Yes, the enthusiasm for NFTs has cratered, but we shouldn't use junk analysis to make that point. Too many news outlets uncritically reprinted a bad "study", and the resulting eye-catching headline was widely shared.

@molly0xfff It's pretty frightening how a story that relied upon a report by "dappGambl" (lmao) propagated so quickly simply because someone thought "hey, everybody hates NFTs, let's write an article that will get shared widely even though who the f*ck knows or cares what dappGambl actually is"

In the case of NFTs it's pretty benign but damn it's scary to think how this quest for clicks could be used by bad actors for something that actually matters...

@paninid @law - I wasn't aware of the term but yes I think it does deserve an article - incredibly common in smaller companies in my experience.

@ianbradbury @paninid @law To clarify, by "small" I meant a handful of founders and typically no real "IT" person or department.

@nikhileshde @paninid @law I only work with the small ones 🤗 but that doesn't surprise me.

Confirmed! You can now do regular textual search in the search bar in Mastodon (on mastodon.social at least)...

Question for fellow who practice in the areas of marketing and advertising in the U.S.:

Have there been any enforcement actions arising out of the FTC's Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising that do not involve fraud, e.g., for simply failing to state that a social media post by an influencer was sponsored?

I know they send out warning letters but I have not found anything that resulted in any sort of penalty. TIA

On July 15, 1944, in Bristol England, the "Park Street Riot" occurred as 400 Black soldiers confronted 120 MPs over pub access. Observers later recounted that locals rooted for the Black troops. Like the Battle of Bamber Bridge a year earlier, this event underscored the racism Black troops faced as well as the disconnect between how they were treated overseas vs in their own country.

@chessert @Deglassco @blackmastodon @BlackMastodon No doubt. Even more important when some places like Florida are trying to suppress that history.

@ConnorMoran @law Not trying to be pedantic, but one thing to keep in mind is that there are a lot of "investments" that are not securities -- art, gold, coins, etc. Those things can be packaged as securities, e.g., an investment fund that purchases a work of art and sells shares.

@ConnorMoran @law I'd be happy if it was regulated the same way that we regulate gambling, since that's what most of it is used for.

Louis Daniel Armstrong's relationship with racism influenced not only his music but also the broader discourse on race in America. The barriers he broke as a Black musician are undeniable. The “Uncle Tom” criticism levied at him by some prominent Black Americans of the day was a reflection of the complex & sometimes contentious relationship between art, politics, & race in the United States.

👀 Very important article by @jdp23 that explains how bad actors (e.g., Libs of TikTok) could easily identify targets (e.g., trans and trans-friendly folks) to harass in the if/and when decides to federate...
