What does Autistic Masking/Camoflaging mean to YOU?

Not what the definition is. Not what people on social media say. We say that all humans are different. Masking fits into that too.

Some of us can’t mask btw.

What is it to YOU?

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Before I ever heard the term "masking" I referred to it as a persona, one I put on when in particular environments. And that's still what it is for me - a persona, not me. Something I pretend to be so I can pass more smoothly through that environment. It's work, simple as that.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic A couple of years ago during one of the lockdowns. I attended a webinar about neurodiversity at an online tech conference & something clicked, prompting me to look further. And then I just fell straight down the rabbit hole of research, mainly autistic lived experience. Not formally diagnosed & suspect I might never opt to, but knowing there's nothing inherently wrong with me is a massive positive after nearly 4 decades.

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Good overall, but I kind of wish I had known about it when I needed it more if that makes sense. Like maybe 25 years earlier.

@RuthFlaherty @edutooters I'd say yes but I also think vampires can enter public buildings without needing an explicit invitation because right of access is implied.

@RuthFlaherty @edutooters This also feels a lot like the logic of magical compulsion stuff from Charles Stross's last New Management novel. 😊

ETA: 🤦‍♀️ Just realised his boost is the reason I'm seeing this in my timeline. D'oh!

@RuthFlaherty @edutooters An equally interesting question is, in the event that the answer to this question is yes, if there was an issue whereby the warrant wasn't valid but the vampire policeman believed it was, what would happen then? Would we have a Let The Right One In-style event if the policeman stepped inside?

@RuthFlaherty @edutooters So I guess it depends on what drives the compulsion in vampires. I think it's social, rather than say linguistic, in terms of the invitation. You own your home but ownership only exists as a concept in the context of participation in society, therefore a higher social power explicitly compelling access would trump your right to deny it (or at least not grant it).

@RuthFlaherty @edutooters Dammit, now I'm wondering if the homeowner still being in the process of paying off their mortgage would allow an executive at their bank to grant access. 🤦‍♀️ My brain is a mess.

@thoughtpunks @RuthFlaherty @edutooters Oh, interesting! I wonder would leaving your door unlocked in the present day have the same effect? Bearing in mind that you're effectively inviting a burglary in the eyes of the majority of society by doing that. 🤔

@JeremyMallin @actuallyautistic Dunno if I just misinterpreted the phrase but I always considered "read the room" in terms of a specific instance where the person is being made aware that they have said/done something totally at odds with the general vibe of the group, usually in a hurtful way even if not necessarily meaning it.
But as a general instruction, like "maintain an understanding of what's happening with the people around you"? Yeah, that's going to be hit or miss for me tbh. 🤷‍♀️

@theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Not sure it's a rule per se, but I took way too long to learn that "maybe some other time" / "we'll get back to you" / "we'll have to do this again sometime" usually don't mean those any of those things. Except the odd times when they do, which is confusing as all hell. 🤷‍♀️

@devxvda @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Or "grand" if you're Irish, which can mean anything from genuinely fine to "my leg spontaneously fell off & my wife's just left me 😭"

@devxvda @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic "A bit poorly" = possibly dead.

@DziadekMick @devxvda @theautisticcoach @actuallyautistic Yeah, it's essentially a non-answer to a non-question.
