janguv,

You’ve been gluetun-free all this time?

janguv,

Doesn’t look like you can sign up anonymously (unless you consider bitcoin and email anonymous, which they’re generally not).

You can. Paysafecard bought with cash. Only issue is you have to use your normal IP to sign up with (not behind a VPN), though you could use a mobile one or a public one somewhere probably.

janguv,

Always wondered how good the Remarkable series is. Have been tempted but the hardware isn’t that cheap really. Since discovering the PDF reader of Zotero and running it with a night mode plugin, I’ve found myself mainly just wanting to use that. The annotations are stored separately as well, so you don’t get massively inflated PDF filesizes (though if you want the option to export with embedded annotations, you can do that; you can also import embedded annotations to Zotero and then clear the file of them). Very cool.

janguv,

So do people in the US chiefly send messages via SMS rather than WhatsApp and others like it? That’s so bizarre to me haha.

janguv,

I would say that was the case in the UK generally about 5 years ago. But WhatsApp increasingly took over as the norm because it was clean, quick, relatively well encrypted, and made sending gifs and stickers easy and fun for the average user. Plus, the youth aren’t only wedded to iPhones unlike the US increasingly.

What are some FOSS programs that you think are a far better user experience than their counterparts? (sh.itjust.works)

I used Plex for my home media for almost a year, then it stopped playing nice for reasons I gave up on diagnosing. While looking at alternatives, I found Jellyfin which is much more responsive, IMO, and the UI is much nicer as well....

janguv,

Yeah it is pretty solid. I used to use KeepassX, which while also a very cool project, was a bit more tinkering than needed. I hosted the database on a mainstream cloud provider though, and figured at that point, you might as well use the cloud storage of a company with a great security reputation instead and just bundle all together. And so BitWarden.

janguv,

Are we allowed FOSS alternatives to common FOSS apps lol? In which case, I’m saying NeoStore > F-Droid.

Also, separately, Zotero > all commercial reference manages and increasingly over PDF readers too.

janguv,

Teams

shudders

janguv,

Oh really? That’s surprising. Always been smooth for me and I much prefer the UX

janguv,

You’re right that it mustn’t be the only prism, yes. But maybe we shouldn’t also splinter things like functionality and appearance/usability from the merits of “free as in freedom” either? One of the things that makes FOSS apps work better than alternatives, when they do, is the fact that it’s not looking for extra revenue streams all the time with marketing-led nonsense features, bloating the hell out of their product, redesigning just to seem modern (usability be damned), and so on.

And what happens when you have a FOSS alternative with committed and talented devs, a large user base and resources tends to be something truly superior.

For just $30 + $5 a month, I'm able to share everything with my family. Here's how.

(Disclaimer: yes, I bought a $180 4TB Crucial SSD too, but my family split the cost with me since they’re going to use my Jellyfin server. Whether that counts towards the final cost is up to you. And the electricity cost is pretty negligible to run a Le Potato as a server, but I guess you can count that too.)...

janguv,

This would be my preferred option, but: I do applaud OP’s enthusiasm and dedication. He’s learnt a lot of things about it, whereas because of my setup (as you described) I know fuck all. Plus, having his sort of setup gives you your own library over time (should that be desired).

janguv,

Quick question: What’s the goto distro for newbies these days, is it still Ubuntu? Back in the day (like a decade ago I think) I played about with both Ubuntu and Mint. I’m curious to try again, but no idea where to start. Also, is it possible/feasible/okay to dualboot on MacOS?

janguv,

Thanks! Re switching - yeah, I agree. What do most people do in this situation – buy second hand or find older devices and just boot Linux off those? Use separate drives and boot off those? Like, what are the typical range of hardware decisions facing someone who thinks they wanna give Linux a real go?

janguv,

Thanks for the suggestions!

janguv,

Right but zlib is full strength at this point, and libgen remained unaffected. Annas archive gives an extensive coverage of it all.

janguv,

Basically: American teenagers/kids think Android is backwards and uncool, even though this is false; Android historically and presently more capable than iOS etc. But big problem for Google in this market. Partly driven by fact that most popular Android phones are cheap and full of bloatware. Some optimism in the Pixel sales and Google should push their own hardware more to address the problem /end

nevernevermore, to piracy

Any recommendations of streaming app for iphone? I use stremio on all my other devices, and currently just have a tab for movie-web.app on my phone, but looking for a better solution.

janguv,

This makes the most sense. Converted into a webapp also

janguv,

Think you’ve missed the point a bit of OP’s comment. They’re asking not how the end-user is protected from copyright claims, but how the debrid service itself is.

janguv,

What about the actual files there – risk of malware/viruses?

janguv,

That was actually a correct usage, fwiw (said as a native speaker with a penchant for caring about language – so that’s all but confirmed).

janguv,

Here’s hoping YouTube Revanced on Android and Adguard on desktop continues to work, eh…

janguv,

Yeah likely cause is something outdated. All working fine on my end

janguv,

Forgive my ignorance – what’s REX?

janguv,

Think it’s possible if you can install via KDE/Macports

janguv,

This was gonna be my recommendation also.

Is it wrong to pirate movies I've purchased digitally and load onto my Plex server?

Just would like to have a discussion on the topic. I’ve purchased around 20ish movies/shows on Vudu, and my wife has grown to be unhappy with Vudu’s UI and especially how the watch progress works. I am curious what some others thoughts on this are. My initial thoughts are I recognize I’ve purchased a license to watch the...

janguv,

And when it comes to morality, that’s something you can only define for yourself.

Well the point of his coming here to discuss the ethics of it was to go beyond his own starting moral intuitions, to consider arguments and perspectives that pertain to the ethics of the act in question. The view that morality is a personal matter is a non-starter as far as moral philosophy goes. The ball is in OP’s court over who/what to consult to find relevant ethical considerations, and it’s up to him to reason those out and whether to follow them, but that doesn’t make the ethics itself something for him to define.

janguv,

Does their gpodder sync thing work again yet? That’s the main reason I tried it out before, but it was inactive when I checked. NextCloud requires your own server, right?

janguv,

I tried Floris recently. It looks really promising, but I found the swipe input to be maddeningly frustrating - obscure words chosen over common alternatives etc. That was the reason I most wanted to migrate from Gboard. Alas. There’s still nothing out there in this respect which beats the old Swype back in the day for me (though of course it wasn’t FOSS).

Anonfiles is shutting down (anonfiles.com)

After trying endlessly for two years to run a file sharing site with user anonymity we have been tired of handling the extreme volumes of people abusing it and the headaches it has created for us. Maybe it is hard to understand but after tens of million uploads and many petabytes later all work of handling abuse was automated...

janguv,

That strikes me as really out there. I think the reality is that there’s a lot of people into CP sadly – as an absolute but not relative number – and you don’t need many out there to have a prolific amount of content, which we know from our own special interest cases.

This is what always unnerves me about privacy tech. I always feel the pull of using high level encryption with whatever I’m doing – file storage, communication, etc – but a part of me is always saddened at the same time with how much abuse is effectively facilitated by anonymity and privacy.

But as the horrors of the dark web have shown, it’s a battle that law enforcement will never win – our most effective weapon as a society against CP and related abuse is Chris Hansen (I shouldn’t joke) …is engaging with and changing the material causes of this phenomenon. There will always be tools for sickos; the challenge is to prevent people from becoming as sick as they are, and when sick, finding ways to prevent them from abusing others.

Sorry for slightly OT rant lol.

janguv,

I always like the idea of private messaging apps in principle, though the reality is that the absolute worst people in humanity inevitably end up using them for their depraved and awful ends. So you know, a little from column A, a little from column B.

janguv,

I would say the only potential issue (and it’s a remote one without any irl consequences as far as I know) is this: your IP is logged, and you can’t use a VPN to create an account or buy a subscription either, so potentially that information is all there. Plus, there is a download history for every file – I’ve no idea what they keep on record or how long. So in theory with the right subpoenas, information such as your IP, your bank details (if you didn’t choose an anonymous method), and the exact files you pirated are available.

I’ve no idea how much of that could be realized in practice. And I would like to be wrong about it all.

That said, the likelihood of all this is probably very slim indeed. I would describe this as the only potential catch. It’s worth noting that you wouldn’t be able to be penalized for an action such as “sharing” copyrighted content though, since you’d only be downloading, not seeding.

janguv,

Your edit clarification is wrong btw. It should read: only applies when using different external IP addresses.

janguv,

Ah thanks for this, but Apple silicon support would be essential in my case

janguv,

My life goal isn’t to make pirating as easy as possible for myself. There are plenty of reasons to use MacOS over Windows (bracketing Linux distros for the moment), chiefly that it’s not a broken and endlessly frustrating experience on a daily basis for everyday tasks.

I don’t game on PC, which is the only reason I’d have a machine running Windows in my household.

I use Android and MacOS as my operating systems of choice, and that is more than suitable for piracy setups for most media. E.g. music (soulseek), films and series (real debrid + stremio), adblocking (Adguard, root mode). I don’t have a particular need to pirate software or games.

janguv, (edited )

I’ll look into this! Is Jellyfin something I could set up on a router (FritzBox)? I’ll find out more

Edit: got this working now - thanks for the tip!

janguv,

Yup, works flawlessly, and that’s the setup I have at the moment. Just wondered if it was possible on the router though, since my main device is a laptop and I don’t have it running all the time.

janguv,

Thanks for the rec! I’ll check it out

janguv,

Yep, that’s why I tried it out – because it added Xtream support. What I meant was that it downloads the channel listings fine, but when you go to play anything, nothing loads. I think it might be because it requires a string in the user agent login field (unlike most Xtream login panels).

janguv,

Yeah it’s incredibly easy and you don’t even notice. Can use the activity monitor to check whether it’s running natively or through that translation layer, and often you wouldn’t even realise. Maybe this Kodi addon would work then, given Rosetta, I don’t know. But I’m not the biggest fan of Kodi tbh. Presently I have the service running through Jellyfin and that’s great, so would probably not bother with Kodi now.

janguv,

Not all the premium features. Audio quality is restricted, e.g.

janguv,

Absolutely. Soulseek really is incomparable. And it has the added advantage of being a throwback to the days of p2p sharing through dedicated clients.

janguv,

This is the right answer.

janguv,

Has anyone tried using the recently released Stremio Web with RD? My understanding is that it’s more or less fully featured.

Edit: I mean on iOS (iPad specifically). I think it’s probably a viable solution.

Any sites you guys use for good quality Premiere League soccer streams? Rip navmix :(

janguv,

I miss Ace and the old Bloodzeed streams. Didn’t know it was still being used

janguv,

I think to the uninitiated it’s a bit of a minefield. Are there guides to the best providers, and ones you can subscribe to using anonymous forms of payment?

janguv,

Yeah I’ve heard this before. I have a friend who got one, word of mouth in his case too. It works well for him and it’s tempting to try, but (a) he’s one of the least tech savvy people I know, so his recommendation counts for little, and (b) the service plays badly with Nord and he was advised to get SurfShark, which I don’t fancy doing. (And in my jurisdiction, VPN usage would be strongly advisable.)

janguv,

OnePlus are pretty good with their roms.

used to be pretty good with their roms.
