@bookstodon Just out of curiosity, how close are you to your reading goal for the year? I need to read 12 more books to meet the goal I set for myself. 📚📚📚📚
Not everyone works the same way, of course. We've discussed before that reading goals are counterproductive for many. Having a goal really helps me, but it doesn't work for everyone. Just like reading for pleasure and reading to write a review are very different processes.
@kimlockhartga@bookstodon Totally agree, I don’t set a goal and have only been writing down what I read for 3 years but this year Ive read 15 more books than last year so I’m very happy with that
@kimlockhartga@bookstodon I feel like I've read less this year but I'm 7 away from my goal, and considering the kind of things I read at this time of year, that's easily achievable!
@kimlockhartga@bookstodon I’m at 65 of 66, but I’ve already increased that cap a couple of times. I don’t remember what it was initially. Maybe 36. This years goal was to read every day and thanks to that I’m killing it. I’ll end up with about twice the best number I’ve done in any year over last two decades.
@kimlockhartga@bookstodon@Likewise My biggest goal is to finish my Libby books before they go back! I belong to one library consortium that loans for one week. Just got Covenant of Water and realized it’s 700 pages. The pressure is real.
@Arlenecw@bookstodon@Likewise Only one week?!? That's unreasonable for, as you say, for any longer book. (I hear that The Covenant of Water is very good.) I get Libby books for two weeks at one library system, and up to 21 days (if not a new title) at the other library.
@kimlockhartga@bookstodon To motivate myself to keep a reading routine (not to read more, just to simply read), I have a wish to read 1 book per week. That's a wish (not a goal) to read at least 52 books per year. I'm on 61 atm which means I've succeeded keeping my routine, and it also means less pressure to keep at it during December which is always a b*tch of a month to keep routines...
Congrats to everyone picking up at least one book in 2023 🥳
@kimlockhartga@bookstodon I've met my goals @thestorygraph and am on track to achieve my primary goal which was read no more than half the 454 I read last year
@brucy@kimlockhartga@bookstodon@thestorygraph The page count shows the average length is around 280 pages. Due to a congenital disability I work from home and only part time so lots of reading time 😊
@kimlockhartga@brucy@bookstodon@thestorygraph I try to aim for 300-ish as a general average. In 2021, I set myself a 350 page average goal (238 books), and made it, but so many of my preferred recreational genres are in the low 200s that I had to read some clunky omnibuses just to 'catch up'. Around 300 means the nonfiction I read more easily makes up for the short mysteries 😀
@ronsboy67@brucy@bookstodon@thestorygraph Whoa! I thought I was the only one who had goals of 300 or more! I read everything from short stories to graphic novels to big ol' doorstopper tomes.
@kimlockhartga@bookstodon I didn’t set a goal, but your question sent me to my #StoryGraph to check, & I’m pleased. (Plus it’s a chance to show off one of the cool features, the mood chart!)
@kimlockhartga@bookstodon it's been so long since I read long-form on the regular (because of *gestures at the whole world around us) BUT I AM READING MORE of late... I reread the last sixth of an old favourite and the first eight chapters of its sequel last night...
It's funny, so many people (including a younger me) dive into books to feel safe... I get the feeling that I have to feel safe and loved to ignore the rest of the world for that long.
@darrenmorin@kimlockhartga@bookstodon No reading goals here; no racing through books unless I can't wait to see where things are going! Books are not numbers but pure pleasure and escapism! On average, I read one book a week and always have so I usually allow myself only 2 library books at a time. LOL
@kimlockhartga@bookstodon According to Goodreads: 46 books completed You’re on track! I read a lot during the first half of the year, especially while I was on my #roadtrip. However, #kdrama took up my life and attention for the second half of the year so reading slowed down. I like the idea of finishing a book a week, more or less. #audiobooks make that possible most of the time, except when I get caught up in a lengthy book, something I've been doing recently. Goals are good.
@kimlockhartga@bookstodon I've rarely ever set a specific goal, just the general hope to read as much as possible. 2019 was my peak year, with 106 read, then a decline the next few years. It was only 63 last year, but should be close to 80 this year.
@templetongate@bookstodon Each year is so different for each of us, depending not only on what books come out, but also what is going on with us at the time.
@kimlockhartga@bookstodon I set a low (for me) goal this year. I’ve more than doubled it, and I have a couple more to read before end of year. But I’m retired, no kids, am alone a good bit, so reading (and knitting & spinning) are what I do. Otherwise I’d have to clean house or something equally undesirable
@kimlockhartga I've never had a reading goal. I've got one book and one audiobook going at all times. I probably go through around 75-100 per year. When I was young I was often reading up to 4 books concurrently. My brain was good at overclocking back then. 😄 @bookstodon
