There are other sources for this article out there, but this was the best one I could find where the headline specified “Canada”.

Colloquially termed “forever chemicals” because they don’t break down or degrade, just accumulate…

Reddit was once an enjoyable experience but...

The toxicity became too much to bear. I couldn’t go a post or a comment anymore without someone wanting to give me a hard time for it. Downvote brigading, using antagonizing logic to try and bait for responses that they want. The users digging into your post history to bring up things that have nothing to do with, with what...

Several subreddits had mods more intent on sniffing their own farts as well. Glad to see it all gone…

Oh, man, with the reddit outage I totally forgot about QC, thank you for the reminder! All caught up now!

Also LOL at Claire being so high she was petting the walls.

jordanlund,

Sounds like you missed the splitting of the group… When one of the mods openly turned transphobic, a new group split off from the old one.

Not that ANY of that matters now. :)

I enjoyed it specifically because it let me show my wife what a decent Chaotic Neutral character acts like as opposed to Chaotic Good or Chaotic Evil. ;)

I owned an iPod touch and an iPad and I’ll never buy in to the Apple ecosystem again.

Update after update the devices got slower and slower until they were unusuable. With no way to roll back (at the time, not sure if that still holds) the only solution was to buy a new device.

I have yet to have that happen with any of my other devices. Android phones, tablets, Linux machines, Windows machines, game consoles, or Roku boxes.

Owning physical media > “owning” digital media.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.one avatar

You don’t own digital media. It can be taken away from you at any time for any reason or no reason at all:

reuters.com/…/amazon-settles-kindle-lawsuit-over-…

npr.org/…/microsoft-closes-the-book-on-its-e-libr…

yahoo.com/…/ps4-players-getting-locked-games-1239…

Not the first time, either…

“so you will only lose ownership, if GOG ceases to exist and you don’t have a local digital copy of your purchase”

Then you don’t own it.

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.one avatar

Out of print physical media is still available, it’s just out of print. This is why record/book/comic shops exist. Challenging to find? Sometimes, sure. But once something physical is put into the world, you don’t have some copyright holder clawing it back.

The OG line is “Jane, you ignorant slut.” from Saturday Night Live in the 70s.

But then most people online aren’t old enough to remember that…

Kind of sad if you think about it… After my heart attack and open heart surgery, I had considered setting up a bot to randomly send an /r/aww or /r/funny link to my wife every day after I die. Glad I didn’t now. :(

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.one avatar

Nope, because I deleted it. I see now it’s not even listed on the play store.

If saner minds prevail, and it comes back, I’ll reinstall it, but it doesn’t look like that’s happening soon.

Indiana Jones and Flash flopped hard. Could this be the beginning of the end for franchise films?

For the last few years franchise movies like star wars, marvel, etc. made money regardless of quality. However now it seems like audiences are being choosier when it comes to these kinds of tentpole releases. I’ve seen some people online say that the movie/theater industry is losing people in general but I don’t think...

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.one avatar

Indy is failing not because it’s a franchise, but because the audience for an 80 year old Harrison Ford is not going to the theater.

Flash failed for reasons other than it being part of a franchise. It failed because that franchise is not well liked, and in fact is in the process of being replaced.

Also, Ezra Miller is apparently a giant dick bag, turning off audiences.

I expect Blue Beetle will do worse due to featuring a character 90% of the movie going audience is unaware of, based on characters 99.9% are unaware of. At best people will go “So it’s an Iron Man / Spider-Man ripoff?”

Aquaman is the last of this generation of DC movies, hard to tell how it will turn out. The first one was the ONLY ONE of the DC films to hit the big $Billion mark.

Edit I should say, both Birds of Prey and the Suicide Squad deserved better. Victims of covid and day/date streaming.

WW84 can die in a fire though.

They actually did a decent job in the Flash. It’s tricky playing an 18/19 year old version of the main adult character on screen at the same time.

Can someone explain Asteroid City to me?

I just came back from seeing Asteroid City and it really has me at a loss. I’ve only seen The Grand Budapest hotel of his other movies but know of the inherent weirdness of his movies. I usually know how to classify and discuss a movie after I’ve seen it but this one left me kind of speechless. Not in the sense that I...

jordanlund,
@jordanlund@lemmy.one avatar

There are two stories being told at the same time. One is the story of a 1950s stage production called “Asteroid City” and the other is an actual presentation of the stage play “Asteroid City”.

It flips back and forth between the behind the scenes stage production and the actual play itself.

It’s stilted and awkward because that was the style of many plays in that era. If you look at playwrites like Harold Pinter or Samuel Beckett, you’ll get the same vibe.

Here are films of two of Beckett’s better known productions, this is the sort of vibe Anderson was going for. It was called “theater of the absurd”:

No, it doesn’t make much sense. Why is that woman buried in dirt up to her waist in the first act and up to her neck in the second? You aren’t supposed to ask those kinds of questions with these productions.

That’s going to bother a lot of people.

They haven’t yet realized that a platform dependent on user created content and user run moderation, is infinitely replaceable. See Fark and Digg.

Reddit and Twitter and just the latest to learn the lesson. Without your users, you may as well be MySpace.

Cheaper to wait for streaming or Blu Ray. Bonus for Blu Ray - you actually own something.

Even victims of previous mass exoduses are still around. Take a look at the state of digg or fark now…

Whatever happens won’t be over in a week, a month, or even a year really…
