@actuallyautistic
Is there any research about autism and efficiency of local anaesthesia drugs?

I did a fast search, but everything was flooded with pros and cons about using full anaesthesia or with stupid stuff like does anaesthesia cause autism.

I am asking because some years ago under surgery with local anaesthesia I felt more than I should or doctors could believe. So since nearly all my specialities so far was mirrored by autistic people, I wonder if that could be a thing too.

@ahrimans_erbe @actuallyautistic There is a high correlation between hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome and autism spectrum disorder. @ohtwist has information on local anesthetics and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome. Those of us with Ehlers-Danlos need alternative local anesthetics for pain relief.

Whenever I get one of those random cringe memories, now I tell my brain, “that never happened.”

Sometimes I mix it up and treat it like I’m editing it out of the current story revision. Sometimes I mentally add in a clip of cute baby animals to balance things back out.

It’s surprisingly effective. I can’t believe that something I learned from trolls on Twitter is so useful.

New Blog Post! How to Meditate When You Can’t Sit Still: Neurodivergent Meditation Hacks for Autistic & ADHD Folks

**"**Meditation seems to inspire a love it or hate it reaction. When I talk to people about meditation, I tend to get one of two responses. The first is “I liked it once I got the hang of it”. The second is “I can’t meditate”.

...

Did you know that there are actually lots of different ways to meditate? There isn’t a right or wrong way to do it, in my opinion. It’s about finding what works for you, and that can be different on different days or in different phases of life. This blog post explores some of the many options, which I hope gives you some useful ideas to try."

@rekindled @actuallyautistic Thank you for this. I took Jon Kabat-Zinn’s Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction course a few years ago and it was helpful, but can no longer seem to access the benefits I used to get. Now I just feel agitated when I try. I’ll give some of your suggestions a try.

Autistic people often don't have great experiences with doctors. I suspect that in part it's because of doctors failing to humanise their patients.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy Since becoming seriously chronically ill 4 years ago, my inability to work well with doctors has become a BIG issue. I had no idea that I had trouble communicating effectively with them prior to this. I suspect it’s a combination of having a post-viral illness and having autism, but since I now need regular medical care, it sure is inconvenient to have this become such a large problem.

@DivergentDumpsterPhoenix @actuallyautistic @autisticadvocacy Exactly. I’m in my 50s now and have been sick for four years. I’m actively working on my screening skills to try to expose myself to fewer doctors who are unable or unwilling to be helpful.

@disability Requesting help understanding wheelchairs and insurance in the U.S.

I am primarily housebound due to MECFS, hEDS, and POTS. I am able to get around my home using a manual without the footrests, propelling myself with my feet. I recently received a power wheelchair, paid for by my insurance, because my health conditions are energy-limiting and degenerative. 1/

ImmedicableME,
@ImmedicableME@mastodon.online avatar

@disability They did not provide me with a ramp or a wheelchair van, of course, so I’m currently unable to use the power chair outside of the house. I have a cheap, folding manual wheelchair that is sagging and is causing me pain, but it’s necessary because I have to use it when my caregiver takes me to appointments. I now have a different insurance provider and requested a new manual . The durable medical equipment company says I can’t have a new manual wheelchair. 2/

ImmedicableME,
@ImmedicableME@mastodon.online avatar

@disability The reason for this is that the power chair is my on record and I can’t have a chair that is prescribed for someone with a lower level of than my power wheelchair indicates. Is my only option to purchase a manual wheelchair out of pocket? The medical equipment place said that I can’t even get a custom manual wheelchair, even if I pay out of pocket, because of the power chair being the wheelchair on record. 3/

ImmedicableME,
@ImmedicableME@mastodon.online avatar

@disability I’m not able to wheel myself with my arms. I require a caregiver to push my wheelchair if we leave the house. I just want a manual wheelchair that will fit in the car and can be used at appointments and to use with my feet within the house. Is self-pay the only way to do this? And is it true that I can’t get a manual that’s sized to fit me even if I pay for it? Thank you for any insight. /4
