It’s general use as well, not a lot extra besides the desktop environment, tools, browser, etc. Seems exactly what you’re looking for and is all out of the box.

mojo,

I’ve used Tutanota as email + calendar for years. Also way cheaper then protonmail

mojo,

Yeah the $10/mo plan for Pritin is actually super good, and they have a whole suite of tools that covers basically all you could need. Though I’ve been liking Tutanota, and they just announced an e2e cloud drive so I’m patiently waiting for that. I feel like if I wanted to get proton drive, I’d have to go into their whole ecosystem and don’t really want to migrate my setup and like the Tutanota company.

mojo,

Same tho, except I never was taken to a psychologist:(

When I finally went to a psychotherapist as an adult, they knew like as soon as I walked in from my bouncing, speech, and body language.

I started pirating movies again after a decade

I was a happy Netflix user until 2018, before that I haven’t really pirated any movies (with very rare exceptions) for almost a decade but I recently started again. I’m was doing my monthly budgeting and realized I was paying for too many subscription services. Netflix, Amazon Prime, Shudder, Disney+, Hulu and Crunchyroll....

mojo,

Personally I find the recommendations really bad lol, I never stray outside of my library or playlists. I find music looking at artists I like then seeing other songs they wrote, or search what I hear playing in the world around me, or what I’m watching.

mojo,

The FOSS ones suck in comparison honestly. There’s really just osmAnd that has a really ancient UI. As for other OSM(OpenStreetMaps), I find MAPS.ME to be the best, but it’s closed source with some crypto scam crap built in that you can’t disable.

I don’t really like OSM based maps because they miss tons of places where I’m at, when I specifically need building numbers and locations. Also the search on both apps is god awful and straight broken.

Google Maps is definitely miles ahead of the competition here. The other features like seeing how busy businesses are, reviews/images, menu and phone number/website. These are also icing on top of the cake that make it essential to have which none of the competition have, let alone any FOSS ones.

mojo,

Reminder that Microsoft is trying to shift Windows to be entirely cloud based, so this can easily happen overnight without your consent. You don’t own your OS. Linux is the only way, unless you’re one of those strange BSD folks.

mojo,

oh no the 4chan meme arrow speak

mojo,

Just Spotify, they haven’t ruined their service yet. I will never be one of those boomers who manually download all their mp3s and think normal people want to transfer files around between devices.

mojo,

This isn’t mildly infuriating, Musk is being the biggest fedi advocate out there! He’s selflessly nuking his own site so he can drive traffic to decentralized alternatives. This is a good thing lol, and should be an important lesson on link rot, and that social media should never be the primary method of communication.

mojo,

I mean I see why Reddit and Twitter are doing it. We’re in a really weird transitional period of the internet right now, for better or for worse. They’re doing it to prevent scraping, because why would you read all these garbage tweets to get to the information you need when an ChatGPT can spit out the exact information without fluff? It’s taking their content without any funding back to them, effectively stealing their revenue.

So what are these companies to do? Honestly I hope this is birth to a new form of social media, and this benefits the fedi greatly. It will be unsustainable to run large social media companies like theirs who profit off of user data and content. Whereas tons of fedi servers ran by hobbiest, effectively ran out of pocket or by donations, is much more sustainable. They’re doing it for community and more pure content that everyone wants without corporate fluff. If ChatGPT scrapes the fedi community, that’s okay because the fedi isn’t designed to make money so nothing is lost.
