My head is spinning ... from not sleeping last night, from two conferences a week apart diappearing the last three weeks, from the deadlines I'm behind on, from finding my elderly friend dead in his house ... one , day , at a , time , right ? @actuallyautistic
The Harvard library research guide for folklore listed the following as core skills for folklorists: deep listening, observant participation, cross-cultural comparison, historical contextualization, collaborative interpretation, cultural documentation, empathetic engagement, and good storytelling. I love this. #whatDoFolkloristsDo#folklore@folklore
I'm at an anthropology conference. A speaker/anthropologist, who is a dad of an autistic child, wrote a book, Unstrange Minds, which is a mix of scholarship (a cultural history of autism) and personal storytelling. I was suspicious at first but it seems like he's supporting the neurodiversity paradigm. Anyone read it? Might be worth checking out? @actuallyautistic
Whenever I'm chill, sitting on the couch, my daughter will come sit next to me. But being a squirming mass of 11yo energy, there's always a part of her that's moving. She apparently doesn't do it consciously because if I tell her to be still, she invariably answers that she is.
So I inch a little to the side, so that we are not touching, barely, but when she realizes, she's like "Hey! 😡" and closes the gap.
@aloopapu@independentpen@actuallyautistic I only like somebody parking right next to me in a mostly-empty lot when I’m in my Honda Element and they are also in a Honda Element! 🤣
In honor of Indigenous People's Day, take a minute to brush up on the "savage slot" – a pernicious feature of the Western worldview that laid the groundwork for the colonial era and continues to shape mainstream perspectives today.
Hey @actuallyautistic how do you pace yourself at an office job? I've been contracting for years but as of this week I'm an employee. My style of work is all or nothing, but I sense that isn't going to be sustainable in this context, and I suspect the allistics aren't working like that either anyway. How do you reset or recharge throughout the workday? How do you know if you're doing "enough" versus overperforming? How do you take care of yourself in socially sanctioned ways?
@nddev
Also I am incorrigibly earnest; can't help it; have been embarrassed of it; have masked it; have decided it's just who I am. Anecdotally from my online lurking, I do believe it's an autistic thing @actuallyautistic
Alt text isn't just helpful for the sight-impaired. By reading alt text I can identify what the OP is calling attention to in the pic, helping me get the joke or social commentary that would otherwise be illegible to me. (Without this I'm like, I see a thousand details and I don't know which one matters to you.) #ActuallyAutistic
