mojo,

Trans servers usually are extremely trigger happy with anything they slightly disagree with, so this is very on brand

mojo,

Wow, we were allowed a few pixels for a few minutes, granted by our corporate overlords whom valiantly watch over every pixel to ensure they get the maximum IPO value! Just kidding, the bots decided to make it another flag or osu image or some stupid shit.

mojo,

it’s better to spend your time just not participating

mojo,

That’s awesome! I still don’t need to know anything about you to still say it’s not worth your time going on Reddit lol.

mojo,

Yes because I’m on Lemmy and not Reddit, and this is literally half a second of typing

mojo,

Why tf are you still there lol. Were all the other terrible changes not enough?

mojo,

RIP his SEO. I know it’s part of his goal for an “everything” app. But, this name is just terrible and is going to be a nightmare to look up. Not to mention how much history will refer to Twitter and not a single letter.

mojo,

Trans are bullied and socially ostrichized irl, so they tend to be terminally online. A lot of trans are also coders. They manage to find themselves in to pretty much every obscure techy social space online, they don’t got anything else going on irl.

mojo,

that’d be pretty wicked if they could turn into ostriches too

In light of articles all over Lemmy about Google pushing ManifestV3 onto Chrome and the majority of web users, isn't that an antitrust violation? (www.ftc.gov)

So as I understand it, Google’s using it’s monopoly market position to force web “standards” unilaterally (without an independent/conglomerate web specification standards where Google is only one of many voices) that will disadvantage its competitors and force people to leave its competitors....

mojo,

You can’t have antitrust and capitalism, they are fundamentally opposites. And only one has actual enforceable power.

mojo,

Nope, other then try a different Camera app. That’s why I keep two installed and have to manually go into gallery. Yes, it’s extremely annoying and against Google’s own design decisions.

People sticking with audio jack phones, why is USB-C earphones not a solution?

Don’t get me wrong. Apple removing audio jack was the biggest facepalm in smartphone history. And you can thank it for not being able to make an upgrade without sacrificing audio jack (and SD card too :/). But USB-C is getting standardized everywhere now (laptops, smartphones, etc.). What makes USB-C earphones not worth the...

mojo,

There are way more aux jack headphones out there, and you don’t want your very high quality headphones suddenly be forced to be considered obsolete just because tech companies feel like selling a different product.

Most Americans favor restrictions on false information, violent content online (www.pewresearch.org)

65% of Americans support tech companies moderating false information online and 55% support the U.S. government taking these steps. These shares have increased since 2018. Americans are even more supportive of tech companies (71%) and the U.S. government (60%) restricting extremely violent content online.

mojo,

Big tech should be doing so, but they already get pressure from advertisers to moderate that away. For the smaller ones like the insane right winger sites, let them spew nonsense, since it sets a dangerous precedent for everyone else if they’re not allowed to shit out misinformation and bigotry.

That’s where the internet should very much be made free. There’s too many cases of legitimate websites that can be shut down through these means. We need to correct misinformation with correct information.

mojo,

There’s a lot more reasons that count for that. That became a very big social and political issue, which is a separate issue. I ask you then, how would we enforce this if non megacorps were forced to comply? Should decentralized media like Lemmy be forced to comply as well? Would US be forced to defederate with other country instances in the situation they may not govern their speech? Would encrypted communication that cannot be governed get banned so we can carefully make sure misinformation doesn’t get spread? As soon as you think of the how would this be enforced, you quickly realize how terrible of an idea this is.

Of course it’s easy to say misinformation bad, nobody is disagreeing with you. But actually going into actual practical solutions that maintain freedom and privacy is the hard part.

mojo,

I’m in the US and we use SMS instead of any specific app. It’s a pretty shitty protocol, but it’s at least not tied to any company.

Maybe in 2040 we’ll get an upgraded protocol when companies megacorps actually decide to try and bridge protocols.

mojo,

The iphone part is not even close to being somewhat true. There are more Android users the iPhone users.

mojo,

That’s exactly what I was getting at

mojo,

Though I wouldn’t say Androids get it. More like Google Messages and a very few select apps get RCS. It’s a standard protocol in theory. In practice, not so much. I think there’s like 3 total apps. You’ll probably never see a FOSS RCS app, or one that isn’t tied to a big corp. Server implentations of RCS also aren’t standard, but most use Google Jibe.

mojo,

Like power craving losers won’t jump at the opportunity to power trip

mojo,

It’s a more techy community since that tends to be early adopters. They tend to lean pretty heavy left and are more informed. You still have the techys with anime profile pics and are 4chan/incel that are right wing though. They get defederated really quick though.

mojo,

People need to realize that in a world wide perspective, liberals are considered right wing for being capitalist. They’re only left wing in the fucked up US political landscape that is so far skewed right.

What's your opinion on Opera browser? (kbin.social)

I've been using Opera for a few years now and I've been enjoying its features, UI and everything. However, I (surprisingly to me) haven't noticed many people mentioning it. Also, when I was on Reddit and mentioned that I use it I got downvoted which left me somewhat confused haha....

mojo,

Yeah cuz I tend to run out of content quicker, but it gets refilled quite a bit throughout the day

mojo,

you can move it to your keystore in /etc/pki

Is there anything actually useful or novel about "AI"?

Feel like we’ve got a lot of tech savvy people here seems like a good place to ask. Basically as a dumb guy that reads the news it seems like everyone that lost their mind (and savings) on crypto just pivoted to AI. In addition to that you’ve got all these people invested in AI companies running around with flashlights under...

mojo,

Crypto and AI can’t be compared at all. One is an extremely useful and revolutionary tool. The other is just pump & dump ponzi schemes for libertarians.

Should we post on our local instances' communities to avoid making the Fediverse centralized? (kbin.social)

I realized that there are alot of inactive communities across the Lemmy and kbin instances. The beauty of decentralization is that we don't rely on a central instance, if a fediverse instance becomes the central one that hosts the majority of posts, then if that instance goes down, we lose alot. I also suggest posting to small...

mojo,

Instead of a bunch of fractured communities, I’d like to focus on one main of the a topic. If that means centralizing on one of the main couple of ones, I think that’s better for the sake of content instead of decentralization. It would grow the fedi at a faster rate this way. The centralization problem would hopefully be solved later if Lemmy were to add a redirect feature, similar to how Masotodon account transfers work by old accounts acting like transfers. That way once a larger community of centralized and grown, it’ll be able to move to another instance for the sake of decentralization.

mojo,

Are you using a Synology NAS?

mojo,

This is an awesome thing, it encourages people up get off their site

mojo,

Yes and it’ll likely be expensive, but it can very much save lives. When you’re very remote and need to tell someone your location, or you need help, that’s where it really shines. From what I hear too, it’s not exactly fast either so probably not for real time texting or chatting willy nilly.

mojo,

That is a dangerous host name, none of those things are free for life at all

mojo,

Someone who drives tanks to work

mojo,

Wow Reddit can openly and unapologetically shit on their community and they continue to support the site. All of the “fuck spez” content is gone, and they’re doing exactly what Reddit wanted in the first place, keeping it corporate and advertiser friendly. What a sad community that can’t even defend themselves, this is why the state of things are getting so much worse.

mojo,

Anyone else have the top status bar be awkwardly dark gray while in light mode? I’ve had that since Jerboa has existed, but wonder why no one else has mentioned it.

mojo,

I don’t really see the point of adding it to Steam in the first place anyways

mojo,

Is spez wrong? The community is openly letting themselves get cucked. Look at how r/place has already given up on revolting and is instead working together to boost Reddit’s IPO value. The closed subreddit protests gave up. Nobody is caring about moderators being replaced. People are still going about the site like normal. So is spez really wrong that this was going to pass because the users clearly don’t care if they’re getting fucked, just like how people somehow still hang on to Twitter.

mojo,

Well the good news is if you actually go to the Discords who attempted to move over from subreddits, they’re all unnavigable messes with zero way to actually find new information or posts, so the whole thing has been a failure. Why people thought a cringy closed source gamer chat platform was a good replacement is beyond me. They were wrong and the results show this. Discord is not for that use case and is not remotely a Reddit replacement.

mojo,

did u just compare reddit to Nazi Germany lol. I see the /s but that doesn’t even make sense here

mojo,

It still needs to be constantly said since some haven’t gotten the message, stop going on Reddit. Let it go brother, you’re in a better place.

mojo,

That was another person who wrote that comment, and nobody is saying you aren’t allowed to do anything. Idk what comment you read, or if you know what irony means.

[Rant] I hate the modern internet

I am fucking scared of the mass surveilence nightmare direction that the internet and the world as a whole is going towards… C2PA, france hacking itself into citizen phones, the UK anti encryption law, EU’s chat control, etc. Im also sick of and hate the “you will own nothing and be happy” mentality that corpos try to...

mojo,

There’s actually a lot to look forward to. In fact you’re talking on one of those reasons right now.

e2ee is only a recent thing which is significantly more private. You can have an entirely private FOSS operating system that has parity with Windows for free.

The privacy and FOSS ecosystems are thriving more then ever. There are more VPN providers then ever before, and Tor gets better and better.

We have decentralized social media like the fedi which gives complete freedom against corporate control.

We have all sorts of amazing FOSS tools out there. We even have an AI that can be run completely locally and with custom unfiltered models that is very close to competitive with ChatGPT, and also free.

None of these things even existed like 10 years ago, or were in their infancy. They’re all competitive to modern corporate alternatives. Privacy alternatives are by far in the best state they’ve ever been, and they’ll just continue to improve as the community grows larger.

We can own all these tools and self host. In fact we’ve never been able to “own” anywhere near as much as we can today.

mojo,

Why do people want to be doomers over literally nothing. There’s so much good that you’re just ignoring.

mojo,

I’ve looked into this extensively but see zero actual real world effects other then being a boogyman to hardcore FOSS nerds

mojo,

I’m really disappointed at the people trying to legitimately use r/place. They are getting shit on by Reddit, treated like absolute dirt, the site is being ruined, they’re letting themselves be fucked by a big corporation, they see others revolting mere pixels away from them, and what do they do? They try to put their little image on their as if it means anything anymore, and helping Reddit boost their IPO while fucking themselves over. If they’re not in on the revolt, they’re just pathetic.

mojo,

of course the losers on the osu sub have already organized a 1000 person discord call to camp their one logo. They really don’t care about the pathetic reddit abuse

mojo,

This title could also sound like a normal day in crypto/nft trading

mojo,

Republicans have no issue sacrificing people (especially kids in schools) for political gain.

mojo,

at this point, the EU may as well mandate the entire device
