Real talk, Lemmy needs some of the basic ass moderation tools that Reddit had so mods can be alerted and so mods can recommend that an admin ban an account or domain.

Sure, there are ways that we can scan uploads with AI and do a bunch of other complex magic, but we need the basics first.

Been running it for a few months now. I like it, but it’s been slightly harder on my S7’s battery, and I’m still struggling to adapt to the UI changes.

Several years of muscle memory is tough for me to break. After 2 months I’m swiping up to get to the control center, then saying “damn it,” because my stupid brain hasn’t learned yet.

Why the weird arbitrary time?

Which was tough to achieve before 1990, but Harold Styles of Sioux Falls South Dakota pulled it off.

The sequel to The Social Network had better have Kathy Bates wrestling Jesse Eisenberg in a backyard octagon, smothered in Sweet Baby Rays BBQ sauce.

Voyager is basically a clone of Apollo, with support for both Android’s and iOS’s UI styles. Apollo was one of the best Reddit experiences, and it often won awards every year. Also, Voyager is pretty damn polished, it’s super reliable, and it has one of the most complete Lemmy feature sets.

If you’re an Android user who has never used Apollo, it’s worth a look to see what all the hype was about. If you’re on iOS and miss Apollo, Voyager is kind of a no brainer.

Only problem is that the app and play store builds still don’t have push notifications implemented. Also no mod tools quite yet.

I wish the Apollo dev would’ve ported his app and migrated his user base. IMHO, Syncs popularity shows that the developer was able to migrate a lot of their old user base to Lemmy.

Rural hospital maternity wards closing as people seek to give birth closer to home (abcnews.go.com)

A growing number of rural hospitals have been shuttering their labor and delivery units, forcing pregnant women to travel longer distances for care or face giving birth in an emergency room. Fewer than half of rural hospitals now have maternity units, prompting government officials and families to scramble for answers. One...

What a piece of shit headline:

The main reasons for closures are decreasing numbers of births; staffing issues; low reimbursement from Medicaid, the federal-state health insurance program for low-income people; and financial distress, said Peiyin Hung, deputy director of the University of South Carolina’s Rural and Minority Health Research Center and co-author of research based on a survey of hospitals.

Is there a way to convert radiation from atomic decay into energy directly, the same way we do sunlight with a solar cell? (lemmy.dbzer0.com)

Couldn’t we have a lead box lined with these radiation to electricity converters with a small amount of radioactive material in the center, and have an energy generating device that would last for thousands or even millions of years? Imagine putting the sun in a box lined with solar cells, but on a much smaller scale....

What specifically is she apologizing for?

Blowing a giant vape cloud in on someone’s head, smoking in front of a pregnant woman, jacking off a guy in public, dancing in a theater where everyone is sitting, flipping off the ushers, or lying about all of that stuff because she thought it wasn’t on camera?

Ghostalmedia,

That’s the story of her political career. Being wanted about her behavior, and not changing it.

Depends on where you live. A lot of CVS and Walgreens are pretty flush with the new stuff in the California Bay Area.

My wife and I both got the new boosters from CVS today. Scheduled an appointment on Thursday night at 10pm, got shots at 3pm the next day.

Looks like inventory is just starting to roll in. Some places have it, and some don’t.

Got my shot today. Scheduled a CVS appointment last night.

In my area a lot of CVS and Walgreens pharmacies are rolling with inventory from both Pfizer and Moderna.

Ghostalmedia,

Your wife’s experience sucks, but having done IT for sizable orgs in the past, my experience was that OS X and Apple’s hardware usually needed less coddling than the various Windows machines. Although they did have some lemon OS releases here and there, and those fucking keyboards from several years back were the devil.

Any OS is going to have anecdotal horror stories. If you want to get a real read on reliability you really need more than a sample size of 1. You need scale.

Ghostalmedia,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I’ll take my experience out of the picture. If you google Mac and PC enterprise costs, or total cost of ownership, you can find a ton of enterprise studies on this.

Usually the big problem with MacOS is whether it supports the damn software the organization / department needs. And by support, I mean native, not through a janky emulator.

TCO, has been compelling for decades. Folks often report longer lasting workstations, fewer tickets, and less malware. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Seems like Apple is very much setting themselves up to compete against MS, Sony, and Nintendo for couch gaming.

Ghostalmedia,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

I’m more curious about the fact that all the phones quietly added support for 4K 60 DisplayPort to the USB C port.

DisplayPort, plus the new game porting tools, plus hardware ray tracing and all of the console games ported to iOS - Apple appears to be getting ready to compete in the console gaming space.

Ghostalmedia,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

The recent Resident Evils, Death Stranding, the upcoming Assassin’s Creed, etc. The iPhones are basically powerful enough to play current gen console titles at 4K with raytracing.

The assumption is that a lot of other AAA publishers will join in because the platform’s installed base makes console install bases look quaint.

I don’t see anyone in the Apple forums defending the lack of offline maps. The reaction is more along the lines of “fucking finally.”

People use Apple Maps for the Siri integration and or if they find the maps less cluttered. For long trips in dead zones, Google was always king.

USB IO speed aside, Apple’s phones have gotten to the point where 3 and 4 year old chipsets are still VERY performant. They now have the wiggle room to put more bleeding edge silicon in top tier phones, be ok with smaller yields at first, and scale fabrication over the year.

That all being said, given that everyone was going to been eyeing this USB port, they probably should’ve taken one on the chin and changed the stupid IO speed. Although, the people complaining about this probably aren’t Apple’s core market anyway. So maybe they were right.

Ghostalmedia,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Apple’s base model hardware usually uses last year’s pro chipsets. They’ve been doing this for a bit now.

If the trend continues, next year the base model will get all the newer CPUs, micro controllers, etc.

Ghostalmedia,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

Just saying that I wouldn’t be surprised if they were reusing some boards or controllers with limited throughput that their manufacturing plants and fabs were already pumping out. Cook got famous for being an operational efficiency nerd that made sure Apple had very little spare parts and inventory on the books.

But yeah, iPhone physical IO speeds have been slow for a looong time. My guess is that so much of Apple’s install base is syncing over the cloud that it hasn’t been a priority.

The biggest applause at the in-person event was, no lie, for the larger cloud storage plans.

Ghostalmedia,

You’re right. Good catch.

Ghostalmedia,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

lol. That’s article is full of ancient discontinued phones.

Ghostalmedia,

Thing is, very few people bought the small phone. The community that wants them is very vocal, but they don’t show up in big numbers at the cash register.

Ghostalmedia,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

They also couldn’t fit the pro cameras. If you wanted a small phone, you had to accept shit battery and base model cameras.

Ghostalmedia,
@Ghostalmedia@lemmy.world avatar

The devices are still locked. It’s fine.
