Just in case most of you missed Interrupting Criminalization's virtual program last week on 1MillionExperiments I'll provide some highlights. Marieme Kaba and Eva (sorry I forgot her last name were talking about how the project started so long story short:

  1. if you want something different from the status quo which keeps people locked under the oppression of the police, then you have to build something else.
    1/3
fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@blackmastodon
2) If you are going to build something new, be prepared to fail. Not everything will work and many things won't. You have to keep thinking and creating and trying until you can get something to stick. It will be a process, not an event.

  1. safety and security are not the same thing. Safe communities are what people are trying to build. Security is what you have to rely on when safety is missing. The police are security, not safety. 2/3
fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@blackmastodon
4) Get used to the fact not everyone will agree. Even abolitionists don't all agree on tactics. AND you may not get big grant $$ because what you are trying to do actually attacks the systems grant funders are trying to tinker with but essentially uphold.

  1. Be bold...be visionary...be community connected and orientated...stay in for the long haul. 3/3

@blackmastodon It's hard for me to be online now. The world is on fire and govt leaders just watch while women's children all over the world are being slaughtered. Brings back so many memories of the Rwandan genocide. Everyone just watched while a million people were murdered in the open. I'll leave this Jose James cut with you. Many of the projects I've shared with you on come from IMExperiments website. Just got a notice yesterday that INTERRUPTING CRIMINALIZATION is having a virtual event TODAY, 12/6 at 4:30PM with a doc about IME showing solutions that go beyond the police. Still time to register. Please Boost for visibility because time is short. Thanks

If any of you game, give a look at The Wagadu Chronicles which did early release on Steam. It is a non-European setting, based on African cultural story telling, with African based player characters. The developers are still working on it...early access🙄 but you might want to take a look. It's a 1st person, click to move, survival game. https://store.steampowered.com/app/2464400/The_Wagadu_Chronicles/

@oscarjiminy @blackmastodon I've been in all the alphas. The play will be interesting when they get it all together. It will be a niche game no matter what. The combat is turned based and the PvP is not like anything people will be familiar with. I think they are basically a group of table top players/developers who wanted to make an MMO. It remains to be seen whether the two communities can blended into a good game. There's good bones there. There's also aTTRPG rulebook.

@BigAngBlack @blackmastodon @BlackMastodon Hm...I don't particularly care for rock music but there are some pieces I do like particularly when it blends in with other genres. My question is, and I don't know the answer, but did Lenny make himself available to Black media? I mean Prince did....Don't remember his history because I wasn't paying attention to his development, but I can't remember him reaching out to the community. If folks know the answer, I'd love to hear it.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@BigAngBlack @blackmastodon @BlackMastodon Yep connections are one thing, but being available is something else yeah? Like what stuff did he do for community? I just don't know and if he did do things maybe he wanted to keep it low key. There's many reasons why Black media may not have highlighted him.

Returning to the south: what can ‘reverse migration’ do for Black Americans? | Documentary films | The Guardian

https://www.theguardian.com/film/2023/nov/27/south-to-black-power-hbo-documentary-charles-blow

> In a new HBO documentary, writer explores how moving to the south could lead to important political and societal change for Americans

@blackmastodon
@BlackMastodon

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@venitamathias @BigAngBlack @blackmastodon @BlackMastodon Also...and I haven't seen the documentary - I only read his column when he first wrote about it and have talked to him when he visited UF - all Black people in America could move to the south but unless gerrymandering is ended, the political structures will remain the same. It's not like the Black people who already live there don't know what to do.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@venitamathias @BigAngBlack @blackmastodon @BlackMastodon Exactly right! It's not just about moving to Atlanta. The maps can always be redrawn to deprive black voting blocs from having power. The greatest # of Black folks in the US already live in the South. It's not a numbers issue. It's gerrymandering.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@venitamathias @BigAngBlack @blackmastodon @BlackMastodon UGH! Now I'm riled up because this "move to the south" thing once again puts the onus on Black folks for carrying white America. Here's a radical thought: How about droves of progressive White folks move to the south to gerrymandered districts and turn them over. How about that?! Let some White folks take responsibility for ending their relatives chicanery..... And lets see how long they remain "progressive." 😡

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@venitamathias @BigAngBlack @blackmastodon @BlackMastodon Right, because Maryland isn't gerrymandered so votes count.

Here's the last of the recommendations from my Ethiopians friends. This is Tewodros Kassahun Germamo, known as "Teddy Afro." It isn't my usual chill kind of music, but I read that he often sings about political themes, so that's good enough for me. As I did last week, I am posting some short videos that explain the terms people are tossing around now. Again, think what you think, but try to educate yourself on the law. The first video explains what genocide is. It is a complicated subject which is hard to boil down into a short video, but the following one is decent. 1/4
https://youtu.be/KTUr8uZTh_A?si=PR_Ud85TY0Xfvdhd

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

Genocides happened before the coining of the phrase see e.g. attempted extermination of Indigenous in the US, the killing and deaths of Africans during Transatlantic slavery, as well as the Armenian situation mentioned. In addition after WW2 genocides continue to happen with frightening regularity. It can only be applied to the 4 groups mentioned : national, ethnical (ethnic), racial, religious. 2/4

@blackmastodon

Crimes v. Humanity is a serious international crime although as yet there is no treaty or convention on it. But, it is considered part of customary international law. Notice that genocide did not protect against killing political groups. But crimes v. humanity does. Again, a short video for background. 3/4

Although both crimes evolved out of war time/armed conflict, today the crimes can be committed in times of peace. Note that several of the factors that constitute crimes v. humanity can be identified as activities Russia has engage in v. Ukraine, in addition to the obvious war crimes. Intelligent questions are welcomed. 4/4

Wars are started by men and most of the victims of armed aggression are women and children. Women throughout the world are at the forefront of movements for peace. Everyone is entitled to their views on what is happening in Palestine/Israel. At a minimum however, you should know and understand what international law requires when there is an armed conflict. Yes... there are RULES for how to fight a war. Many lay people do not know that. In this short thread I'm going to post short animated videos that explain the rules, under International Humanitarian Law. 1/4
*ed: spelling

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@bageera @blackmastodon Negligence does not count in the equation of whether civilians are being targeted. You cannot target civilians or the things civilians need to sustain life because someone else attacked civilians. In IHL there aren't really good sides and bad sides. Combattants from all sides of a conflict often commit war crimes. They all should get prosecuted at the end. Whether there was negligence is a political matter to be dealt with in a political way. IHL is not political.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@bageera @blackmastodon Sure, I can't disagree with what you say. But you are looking at a broader picture. I'm just trying to help lay people understand the requirements of IHL.
