There was another thread where people were calling for McCarthyist treatment of the legislators that refuse to vote for more war money to Ukraine.

There’s been a ton of doxxing in the US over valid criticism of Israel, including advertising trucks with students’ names, photos, and info driven around college campuses.

It may be that people just need to simmer down a little. I still remember when Spike Lee tweeted the name and address of the wrong George Zimmerman and forced an innocent old couple into hiding.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

That’s awesome!

The only two homebrew creatures I have are El Pollo Diablo (for an April Fools session) and the Turkeybear, for my Thanksgiving session.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I’d like to think that. Honestly I would.

Every indication we’ve seen so far is that they’ll vote Democrat and Republican, and the two major parties have exactly the same position with regard to our relations with Israel.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I hope you’re right, but I can’t help but be pessimistic about this.

The old may die, but the wealthy will still be in charge, and as we’ve seen with so many issues, like universal background checks or free insulin and birth control, the wealthy have more than enough power to silence the majority, and we enthusiastically vote for it every two years.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

“Settler Violence” is way too sanitized a term for my taste.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I visited The Met recently, and I’m reasonably sure Washington Crossing the Delaware originated in the US.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Oh, wow.

I was not aware of that, but appreciate the info. If you ever see the real thing it has the most grotesque, masturbatory Trumpist American gilded frame.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, when I was standing in front of it it occurred to me that this was one of the most vulgarly nationalistic things I’ve ever seen.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Same.

Hated having to throw out a basically new printer, but it’s better than encouraging this bullshit.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I guarantee you every member of Congress used their classified briefings on Israel to make changes in their stock portfolio, and it’s not even illegal.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Finally an accurate headline.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Protest only works if there’s a credible threat of violence.

And even then, like we saw with the calls to defund the police, it only really works in the short-term.

The people are mostly powerless.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Seems to me that it’s 99% of American voters who are useful idiots.

The minimum wage hasn’t increased in 15 years and you all are still voting Democrat or Republican and actively support a trillion and half of your taxpayer dollars going overseas to war. Idiotic is a very good word to describe people who convince themselves it’s a good thing to vote against their own interests every two years.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

It’s not democrats fault when voters refuse to give them control over both congress and the white house at the same time.

They just had control of the white house and Congress.

What did we get for it? Another half trillion in war spending.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I, and many, many others do not support this and actively oppose it

And yet you vote for it anyway.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

They have the presidency.

They could veto everything until they get what they want.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

That’s not really how it works.

You’re right.

It’s infinitely better that they simply pretend to be powerless rather than using the power we gave them to create meaningful change. It’s too bad people can’t eat excuses.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

While it remains, voting for a minor party is a wasted vote.

If you’re a wage earner, need an education, health care, an abortion, or working infrastructure… your vote’s wasted almost everywhere in this country.

That’s the two party system.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

No it isn’t.

All of these issues will remain the same no matter who you vote for.

The Democrats have had the White House and Congress twice in the last sixteen years, and even had a supermajority for part of Obama’s presidency.

All we (and by ‘we’ I mean the poor and middle class) got for it was more expensive health care and higher war spending. We didn’t get a minimum wage increase. Health care and education are now cost-prohibitive for tens of millions, and infrastructure in most areas of the country is declining. For an added kick in the junk, Roe was repealed when Democrats had the majority and the White House and they did nothing about it.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

In another year we’re going to reelect Trump, sadly.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

No, we won’t.

History has proven out that no one cares what your political ideology is if you’re the candidate of change in a time of poverty, and thanks to Biden’s inaction, the massive increase in cost of living nationwide is going to sink his reelection prospects.

The Republicans are not going to have to lie about how little he’s done to help the poor and middle class.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

It’s just a feeling you have. The average American is actually better off than ever.

The average American, no matter where they live, is dealing with a 30% to 50% cost of living increase over the last couple of years, when Biden’s been in office.

That’s going to be hard to sell in a reelection campaign.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

You could be right, but I wouldn’t want to have to sell Biden’s record to people who are paying more than double for groceries since he got elected. Wages, where they’ve increased, haven’t kept up with cost of living, and that’s going to be a big deal in the election.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I think the best way to find people you truly connect with is to pursue your interests.

I like sports and unconventional, strange people, so for the last decade I’ve been part of the roller derby and theatre communities in my city.

That said, any time you open up to anyone you’re risking heartbreak. That is always going to be the case. It’s up to you to decide if it’s worth the risk in the end. I say that as someone who’s more than happy alone.

YouTube once again ahead of uBO on Firefox; fiddling with the extension settings not working this time and DDG search is useless ... anyone got ideas?

Pretty much the subject line. uBO has successfully blocked the nag screen enough times that I can’t play anything at this point. No preview loads, and the play button serves no function. I’d really prefer not to have to find content on YT, copy the URL and use Piped/Invidious, but this ongoing escalation is steeling my...

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Use Brave Browser instead. I haven’t had any issues at all watching YT using Brave.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Pretty much every CEO of every company is right wing. Several prominent Democrats are right-wing in their politics, and will still get the backing of the party regardless. That’s what happens when all you elect are capitalists.

I do not care about shitcoins either way.

I’ve never heard of Vivaldi. Does the adblock work?

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

It’s true.

That’s why I scratch my head a little whenever someone tells me I can’t use a certain product. For instance, it’s impossible for me to use a computer that, at some level, hasn’t been sourced from an oppressed labor force.

The society I live in is impossible to exist in if I abstain from everything I need due to negative political connotations.

I do what I can to effect better outcomes in my own small sphere, but asking someone to forego any problematic associations in their consumption is like asking someone not to breathe.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

The US only cares about human rights and war crimes when they can be exploited to take over a nation’s resources.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

No, it won’t. That is how change has been sold for the last 40 years, and people are not only being paid significantly less, housing is quickly becoming too scarce for everyone to obtain too.

If meaningful change happens, it will because people revolted.

FlashMobOfOne, (edited )
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Pressure must be applied from many sources for real change to occur.

Yet without a real, existential threat, nothing meaningful is going to change. Hell, we just saw Roe go up in smoke while Democrats had the presidency AND Congress. Their response to this massive loss of liberty was to fundraise.

Nothing is going to change this trajectory except the Marsha P. Johnson school of brick throwing.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

To be fair: Democrats also did absolutely nothing to get their SCOTUS nominee confirmed when Obama was president, though since we saw them exploit the Roe leak to make a cool $80,000,000, we kinda know where their priorities were anyway.

After four years of Trump, I’m not buying any excuses that the president is powerless.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I think it’s inevitable.

The bad actors stealing data to train their apps don’t seem to have an adequate understanding of the implications of their actions. They’re just looking to make a quick buck and run.

Bring on the lawsuits.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Yeah, but siding with Israel here is the logical equivalent of siding with Andrew Jackson and supporting the Indian Removal Act as he committed genocide against the native people.

The power imbalance and how Israel has used it is what makes it imperative that Israel be held accountable by the international community.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Also I’ve had zero problems with Youtube ad blocking using Brave browser.

Gaza: 3,195 children killed in three weeks surpasses annual number of children killed in conflict zones since 2019, Save the Children International says (web.archive.org)

Children make up more than 40% of the 7,703 people killed in Gaza, and more than a third of all fatalities across the occupied Palestinian territory and Israel. With a further 1,000 children reported missing in Gaza assumed buried under the rubble, the death toll is likely much higher....

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

It’s barbaric, but that’s what happens when a nation can commit ethnic cleansing with impunity.

It’s as simple as that.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Honestly a little surprised he lived so long. That dude liked to party.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I’m not judging. I’d have done the same in his shoes.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

It’s not grim at all.

It’s likely, given his history. At the same time, this is a silly argument. Even if he were still alive he wouldn’t care what either of us thinks, so let’s not waste any more of our breath on this.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Thank you for your opinion. I appreciate it.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

THere’s some truth to that.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

No one motivated by partisanship is going to hear and properly assess any critique of their candidate.

It’s why Trump supporters are losing a ton of money on his scams and why we have a brain-dead creep in the White House now.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Same.

I’ve paid $10 for spotify every month for years and it’s always been a great service and the algorithm does a good job of finding me new music that I like.

But most of this stuff can be pirated or bought piecemeal without bothering with a subscription.

And that’s what we’ll do when it gets out of hand, as we all know it will.

FlashMobOfOne, (edited )
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Obama changed the military’s criteria for civilian deaths so he could pretend his numbers were lower.

I don’t know that I’d call it an opinion. Civilian deaths are an eventuality we have no choice but to accept, especially here in the US, where we’re making war in six, seven, or eight countries at once and it’s normal.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

You can always count on warmongers to talk big when they know with absolute certainty that they’re never going to be the ones in danger.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

I love Next Fest… but I’m really waiting for the Halloween sale on horror games.

I totally forgot how terrible a non-ad-free YouTube experience is

So I’ve been using youtube ad blockers since pretty much when ad blocker extensions were first available. Lately though I’ve been getting hit more and more with these messages that YT was sending out every 5 or so videos telling me that adblockers aren’t allowed. No problem, just gotta wait 5 seconds to x it out and then...

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

Brave Browser gets around YT’s ads.

FlashMobOfOne,
@FlashMobOfOne@beehaw.org avatar

You’re right. It’s more like 1983, when we poured money out for Saddam Hussein because his guys were going to fight Iraq for us.

That worked out well.

But, in the end, it doesn’t matter. There’s a blank check for war and I’d just love it if people cared about the extent to which we neglect our own people in service of it.
