My thoughts exactly. Seems like the authors don't want to confront the idea that policymakers simply don't give a fuck about the climate, so the explanation has to be that scientists failed to communicate.

Beehaw still hasn't gotten wind of it. I wonder what affects how fast community names "spread" in ActivityPub. Come to think of it I don't actually know how ActivityPub works in the first place; I wonder if there's an explanation of it available somewhere (something that isn't just the spec)

Quantum mechanics explains these ultra-light particles as “fuzzy” because they exhibit wave-like behavior

How's that different from any other particle? Aren't they all waves in quantum fields?

Speak for yourselves, I'm an idiot

Jesus this is so fucking depressing. Feels like every year it's "the hottest year on record", and every year there's the same old excuses about why we can't do anything about CO^2^ levels (which are also at record highs)

I thought I read somewhere that they're not making a profit yet. I mean just the fuel costs alone have to be astronomical

They could well try to pull the classic "embrace, extend, extinguish" move. Appear to embrace an open standard, then start writing proprietary extensions for it, and then use their clout to get everyone to stay on their network and abandon the open source version (because everyone's on Meta's network)

AI models feeding on AI data will lead to 'model collapse', researchers say (web.archive.org)

Using model-generated content in training causes irreversible defects, a team of researchers says. "The tails of the original content distribution disappears," writes co-author Ross Anderson from the University of Cambridge in a blog post. "Within a few generations, text becomes garbage, as Gaussian distributions converge and...

But then you’re training on more and more outdated data

You mean to say that if I leave my door unlocked, somebody might come in? This is shocking news!

Putin orders creation of psychiatric institute to “study the behavior of LGBT people”, Russian health minister warns of "suicides across the country" (web.archive.org)

On June 14, Russia’s State Duma passed a bill banning surgical operations “aimed at changing a person’s sex” and changing one’s gender marker in legal documents in its first reading. During the session, multiple parties in the Duma vocally criticized the document. After Russia’s Minister of Health Mikhail Murashko...

Yeah that's the pipe dream people are pushing now. Somehow Russia will collapse because of this war

Nitrogen-induced hypoxia is painless, but in a sub like that CO^2^ might turn out to be a big problem, and that is not painless.

But yeah, the pressure vessel is (or, probably, was) fiberglass. It's cheap to use but once it cracks it'll absolutely shatter – this is why "real" subs tend to use metal – and that's pretty much what I assume has happened. Either that or they've been bobbing on the surface with their air slowly running out, because the hatch can't be opened from the inside.

I don’t see why people would even go to a site to read AI generated articles and be bombarded with ads.

Doesn’t have to be voluntary on the user’s part. Maybe they clicked a link on Google? Or maybe a site they’ve been reading for ages suddenly switches to “AI editors” and it’s never really announced to the users in a clear way

I really wouldn’t tell anyone to rely on ChatGPT for technical support. It’s fine if you already sort of know what you’re doing, but it has a tendency to “lie” very convincingly and come up with either broken or even potentially harmful solutions

claims he isn’t far right

Right-wing extremists do this to make it seem like their position is widely held and “normal.” The worst extreme right-wing party we have here in Finland (Valta kuuluu kansalle or “Power Belongs to the People”, aka Valta kuuluu Kremlille or “Power Belongs to the Kremlin”) claims to be center right. The head of the party is a pro-Russia flat earther who doesn’t believe in climate change, and the party is staunchly anti-immigration
