GissaMittJobb, to canada in Millionaire builds 99 tiny homes to help his community

Larger homes cost more to build for obvious reasons, so with any given amount of money, you have to balance the amount of individual units you can build with the size of the units.

Which is to say that you can provide homes for more people if you make them tiny and not regular

GissaMittJobb, to memes in At least uBlock Origin is always up-to-date now

It hasn’t really mattered enough for them to spend any engineering time on it before. Zero interest rates are over, though, and money actually kind of means something now. This is just the first move in a chain of many.

A warning for anyone relying on stuff like adblockers for YouTube - it’s not that hard for Google to figure out that we’re doing it, simply query for which users have zero ad impressions. Google also has a certain tendency to permaban Google accounts in violation of their policies and then ignoring all appeals. If you rely on Google accounts for email, photos and the like, this might be the time to plan contingencies.

Personally I’ve started using Piped instead. The lack of recommendations is a bit of a bummer, but in all honesty it was kind of like the switch from Reddit to Lemmy - just had to wean myself off the digital sugar pills.

GissaMittJobb, to asklemmy in hey - trying to switch from Chrome to Firefox, what are your recommended extensions and/or quality of life addins, etc?

RES shouldn’t really be needed for Lemmy - it’s better to just directly upstream the changes, since it’s open source.

Stop trying to larp being an advocate for people with disabilities, it’s pathetic and extremely disingenuous. If you actually were an advocate you’d know there are plenty of disabilities that disqualify people from driving and a lack of alternatives is the actual discrimination.

Seriously, you make me so fucking mad with this shit, it’s the worst category of cowardice. Leave and don’t come back.

A few ideas, which may or may not work out for any given situation:

  • Bike with panniers/baskets/trailer or a fully fledged cargo bike - these can pack a surprising amount of stuff
  • Order your groceries delivered
  • Skip buying in bulk - it’s not necessary in a context where the nearest grocery store is within walking distance.

For reference, I live in a country with decently well designed urban environments, and my nearest grocery store is less than 200m away by foot. I could just do all of my shopping there, but it’s a bit more expensive, so I bike to a cheaper store that is 3.5km away, taking me less than 10 minutes. There I fill up a basket and maybe a pannier, which gets us enough groceries to last for a week or so.

If I need to transport anything larger, I primarily look to have it delivered, or as a last resort, I rent a car. Renting a car is almost never necessary, though.

GissaMittJobb, to memes in Add-on: same password, same identity.

I mean, just three days ago we had this incident, which is probably what they are referring to: blog.1password.com/okta-incident/

Anyway, iirc, 1password is architected in a way where a breach won’t actually disclose the passwords of their users, but I’m too tired to do the requisite double-checking to verify it

Just use a password manager, then you get the benefits of having a single password to remember without the security-related downsides.

…how?

GissaMittJobb, to asklemmy in Tech workers - what did your IT Security team do that made your life hell and had no practical benefit?

Access to change production systems was limited to a single team, which was tasked with doing all deploys by hand, for an engineering organisation of 50+ people. Quickly becoming overloaded, they limited deploy frequency to five deploys per day, organisation-wide.

Bit of a shit-show, that one.

GissaMittJobb, to nostupidquestions in Does anyone drink instant coffee anymore?

I like drinking really good coffee as much as I can, but I do not look down on a cup of instant from time to time. I have a jar at home for if I run out, and it’s often the only option while traveling.

Coffee is coffee, and I like coffee.

GissaMittJobb, to gaming in Weekly “What are you playing” Thread || Week of October 22nd

I’ve been continuing my streak of playing Spelunky 2. A true masterpiece of a roguelike platformer.

I just got the last achievement, and now I’m considering whether I should try to push for a full cosmic clear. That’s next-level hard, though.
