Vordus,

The past few Titan Quest DLCs were made by Pieces Interactive who are currently working on yet another Alone in the Dark remake. Titan Quest II is being made by Grimlore Games, who made the Spellforce 3 trilogy of RTS/RPG hybrids.

Not sure how much of an improvement that is, but it’s not quite the worst-case scenario. So that’s nice.

Vordus,

It’s also a holdover from arcade games, which would have an ‘attract mode’ when there was nobody playing.

Vordus,

Let us not forget that 2022 was the year of Babylon’s Fall.

Looking for games with strong female leads for my daughter (even just to watch as I play). Came across this link, but they're a bit age-inappropriate. Any suggestions from the community? (gameranx.com)

Edit: Daughter is only 5 so she’s unlikely to play much but she watches me and as long as it’s not too violent, it should be fine

Vordus,

They’re not particularly old. There’s a few games as recent as this year there. But then, can you really trust the quality of a list that includes ‘Laura’ (sic) Croft?

What platforms do you play, and how old is she? Because there’s no point in us recommending particularly grisly PS exclusives like The Last of Us Part 2 if you’re an Xbox player with a 6 year old.

Vordus,

Ah, I suspected as much immediately after posting but didn’t connect the dots in time!

Vordus,

It has some mild horror elements and I believe Maddy mentions getting drunk to deal with her problems at one point which is what gets it a higher rating than you’d expect. It’s absolutely a great game to play with her, though as it’s a brilliant game that deals with themes of self-acceptance and perseverance!

Vordus, (edited )

Spiritfarer is utterly excellent but also extremely sad (the entire game is a hospice care allegory), so if you go into that one keep in mind that at least one of you will probably be crying your eyes out at some point.

Vordus,

Ah crap, now I’m thinking of Alice the hedgehog and crying again.

Vordus,

Ooh, can second this suggestion. An utterly charming little explore-em-up.

Did anyone else dislike TOS in their youth but came around to it when they got older?

I was born in 1989, so I grew up with the TNG era and ENT, and I always dismissed TOS as a kid as the cheesy 60s original version that TNG remade and left in the dust. It wasn’t until high school that I actually sat down and watched TOS and fell in love with it. I even now wonder if Kirk is better than Picard, it’s a debate...

Vordus,

Folks tend to say that Kirk is too much of a cowboy, but that’s not really who he is. He’s very much invested in the rules and hierarchy of Starfleet, but he’s also driven by a sense of justice.

He’s not a cowboy, he’s the Sheriff.

Vordus,

So we can expect the average player to need around 3 weeks to complete Starfield, then.

What games have you played in the last 365 days that stand out to you as the most memorable experiences?

I think the most common answer is going to be Tears of the Kingdom, and that is one for me that stands out for sure, but I will try to add some more unique inputs as well. Many are games that came out longer than a year ago, but i didnt get around to playing until more recently....

Vordus,

I replayed through Hypnospace Outlaw. And hoo boy does that game hit harder when you’re playing it whilst the major social networks are crumbling.

Hideo Kojima Says Death Stranding 2 Will Redefine 'Strand' (kotaku.com)

At the beginning, there was the theme of “connecting,” and after that, I made a lot of notes about character settings, game ideas, and so on. Like how to connect it. I put it together while maintaining a balance…But I had to rewrite everything because of corona. In Death Stranding, it was justice to connect, but with the...

Vordus,

Still waiting for more Full Reactive Eyes Entertainment genre games, personally.

Vordus,

The specific wording of ‘Baldur’s Gate and Baldur’s Gate II’ corresponds to the enhanced editions.

Vordus,

Looks like you’re correct, judging by the state of the Blue Protocol reddit currently.

Vordus,

Nope. All Xbox console games backup their saves to the cloud these days. Any save files are first saved to your hard drive, then synced up to the cloud.

Vordus,

Well the good news there is that XCloud is just a console in a datacentre, sitting on a chip. The bad news, of course, is that they won’t transfer to another ecosystem, so no Deck.

Vordus,

His work with Erica Henderson on The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl was straight up one of the best runs at Marvel in the last decade, so I’m looking forward to this.

Vordus,

My suspicion since even before the crossover was announced was that they designed the characters to look like the VAs in case they had the opportunity for cameo appearances down the line.

Vordus,

Vampire Survivors has more story than vampires. Which is a low bar to clear but it just about does.

Vordus,

The gameplay loop uses getting to interact with the characters and to advance the various subplots as part of your reward/consolation at the end of each run. I’d call that story-heavy.

Vordus,

I’m not enjoying just how often it wrenches control away from you to either show you a barely animated cutscene or a flyover.

Where do you get your gaming news?

I was wondering where everyone went to get news, reviews, trailers, etc. IGN has always left a bad taste in my mouth with their seemingly bias reviews. I used to go to the gaming, games, Xbox, and a couple other smaller niche subreddits to gather the vast majority of the info. Now I’d like some advice on what others favorite...

Vordus,

I use Goodnews to read RSS feeds from Destructoid, Eurogamer, GamesIndustry, Gematsu, Nintendo Life, PC Gamer, Rock Paper Shotgun, RPG Site, The Jimquisition, VG247, and Xbox Wire.

Vordus,

This week I’ve used the Game Pass availability as an excuse to play through Grand Theft Auto V (and to be reminded of all the reasons I dropped it in the first place). I’ve also played through The Case of the Golden Idol, which is too goddamn short; I need more puzzles. I’ve only got one DLC puzzle left and I am going to take it slow and savour it. I’m also a decent way into TOEM and have started on Techtonica because, you know, Game Pass.

Vordus,

I believe all we know is that everything is open to negotiation, so some companies will take an up-front fee, some get paid per player, and some take a combination of the two. But I suspect the actual amounts involved are so vastly different as to be completely useless for analysis.

I’ve spent hundreds of hours over the last year making what might be the dumbest game of all time - I’d love if you took a look at my latest trailer :) (youtu.be)

One of my biggest struggles with game dev is just getting the steam page in front of enough eyeballs - The Algorithm really prioritizes steam wishlists. if you have a second to wishlist my game (no commitment!) it would help immensely!...

Vordus,

Well that’s certainly a shitpost and a half there.

Vordus,

Meanwhile, Minecraft trundles on as a multiplatform title 9 years after its acquisition. 🤷

Microsoft wins FTC fight to buy Activision Blizzard

https://www.theverge.com/2023/7/11/23779039/microsoft-activision-blizzard-ftc-trial-win

From the article, quoting Judge Corley:

... the Court finds the FTC has not shown a likelihood it will prevail on its claim this particular vertical merger in this specific industry may substantially lessen competition. To the contrary, the record evidence points to more consumer access to Call of Duty and other Activision content. The motion for a preliminary injunction is therefore DENIED.

@gaming

Vordus,

Crash Bandicoot, Spyro the Dragon, Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, and Overwatch to name their most active IPs. But they’ve got also a massive back catalogue that’s not even vaguely being utilised right now.

Vordus,

Not country; rock. Extremely soft rock. It’s a cover of a song originally performed by Rod Stewart. For the movie Patch Adams.

Vordus,

If so, then the interviews will stop after episode… 6 I think it was?

Vordus,

It makes slightly more sense than trying to expand Star Trek’s appeal by creating a kids show and then putting it on a subscription service that was basically only used by existing Trek fans.

Vordus,

God, this pitch makes so little sense on so many levels. Star Trek has never been about the villains, so having a batman-style villain team-up makes no sense. Seven samurai in space with time travel is a reasonable pitch, but why would you need to build a team that involves a captain, a captain, a science officer, and a captain?

Vordus,

"Oh yeah, sorry, I got the only chair. Would you like to sit on this ladder?"

Vordus,

Jesus Christ I cried my eyes out at Spiritfarer. (Also I was on the final beta test, so I’m in the credits for that one!)

Vordus,

Can confirm, Bastion is a fun little hack and slash that does a couple of very clever things narratively.

Vordus,

In 2013 I played and wrote about a different Steam game every single day for the whole year and it nearly killed me.

Why does no one make a Black and White-style game? (kbin.social)

As long as we are talking about old games that are still the gold standard, how is it possible no one has recreated the giant-god-monster and city management game Black and White yet?! That game was fantastic, and its premise so solid. It seems ripe for replication in more contemporary engines.

Vordus,

Peter Molyneux. Will Wright created SimCity and The Sims. Peter Molyneux created Black & White and Populous (and Fable, and Dungeon Keeper, and Theme Hospital, and honestly he had a really fucking good run until he disappeared up his own arse and then returned as a grifter).

Vordus,

Ah, the Hidden Garden. Yeah, that one's pretty magical. I think if there's one thing I really like about GW2 (aside from the ungodly amount of content), it's how organically it pushes folks to play together. Speaking as a serial soloer, I've spent more time playing with other folks on GW2 than in any other game, simply because you can so easily bump into folks doing map events and just get swept up in whatever's going on.

People are also just generally nice too, which is lovely.
