I noticed my consumption has decased quite a bit. I would visit regularly to watch content from few channels. I would probably still visit every so often to watch the new videos. But the experience has become more deliberate and conscious. I go to YouTube because I want to go and watch something specific. Mindlessly browsing and...
No because I haven’t used the app for years so I’m not signed in. I use browser with uBlock “etc” on both mobile & laptop/desktop.
Any feeds that I watch regularly plus interesting videos I stumble on or recommended in places like !videos i put directly into a notes app which syncs to all my devices. All grouped by length so its easy to find something depending on how little spare time I have to kill. Its a slight extra step compared to clicking “watch later” in the YouTube app but ive done it for so long now its become second nature
I am in the process of looking between repairing my phone or switching to a new one. And the no brainer evolution to the OnePlus 7 Pro I have is a Pixel phone. Pixel Phones are definitely not perfect, I know that the battery would fall faster than other phones but hey, that’s ok, google chip in it, possibility to go...
They hype 4k/8k recording capabilities but the average buyer is unlikely to realise exactly how fast this eats storage.
I had to buy a new phone when my last one broke. Needed S Pen & external SD so I opted for a used Note 20 Ultra in conjunction with the same SD card ive used since I first bought a smart phone.
I self host my own Nextcloud but cloud isnt the answer. Even in this day & age in a big city or driving, streaming is not available all the time. I insist that everything important is available offline: maps, notes, all media be it music, podcasts, audio books …even movies/TV shows seeing as these phones can easily be connected to a TV for use with Kodi or similar. Another thing is recording footage of holidays etc for editing. It all takes up space.
I’m of the opinion the external SD was only removed for profiteering reasons.
Has anyone said Minecraft? I haven’t played games myself for years (well before Minecraft) but live in a house where it was played for hours at a time. Soundtrack never became annoying & whenever I hear it it instantly takes me back in time.
Some background on me, I’m big on data privacy, I’ve stripped out a lot of services which harvest data and sell it. The last scummy bastion is Google Drive and Google Docs. I make use for G-Drive for backup redundancy and accessing things from any where, especially on my phone. Spreadsheet of my favorite horror movies, or a...
Another vote for Nextcloud which I self host but paid plans are available. I use Libre Office on PC. Docs synced to Nextcloud can then be viewed/edited on Android using Collabora
Does the end user really prefer apps over a web interfaces? Do native apps bring some security benefits? Isn’t maintaining apps for every single operating system and phone model out there more costly and time consuming than offering universally accessible web interface that works on any device? Isn’t creating apps for every...
My bank literally forces me to use their godforsaken shitty app but wherever possible I use web over app especially for corporations (eBay, Amazon, YouTube, catch up TV etc). Like you & others said, reduces exposure to data harvesting
Can’t remember the last time I installed anything from Play store. Every app comes from Github/FDroid/XDA etc & updates through Obtainium. I dont use any Google service & this sounds like get another garbage decision from Google
MiXplorer. If you don’t already use it theres a bit of a learning curve but I just ran a quick test & it found a file 6 directories deep in /android/data/… with no problems at all
Don’t get me wrong. Apple removing audio jack was the biggest facepalm in smartphone history. And you can thank it for not being able to make an upgrade without sacrificing audio jack (and SD card too :/). But USB-C is getting standardized everywhere now (laptops, smartphones, etc.). What makes USB-C earphones not worth the...
I cant sleep without listening to podcasts & i charge the phone at night so this is one of the reasons why i was reluctant to upgrade my old phone.
When I inevitably had to upgrade I bought a USB C headphone/charging dongle for about €15. All good, I’d been worrying about nothing …Until it broke within a few months so I had to go without podcasts for a few nights whilst I waited for the replacements to arrive (might as well be prepared & buy a spare right?). Guess what? The first replacement lasted a only few months again. So far, a lack of headphone jack has cost me an extra €45 inside of about 6 months. Absolutely ridiculous

I used Reddit for mindless nonsense but mostly for finding answers in niche topics. As good as Lemmy seems so far it will take a long time for the user count to be suffient enough to fill the information void. I’ll bet our time spent here will increase as user volumes increase
Some years back there was a password manager which stopped sync through cloud (probably Dropbox) & insisted it went through their own servers instead. The whiff of subscription service was in the air so I switched Keepass.
I sync Keepass between devices myself but I recommend Bitwarden to family who probably couldn’t figure out how to set sync up with Keepass if I’m not around. I stick with Keepass as I like the key file aspect & because it allows multiple documents to be added to entries (restricted on Bitwarden). The documents are available offline, such as vehicle breakdown documents etc. Could be very useful one day!
Great machines, I use an NUC8i7 as our HTPC. Supports 4K 60fps. Got it hooked up to a Denon amp for Dolby Atmos. At some point i hope I’ll find time to look into Home Assistant, I’d use another NUC for running that.
I used to downvote fairly often on Reddit as a sign to disagree or to push down really disgusting bigoted comments. And to be honest, it became a habit to just downvote without replying. However, now that I’m on lemmy and not Reddit I’ve been actively trying to not instantly downvote things and instead move on or take the...
I’ve literally never upvoted/downvoted anything on Reddit or here, never understood the point of either. I read the thread & either engage or scroll on
When looking at a post in wefwef it shows upvote downvote and then a symbol like a flag (the save icon I assume) but I click it and nothing happens. Is there a way to save a post?
To someone who is subscribed to multiple communities on Reddit, has there been any change in their feed in their quality or amount of posts since July 1st? Any change in the amount of comments in the posts? Even the number of community subscribers?...
I check in occasionally to see if my 3rd party is still working (strangely it is). Checked a few of the subs I use & some are still dark. A poster on Worldnews this morning was complaining about the lack of posts in the Ukraine thread, though sadly thats likely a combination of 4th July in the US plus the current Elon clownshow on Twitter rather than due to the blackouts

I’ve seen people say “Sorting by Hot is the problem, sort by Active instead,” and I’ve also seen just as many say the exact opposite. I’m still undecided.
has your YouTube consumption decreased after implementing the "no history, no recommendations" feature?
