I am running my instance for myself only. I used the Hetzner Cloud service for it. Surprisingly, it works on the cheapest instance (CX11)! And I mean, that is dead cheap.
I’m running Debian. If you want to check out everything yourself, feel free to do so. However, if you want an easy-as-they-come install, I would definitely recommend github.com/ubergeek77/Lemmy-Easy-Deploy . It takes care of everything. From the webserver, via de database to the SSL certificate.

Belgium: yes! We drink tap water. Straight from the tap. Hardness varies from city to city. At my home I have a filter to make the water softer. That helps the taste but also keeps all faucets etc running.
