Hello guys, I need to take a break from Lemmy. Lately, I’ve become attached to it, a part of the community (which is probably good). Unfortunately, it triggers fear of missing out (FOMO) lately for me. Don’t get me wrong, Lemmy has become the most wonderful community on the Internet, but this time, I need a break from the...
While you’re off, if you like classic literature, I can recommend Henry David Thoreau’s “Walden” to get more in touch with yourself, nature, and the world around you.
Few even mentioned his name, and the new federal indictment he faces was completely ignored, as Republican candidates for president tried in Iowa Sunday to present themselves as Donald Trump alternatives.
“Barbie” has answered the billion-dollar question with a resounding “yes.” Barely three weeks into its run, writer-director Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster has raked in an astounding $1.03 billion at the global box office, according to official Warner Bros. estimates. This makes Gerwig the first solo female director with a...

Anyone else have trouble with these GE dishwashing machines?
Mine cleans dishes well enough, but the gaskets leak easier than any other dishwasher I've ever had. I replaced the gaskets a few months ago, but if a little bit of debris builds up then it's leaking again. Also, the racks are badly corroded, but the machine is only maybe five years old. Anyway, it's just kind of funny that my aunt is coming over tomorrow and the last time she was here she noticed the dishwasher was leaking.
The US, like most other developed countries, needs a constant influx of workers because the population is getting older on average. Boomers will soon be completely out of the labor market, and the smaller, younger generations will not be able to sustain the economy and society without extra hands.
And it’s mind boggling to me that there are so many great solutions that have been in use for decades in other developed countries, but the US refuses to take any cues, because that’s “socialism” or whatever. It’s tiresome.
Also, how about electric vehicle charging? Do these attendants have to plug the car in for you? Just a matter of time before gasoline cars are obsolete.

Senator Josh Hawley from Missouri has openly acknowledged that the GOP strategy is to make it so miserable for Democrats in red and purple states that they will move to blue states. That would, in turn, cement Republican power in the White House, Senate and thereby the Supreme Court.
US mortgage rates jumped this week, climbing closer to 7%. The move follows last week’s rate hike from the Federal Reserve, and the downgrade this week by Fitch Ratings agency of US sovereign debt, and of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae.

I don’t mind supporting the developer. He can’t rely on tens of thousands of user to buy the app for $1 each on lemmy like he could on reddit. It’s going to be more expensive per user here.
I haven’t shopped for a new phone for a while but I have to admit I’m eyeing the new foldables from an accessibility standpoint. I really miss the mechanical keyboards that used to be available on every phone. In the absence of that, I’d love to have the option of a full-screen keyboard on one side and still being able to...
For some reason, Samsung is also behind competitor, like Oppo, on making the crease disappear. It’s still very noticable on the Flip 5 and Fold 5. I’ll hold off to see how that plays out.
I hear you. It’s definitely hard for a lot of white people to understand our responsibility for reconciliation after so many years of brutality. But that doesn’t mean the responsibility doesn’t exist.
Germany is still working through its responsibilities for WWII and the holocaust even though few current Germans lived through that.
Democrat is a noun. Democratic is an adjective. You can say “vote for a Democrat,” but you can’t say “vote Democrat” because you’re referring to the Democratic Party where “Democratic” is the adjective. In that case, it would be “vote Democratic.”
Republicans love to use slurs like “the Democrat Party.” That’s probably where you’ve heard it.
Not trying to be better than anyone, and I do agree that it may not be the biggest of deals. But I’m a native speaker, and I’m just pointing out the grammar part and making people aware that it’s a Republican epithet.
People just make up their own truth and say that you’re the one in need of “truth.” It’s a product of the “alternative facts” era that mainly Trump ushered in and others have picked up. If your facts do no support the preferred agenda, it’s just dismissed as “fake news.” Easy-peacy.
Not to this extent in any way. It has been infinitely exacerbated with the dawn of social media. Those who seek to divide have the tools to do so. And we’ve seen since 2016 what it leads to when people are being continually lied to and they believe it because the lies fit into their own belief system. Trump is not a master at much, but he’s a master at that.
I gave Lemmy a shot after the API debacle on reddit. First week was bumpy with lots of timeouts and servers that weren’t able to handle all the new users from reddit.
It quickly improved. So much so that I went ahead and deleted my reddit account.
I’d also expect another big jump when clients like Sync and Boost get their apps for Lemmy online. That will attract an enormous amount of users from reddit.
