Everyone is entitled to their views on what is happening in Palestine/Israel. At a minimum however, you should know and understand what international law requires when there is an armed conflict. Yes... there are RULES for how to fight a war. Many lay people do not know that. In this short thread I'm going to post short animated videos that explain the rules, under International Humanitarian Law. 1/4
*ed: spelling

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@blackmastodon The rules of warfare can be found in the Geneva Conventions. There are 4 conventions and 2 additional pieces called protocols. A Convention is like a treaty. You can find the conventions on the website for the International Committee of the Red Cross. The first 3 minute video explains the principles of international humanitarian law and what the rules of war are. 2/4

@blackmastodon The following video which is less than 5 minutes explains the rules with examples, particularly with regard to civilians, the wounded and prisoners of war.

Last week saw Fatoumata Diawara in concert. I didn't know her work but she's Malian so I was all in. She sings but also plays electric guitar! She's a great singer though at times the show was a little TOO electric for me. Here's a clip. I'm also going to post her Tiny Desk Concert where she is actually playing the guitar. Enjoy

@ghostwise @blackmastodon Right, no visas now, but I think she lives in France for some years now, since before things got bad. I enjoyed her singing...but I'll admit I got distracted trying to keep up with the electronic stuff.

I went to a freshened. contemporary version of the musical The Wiz last night. It was fabulous - more Stephanie Mills than Diana Ross , if you understand the reference. The new Dorothy is Nichelle Lewis has a powerful voice. Saw it in Baltimore at the start of the tour. They will be in the DMV towards end of Oct and in NY in the spring, where Wayne Brady will take over as the Wiz. Catch it if you can. https://baltimorefishbowl.com/stories/ease-on-down-ease-on-down-the-drome-the-wiz-returns-home-to-baltimore-after-nearly-50-years-at-the-hippodrome/

Hope everyone in NY stays safe. Here's a little music for your Friday. This song is Allah B2y from The Nile Project musicians. I mentioned the project before. It works with musicians from all the countries impacted by the Nile river and water shortage. They tour together to educate people on the issue of water shortage. See second post for more on the project 1/2 https://youtu.be/Slf_oo4s33c?si=KRbRjr2q-V4Vvb1A

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@venitamathias @blackmastodon That's interesting. I think people also have different ideas of what "thriving" mean. If you don't know how the really rich are living, your middle class life seems like thriving...
Also in a traffic stop (where folks are most likely to be killed or injured by the police), cops don't don't know how much money you make when they stop you. They just stop you because you are black.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@venitamathias @blackmastodon Good points which highlight that you have to love at these studies with a cautious eye. In my view, comparing black lives and white lives is not an a straight apple to apple comparison. More like apple to grapefruit! Both fruits, both round, but that's about it.

Since I'm still here with you all instead of being in Morocco...I thought I would post an example of spiritual music. This is Shakawtu from Musa Dieng Kala. It's is an example of Sufi music from Senegal. It is NOT toe tapping music but meant for quiet contemplation and prayer. During the festival Sufis from all over the world sing for free at night in the medina. https://youtu.be/eWgq650ZvT4?si=bv2DqjybMn8hCsXc

Well...after 6 years of planning and saving, my trip to the Fes Festivale Musiques Sacre du Monde in Fes, Morocco was cancelled in sympathy with the earthquake victims. Was supposed to leave today 😧 . I totally get why they cancelled and my heart goes out to the Moroccan people who are suffering. But...I am sad. Hope my health stays strong so I can try again next year.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@luis_in_brief @blackmastodon Will do. The festival normally takes place in June. This year was already off schedule because of construction at the main concert site. I am hoping they will go back to the June schedule in the spring. The festival site itself wasn't impacted but because it is spiritual music, they said it didn't feel right to go forward. If I hear anything further I will post it. Was REALLY looking forward to Sufi music night...

A little late but it's still Friday, so my selection this week is from Alsarah & The Nubatones, a cut called Soukoura. Alsarah, or Sarah Mohamed Abunama-Elgadi, is a Sudanese-American singer/song writer and part of THE NILE PROJECT which uses music and song from cultures who live adjacent to the Nile River to teach about water sustainability. A friend is at the airport and they asked her to do the facial recognition thing. She declined but I think it's important for people in the US to know, neither TSA nor any airline can mandate that you submit to facial recognition technology. You have the right to refuse.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@Jackiemauro @blackmastodon Ah...the last time I refused at TSA. No one bothered me at the gate.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@Jackiemauro @blackmastodon I've also heard that when people refused the airline demanded a paper ticket rather than mobile. I haven't actually seen that, but I usually come with a paper ticket as well, and sometimes if the airport is problematic, I bring my passport.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@joevh @blackmastodon Not sure...when are you interacting with DHS? There is no federal law that allows TSA or the airlines to mandate. If people are interacting directly with DHS....well...yeah I don't know about that.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@joevh @blackmastodon So on the international flights it can get complicated. Departure from the US should not be a problem. My friend was on her way to Ecuador, but coming back can be an issue because in other countries their laws will be different, particularly if you are leaving from a surveillance state. I'll ask some of the intl people if they have a sense of how pervasive it is abroad.

I didn’t throw up a post last week because I didn’t want it to be lost among the clown show theatrics. This week’s thread is a little different but definitely on point and related. Many POCs born and raised here in the US don’t normally pay a great deal of attention to what is happening to our people in other parts of the world (my apologies if you do, I am not talking about YOU), unless we have family there. 1/8

#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #Abolition @blackmastodon
When things are bad here (OK, when are they not bad?) we can feel isolated and unsupported. But it may help you to know there are international treaties and bodies at the United Nations that specifically deal with our situation here. I mentioned one previously, CERD, when I was talking about the violent and corrupt police chief in Chicago named, John Burge. 2/8

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #Abolition @blackmastodon
CERD stands for the Convention for the Elimination All Forms of Racial Discrimination. It was the CERD review committee that demanded the US do something about Burge and the racist and violent Chicago police. That was why Burge finally got prosecuted. The UN directed the Justice Department to report back on what they were doing about him. The UN also has a treaty on discrimination. against women, CEDAW. 3/8

fulanigirl,

But the UN entity I want to bring to your attention today is the Permanent Forum on People of African Descent. It exists to hear about conditions of safety and quality of life for people of African descent. It also serves as an advisory group to the Human Rights Council. Today I attended a meeting entitled “ Rebuilding A Pan African Global Policy Agenda” sponsored by AdNA (Advocacy Network for Africa) where the first part of findings and conclusions from of Forums’ meetings were discussed. There will be two more sessions, one in October and one in November.
Many of the issues I discuss in the abolition thread were discussed as part of the Forum’s preliminary research. 5/8

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #Abolition @blackmastodon
State terror against People of African descent, lack of resources devoted to health and safety of our communities, reparations and the GLOBAL movement supporting them. You may have seen recently Guyana, and Barbados said they were due reparations. And the situation of Haiti was discussed in the context of reparations. The need for mental health services to address generational trauma was also raised. 6/8

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

#BlackMastodon #BlackTwitter #Abolition @blackmastodon
The speakers stressed that these are truly global issues caused by colonialism and predatory capitalistic systems. We are not in this fight by ourselves although it may seem so at times. Here’s the link for AdNA is you want to check out their work or learn how you can become part of a Pan African movement. https://adnaubuntu.com/ On Guyana :https://adnaubuntu.com/ 7/8

And, I’m sure you all saw the story that the colonial pineapple plantation system helped set the conditions for Hawaii’s fires. I encourage all of you to become more knowledgeable about the diasporic effort to bring dignity and justice to our people, no matter where we are located, even if it’s here. 8/8
If @blackmastodon would like me to post more international stuff, let me know.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@jhavok @blackmastodon That has nothing to do with the colonial plantation system.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@jhavok @Okanogen @blackmastodon That has nothing to do with how the pineapple plantations were set up and what the did to the land.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@Okanogen @jhavok @blackmastodon

@Okanogen Don't allow him to distract and waste your energy....we all know what he is up to. Mute or block him and let's move on.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@jhavok @Okanogen @blackmastodon At any rate...as I will say again....none of that has anything to do with the destruction to land viability and fire resistance caused by creating the pineapple plantations...which is what I mentioned.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@Okanogen @jhavok @blackmastodon If you all want to continue the back and forth between you , do it in your own thread. Do not attempt to hijack my thread.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@Okanogen @jhavok @blackmastodon It's OK.. at first I started to jump too...but that's always the plan with those kind of people...to stir trouble and get you to waste energy. But, we can pass and save our energy for issues and comments that mean something real.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@Okanogen @blackmastodon I do as well, but we have our share of colonizers here and they increase every time something stupid goes on at the bird site. It may be Mastodon but its still the internet! 😆 keep that guard mechanism close.

@IveyJanette @venitamathias @BlueintheSouth @blackmastodon
There's no question that our issues are multifaceted internally. So it's a lot...the external anti-blackness and the internal illness brought about by decades of anti-blackness. That's a lot of trauma happening. Culturally competent mental health services must be a part of reparations.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@IveyJanette @venitamathias @BlueintheSouth @blackmastodon It does. but we all can take part in breaking that cycle. Education of the issues of colorism and classism within our communities can help as can courageous dialogue with our own relatives. We don't have to allow destructive patterns established through white supremacy to continue to impact our lives. We can choose to do something different.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@Godfrey642 @thepoliticalcat @IveyJanette @venitamathias @blackmastodon
Appreciate your words.You can feel for those who are suffering. I am not traumatized because I know who I'm dealing with all the time. I did not drink the Kool-Aid from the kumbaya 60's and 70's. I am very grounded in the battle with eyes wide open. Trauma occurs when you don't know why things are happening or that you can take charge. Many POCs are traumatized and our communities are traumatized, but I move with a shield.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@paninid @IveyJanette @venitamathias @BlueintheSouth @blackmastodon
Colorism definitely exists across many cultures...and colonialism and class have much to do with it.

fulanigirl,
@fulanigirl@blacktwitter.io avatar

@venitamathias @IveyJanette @BlueintheSouth @blackmastodon While I agree that frats/sororities and Jack &Jill can have those problems, in some places in the country where folks are living in predominately white communities, the only other Black kids they can meet and know socially are in Jack & Jill. There's also a more progressive one but I can't remember its name. Black kids have to be able to see themselves as normative. Sometimes Jack & Jill serves that purpose.
