I took the same plunge this week. I partitioned 125 GB to Windows and the remaining 350GB to Debian 12. I was making do w/ a 240 GB SSD previously so it's overkill, but I like the idea of disincentivizing my W11 usage by limiting the space available.
For me, there's still some workflows that need to be optimized in Debian, but overall I'm slowly transitioning towards it as my main driver.
Example: Lemmy Federated Airlines Flight 360 crashes with no survivors. Now the Lemmy Federation Air Crash Investigation Bureau finds the Flight Data Recorder and Cockpit voice recorder, and they take those boxes aboard Lemmy Investigation Bureau Airfleet Flight 180 back to the investigation headquarters for analysis. This...
I am not an expert, but I don't think there's a "good for one crash" stamp or anything on the recorders, so I'd imagine that since they're made as indestructible as possible, they could survive multiple plane crashes
Yes you would be able to few the content that is similar to our content here as well.
I do think a better way to think of it is Mastodon & Kbin though.. You can definitely interact w/ toots on Kbin which stands out when compared to Lemmy. However, when compared to the Mastodon, the experience is not nearly as integrated enough to warrant using it as a replacement.
Based on what I heard on the Hard Fork podcast (where they interviewed Adam Mosseri), I think the plan is to build Thread-specific UI/UX experiences/features that go beyond the average ActivityPub client currently.
We would be able to read the threads, but we wouldn't get access to any additional functionality built on top of the ActivityPub structure unless we replicated their code base.
I agree as well. People are well within their rights to refrain from using current/future products completely and voice their frustration, but there's also this undercurrent of people who want to be as vitriolic as possible and try to twist the knife on the way out of the door. It reeks of insecurity and an inability to regulate their emotions.
There's a kind of similar undercurrent/echo chamber in certain areas of the fediverse around Reddit as well, and I say this is a person who was actively using teddit pre-APIgate and has drastically reduced my reddit-browsing time as of late. Changing all of your comments to expletives about the current CEO is not as revolutionary or well-received as most people think it is
I personally think it's a bad idea, but I will try to judge the action instead of the person given how dedicated he likely is to the fediverse in general
I was able to follow my bookworym account on mastodon, but not sure how to use my existing accounts w/i bookwyrm. I think the functionality doesn't translate well to other fediverse products w/ different setups... kinda like trying to interact w/ tweets (posts?) via lemmy
I think they have a history of being amoral/indifferent towards the spaces they create/impact of their (lack of) moderation, and as if that wasn't enough, I also think that they are entering the fediverse at the worst possible time in terms of disdain for corporations
I think you are insinuating that because meta has money and power, he owes it to the community to hear them out. That's a capitalistic perspective that seems centered around either making money or having a larger 'market'. I wouldn't assume that this is the status quo for everyone involved in the fediverse.
Also, if Meta isn't willing to share its plans publicly, only to the owners of the largest instances online, I question their motives.
Curious if you have a rough example of what type of positive information that will be gained from the secret, closed-off meeting, and how it could benefit the community?
How do you think we could frontrun one of the largest tech companies in the world?
What was frustrating for me is they'd offer 20 Elon Musk articles daily, but now that they allow you to remove articles that match keywords, I've been much happier w/ my experience
The rumor I read was that he wants to be as poor at business as possible for the small things, so that when he has to refinance billions of dollars re: his loan w/ the banks, creditors will see how he's been operating as of late and are more likely to negotiate with him or reframe how much they think they can recoup.
So, stiff people for hundreds of thousands here and there in the hopes that you can shave a few billion off of the more important debt
Noob Question: If you aren't willing to deal with custom OSes like Linux (for computers) and Android Custom Roms (for phones), do you just not have any privacy at all?

When a Flight Data Recorder/Cockpit Voice Recorder is found, they are often taken on a plane and flown to an investigation headquarters. But what if the plane carrying those black boxes crash?

Wouldn't one be able to view Threads' content using other Lemmy client?
And prevent trackers, the official app uses.
