BioShock Fans Should Check Out This Underwater Creature Feature (gamerant.com)

Leviathan sounds like an absolute success on paper. The director was an indie darling who recently stepped into blockbusters with Rambo: First Blood Part II and Cobra. Writers David Webb Peoples and Jeb Stuart had recently finished Blade Runner and Die Hard, respectively. Stan Winston, the special effects wizard behind Jurassic...

Vince Gilligan teases "mild" sci-fi show with Rhea Seehorn (www.avclub.com)

After defying expectations twice, Vince Gilligan is going for a hat trick. The creator of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul satisfied fans with two spectacular shows, put Albuquerque on the crime series map, and rarely, if ever, made a mistake. With his next show, he’s going back to his roots....

inkican,

@CorinnaBechko Nice - welcome!

inkican,

It’s still pretty derivative, in an open way, with nods to everything from Terminator, Blade Runner and District 9, to Apocalypse Now, among others, the connecting themes being the confrontation between humankind and technology, American militarism, fear of the other. Usefully, all of this chimes with the current, fiery and fearmongering debate about the advance of artificial intelligence.

Everything you can say about The Creator's 'lack of originality' you can say about Edwards' 'Godzilla' and 'La La Land.' Those other films are scored at 76% and 91%, respectively. Additionally, Godzilla - that tired old reboot of the same movie we've re-watched for the past fifty years - made $524,976,069 worldwide. La La Land - that stale celebration of Hollywood musicals - $151,058,124 at the domestic box office.

Shame on Gareth Edwards for making accessible science fiction for a worldwide audience - wasn't he thinking about the poor, angry nerds who want 'original scifi' despite the fact that they refuse to articulate what 'original' means and they refuse to create their own 'original' scifi and subject it to the same hostile market they make up?

I'm being sarcastic for a reason - The Creator is AMAZING scifi. It doesn't matter if TheArtsDesk.com dunks on it - If I'm still carrying a 2012 award on the banner of my website, the LAST thing I'd be doing is casting aspersions on anyone with the guts and the grit to go out there and actually try to do something that celebrates everything we love about the science fiction genre. I'm not a marketing guy for Gareth Edwards, but credit where credit is due - we need to support original, imperfect scifi if we want to see more of it.

Deride The Creator at your own peril - lest you be damned to another 10 years of MCU and Fast and the Furious movies.

Took time to gather my thoughts after a sneak preview of ‘The Creator’ – this gorgeous, action-packed movie is SO much more than the reviews are saying. I’m still an anxiety-ridden mess so I don’t go out, but thanks to a friend I got to see ‘The Creator’ anyway.

Make no mistake – we’ve left the ‘hater therapy’ portion of sci-fi, where we try to make movies and stories for the haters to ‘bring them along.’ The Creator just goes all-out to tell an fun, interesting science fiction story and it doesn’t care whether /r/scifi likes it or not. THAT, my friends, is makes it great.

But wait, Jackson – you say – nothing about this movie is ORIGINAL. The script sounds like it was generated by an AI! Yes, yes – we’ll get to the complaints in a few moments. Let’s set the stage correctly. The Creator is the celebration of original scifi we needed – it feels like what great science fiction used to feel like – unshackled by public opinion, content to let you figure out what’s going on.

It reminded me in some ways of ‘La La Land’ when it came out. Before you ask ‘What on Earth are you talking about?’ Let me explain: A movie review of ‘La La Land’ calls it ‘a gorgeously photographed, unashamedly nostalgic, bittersweet marriage of the modern and the traditional’ which, if you think about it, is a perfect description of ‘The Creator.’ It, too, is a gorgeously photographed, unashamedly nostalgic, bittersweet marriage of the modern and the traditional science fiction.

Just as Casablanca works because it’s a collection of tropes told in a way that people can relate to on a human level, The Creator doesn’t attempt to be THE MOST ORIGINAL SCIFI IN THE WORLD. Rather, it’s trying to be the best science fiction story for the most people. It’s trying to bring people together. That’s why I loved it and that’s why I recommend it. It’s also why I think the sci-fi community is doing a massive disservice to itself if it doesn’t support this original, well-told science fiction story. But this isn’t ‘hater therapy’ time – it’s time to talk about The Creator. Here are some quick notes: https://inkican.com/the-creator-scifi-thats-so-much-more/

inkican,

@Emperor That’s why I’m writing all this. It’s not about marketing or influence – we want to champion good, original science fiction when we see it. Even if it’s not perfect – Hollywood responds to butts in seats. This is an opportunity for us to say ‘more, please!’ That’s the only way we’ll get to see more of it.

Saw The Creator today in Dolby at AMC Theaters. Highly recommend. Thoroughly enjoyed it. 10/10 for me and in my top favorites of the year so far. If you love Rogue One, sci-fi and/or Gareth Edwards work, definitely go see it in the theaters on the big screen.

Everybody go see The Creator. Now.

inkican,

@memfree Yeah - you're missing the point. This isn't about PR - this is about good scifi. The b/g noise is PR, too. I watched it - I had a great time. You and everyone else who's said 'why don't they make original scifi anymore?' needs to see this - it's a great ride.

inkican,

@memfree I'm sorry if my passion came across as ordering you about. That said, you're making a huge mistake if you don't support this movie.

inkican,

I finally watched the screener someone gave me - The Creator is brilliant at not being brilliant. It's a crowd-pleaser, the coolest cyberpunkiest ride I've taken in a while. Every scifi nerd who ever said "why isn't there any original scifi?" needs to get out and support this movie now. There may never be another chance to see something this new again.

Apple TV Plus’ sci-fi epic Foundation finished its second season with a bang, but it also still seems to have plenty of story left to tell. ‘Fingernails’ Review: Jessie Buckley and Riz Ahmed Prove Chemistry Isn’t a Science in a Wise, Tender Sci-Fi Romance (www.msn.com)

It’s the stock answer that many a happy long-term couple has given prying friends and relatives to explain why they haven’t married: “We don’t need a piece of paper to prove our love.” True enough. The Creator is next-level sci-fi. So why isn't it being promoted that way? (www.msn.com)

The response from critics who’ve gotten a chance to see The Creator at preview screenings has been overwhelmingly positive (on social media at least, full reviews are still embargoed). The film will probably need that good word of mouth when it opens in theaters on September 29, because the rest of the marketing campaign for...

Scifi is a Top 20 magazine on K.bin! I just saw the numbers today - we moved past /m/apple to take the 20th spot. I'm not going to change our designation until we see if /m/scifi remains in the Top 20 for a month. But this is great progress - thank you, everyone!

inkican,

I'mma go out on a limb and admit that I posted this article knowing that I disagreed with the premise. JJ Abrams is incredibly talented - he proved that with Cloverfield and Super 8. Additionally, he took Star Trek into a new direction despite its challenges and he remains scandal free unlike some other scifi directors (looking at you Bryan Singer). So you can be angry about TFA or Fringe if you want, but the guy does quality work in an industry full of bad actors. Credit where credit is due.

"It's the content, stupid." - Quick Notes to Supercharge K.Bin (kbin.social)

Like you, I'm a passionate user of K.Bin but lately, I'm noticing that things are getting kinda stale around here. The most recent thread in this, the top-level magazine on K.Bin, is 4 days old. Many other top 25 magazines are also suffering from a similar lack of fresh content. I run /m/scifi and it's been continuing to grow...

inkican, (edited )

No, the problem is that you're a person who posted 34 diff. items to K.Bin and two bug reports and you think that qualifies you to comment on K.Bin overall. Not for nothing - what qualifies me to speak on this topic is that I've been posting stuff every day to /m/scifi (with time out for vacations and illness). I know there are things wrong with scifi and K.Bin - but I'm putting the time in to make things better. What are you doing? You moderate /m/men and your stated goal is "This magazine is dedicated to discussions of issues that men and boys face, especially disadvantages or discrimination due to their gender, from an egalitarian perspective." People want stuff to read, not people to point at 'the problem.' K.bin is fine for what it is - if you want 'more hands on deck', go be one of those hands.

inkican,

Cool beans - I'll shoot you a thread about my latest audiobook.
