Students at dozens of Houston ISD schools will return in a few weeks without librarians and to former libraries that have been converted into disciplinary spaces.
Most of the legitimate "block sunlight" proposals involve cloud seeding or spreading long-lasting particulates high in the upper atmosphere. The goal of these projects is to reflect 1-2% of sunlight, which would significantly cool the climate, but plants would hardly notice. In fact, organisms like reef systems would greatly appreciate it, as they're dying off at an extraordinary rate.
I'm not playing defense for anyone. I'm recognizing that deconstructing the corporate money-making machine will take longer than we have to fix the more immediate problem of killing off our biosphere, so working with the system, broken as it is, may be the only way forward.
Believe it or not, it's a laudable goal. Cow feces is responsible for about 40% (yes, really) of methane production worldwide, and methane is several times more impactful as a greenhouse gas than carbon dioxide. I called bullshit (heh) the first time I heard these stats, too, but they're real.
I’ve been looking through some US and EU labor data and I have started to wonder why don’t more of the working poor join local mutual aid groups instead of staying at their likely shitty jobs or relying on charities?...
I mean, if we're going to keep pretending that dancing around and slugging each other is a "sport," then it makes sense to have children play it, right?
Sicily - which has already been brought to its knees by a prolonged heatwave - is battling wildfires that are threatening towns and cities across the island.
Considering how easy it is to set up a screen reader or to set an overriding font on most browsers, this seems like an exercise in futility. That said, something like mssystem ought to do it -- standardized, block-style typeface, with little to differentiate the individual letters.

If I had to guess, I'd say they're trying to maximize their market cap. It's no secret that they're looking for a buyer and/or eyeing and IPO. The more profitable they can seem before that, the more money Huffman can walk away with.
A U.S. Air Force general said Thursday the Pentagon's artificial intelligence ethics are better than adversaries' because "our society is a Judeo-Christian society."
I expect that election shenanigans are precisely what this is all about. We've got a serious bootlicker problem down here, and a move like this is likely to earn more votes.
I've been informed numerous times by legal counsel that any legal threat which doesn't come via certified mail can be ignored. I am not a lawyer; this does not constitute legal advice in any way.
I had 130K+ karma, and after my eighth "permaban," I decided to stop fighting it. I pissed off a couple of power mods, and they began abusing the report function. Calling them out by name got me "unbanned" every single time, but I'm done at this point.... Reddit is dying, and I don't care.
It was a certain turtle, so it wasn't hard to figure out. And yeah, I'm on eight at this point. Even if I was interested in fighting the good fight again, with the way things are going over there, he'll be back in power in no time. I'm done with that nonsense; I'll go back to Fark if I have to.
She has zero ethical hangups about mobilizing her fans to shout-down and destroy anyone she has an issue with. Her behavior on Reddit was abhorrent, and we don't need her here.
First thing I did when I signed up for Reddit back in the day was to turn off DMs. I refuse to believe she's too stupid to figure that out. She wants to be the victim, and frames every conversation she has in that light.
Well, I couldn't speak to what she's gotten in DMs, but she shut me down and got all pissy when I was agreeing with her, so I can only imagine that at least half of what's said about her publicly is true. This is the same name I used on Reddit, so you're welcome to look at the history -- I even pinned a post with all the vitriol she sent me -- though you'll probably have to use the wayback machine, since Reddit permabanned me for the eighth time.
Edit: And, to be fair, she edits her posts and threads religiously. As you'll see if you find the post I'm talking about, I had to publish screenshots of her toxicity because she edited threads down to portray a completely different narrative.
Oh, I agree... you shouldn't have to, but we all know that DMs are used only for harassment, so.... yeah, if you don't, then you're asking for it. I wish people were better, well, people, but we aren't.
As far as the post goes, I can't find it because of Reddit -- when they "permaban" you, you can't even search your own profile. I could probably dig up the screenshots and re-up them, but I'm honestly too lazy and not nearly invested enough in this situation.
Yes, I'm vindictive. I return the downvote favor when I see somebody else doing it. If this bothers you, you should try not starting shit to begin with.
As for the shit with Pizzacake, I again highly recommend you engage her yourself and see how things go. Nothing like experiencing it first-hand IMO.
Edit: And just so I don't have to experience your stream-of-consciousness bullshit anymore, consider yourself blocked. Bye.
i’m doing it because I want to make the fediverse more friendly place, in hopes of making it more welcoming for new users, and the nicer place in general. But I wonder how much is just less bots.
Well, it depends on your instance. Some of them aren't popular, and some of them don't allow downvotes at all. But, over here, it's apparently hip to just click into a profile and downvote everything they've posted because they said something you disagree with. I won't name names, because that'd be just as bad, but you can look through my profile if you're really interested.
What does blocking on kbin actually do? I’m asking because it seems incomplete, to put it mildly. At this point, I'm just amused that you went on a screed about downvotes after doing it yourself -- that it bugs you this much when it accomplishes nothing is kinda funny. Downvotes don't impact your account in any way; it's just there for looks.
Ah, we finally got to the point of "anyone who disagrees with me is a troll." Took longer than I thought. This thread is becoming a great way to populate my blocklist.
That'd be my suggestion. I can't imagine that the average airport security goon is going to check the reported size of the drive against the hardware specs as part of a normal inspection.
