merthyr1831, to linux in GNOME Merge Requests Opened That Would Drop X.Org Session Support

Yeah the political side of FOSS is the most frustrating part for everyone involved. I will say however that at least if Brodie’s videos are to be believed, Wayland is now actually being pushed to make decisions instead of fence-sitting for years (which is easy when your project isn’t hitting crunch time yet)

A small secondary device is not going to hurt your power consumption just for video playback. ARM chips are capable of 1080p playback just fine and have really decent power consumption numbers to boot.

merthyr1831, to linux in Linux TVs

“Smart” TVs are such a waste when they lock all the hardware and firmware into a device that’ll either be unsupported in a few years or too slow to work with new apps.

I’d much rather a dumb TV and stick a Roku/Raspberry Pi. via HDMI. You get all the same control but none of the bullshit

babe hold on i need to flash nix-os on this thing*

*and figure out how the fuck to use nix-os

merthyr1831, to linux in GNOME Merge Requests Opened That Would Drop X.Org Session Support

pretty sure the KDE work will be at least partially compatible with other desktops. one of the demos shown was specifically using the feature to swap between Wayland desktops without losing app state

merthyr1831, to linux in GNOME Merge Requests Opened That Would Drop X.Org Session Support

honestly feels like Wayland won’t get many of the fixes it needs until everyone is forced onto it and sends in bug reports. That’s gonna suck for lots of people including me but maybe it’s now or never

merthyr1831, to linux in TIL GNU/linux has 2 clipboards

Oh, that explains why my steamdeck layout randomly pastes text when I’m trying to use a mmb shortcut on my dang browser

merthyr1831, to news in [CNN] A ‘Pearl Harbor’ moment: Why didn’t Israel’s sophisticated border security stop Saturday’s attack?

Because it’s an expensive propaganda tool. Insanely expensive against cheap and plentiful Scud missiles.

Plus, there’s not much incentive to stop 100% of the missiles because that would make it harder to justify military aid. Though in this case it could easily be that the system just isn’t as effective as it likes to tell the people it’s encouraging to move into Palestinian homes.

merthyr1831, to worldnews in Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Iran say Israel has only itself to blame for Hamas attacks

Haaretz is being v critical of Netanyahu and on top of the decades of occupation of Gaza and West Bank I’m inclined to agree. Escalating racial violence to protect his own career, bro might as well have sent the call to Hamas HQ himself.

merthyr1831, to technology in France VPNs might be banned amid SREN Bill's new "unreasonable amendments"

The UK also recently tried banning VPNs. It simply isn’t possible. However, it’ll make prosecuting dissidents and people with good opsec a lot easier because they can just say “well you might not have anything incriminating on your hard drives but you DO have a VPN client” and use that to get a tiny victory against someone who would otherwise go free.

Pretty sure that was recently patched, as in last week, though it was open for years. Im sure something will take its place

merthyr1831, to linux in Most of us hate Microsoft, and yet many of us use VSCode
