Yeah I agree, orange shirt in the comic is being needlessly dismissive. Like of course queer people are often obsessed with labels, we've typically been deprived of models and community so finding that in a label is going to be exciting. And for some other queer people, labels can feel restrictive, reminding them of the rigidity of the cisheteronormative mold they're trying to escape in the first place.

Labels can be empowering for some and restrictive for others and that's fine, as long as we all respect each other. Like I've had people try to prescribe specific gender labels onto me when I'm more comfortable leaving it at non-binary, that's not cool, just like it would be lame of me not to respect when someone says they're genderfluid or any other more specific label under the non-binary umbrella.

I think there's a distinction that can and should be drawn between descriptors and labels. Most people fit the descriptor "cisgender" but you'll be hard-pressed to find someone using it as an identity label.

Likewise, looking at definitions, non-binary genders are usually included under the trans umbrella, but many non-binary folks, myself included, don't necessarily use trans as a label. If someone is talking about the trans community, I still relate and feel included in the conversation, but I don't use the word as a label for myself.

Why do you think it's silly?

Even if it were silly, is that sufficient reason to not treat others with respect?

Appreciate the transcription! I'll try to remember to add these to my posts from now on :)

This is one of my favourite parts of being non-binary; it's such a great filter for weeding out people who lack empathy.

People who immediately go "OMG that is SO COMPLICATED sorry but I can't do that I won't even try" when they learn that I use they/them pronouns immediately reveal to me that they're not worth my time, and that they'll never truly see me and respect me as I am.

Why is thepiratebay not in the megathread, despite being so much better?

Whenever thepiratebay goes down, it is a disaster for me to find anything online. The megathread is next to useless, taking me to all these crazy sites that don't have a torrent option. Instead, they have individual episode downloads of 600 episode TV series. And to access each individual episode, I have to click on a mirror...

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

There are torrent sites on the megathread… You just have to scroll down to where it says “Torrents” rather than direct download. I’ll be honest, you come off as a bit entitled in this post. Calling a free resource that someone took the time to make “useless” just because you didn’t take the time to scroll down is a bit rude, IMO. Not that I think you meant to come off that way.

Anyway, here’s a link to the torrenting section on FMHY’s piracy resource list.. The link should automatically scroll down to the list of torrent sites ;)

Hey props to you for acknowledging it, we all have our moments!

I definitely feel you on how frustrating it can be sometimes to access information in the piracy community, both due to potential legal repercussions and to a certain insularity. Pirates don’t always want to share the cool new thing, because sometimes when too many people start knowing about the cool new thing, corporations will also learn about the cool new thing and want to shut it down.

1337x.to has been my go-to for a while, I rarely fail to find what I’m looking for there!

Your policing of conversation isn’t really adding to the discussion either, is it? You could just downvote, or better yet, ignore it and move on.

Anyone else enjoying the Internet better, now that they’re off Reddit?

Hadn’t realized how reliant upon Reddit I’d become for news and interesting things until after it turned to shit and I quit it. I’ve rediscovered RSS for ex., using reader apps to scan sources directly and read without all the noise—that actually came from someone’s recommendation here in the comments. I’ve found...

I’ve noticed I’m spending more time looking at content that I actually want to engage with.

I’ve also been on a huge FOSS hyper-fixation for the past week after replacing reddit with Lemmy. I’ve stopped using Youtube in favour of an open-source front end (Piped), I finally ditched Windows as my main OS and set up EndeavourOS, found an open-source Spotify front-end for desktop (psst) as well as an alternative for mobile (ViMusic).

If anyone has any other open-source software to recommend, hit me up!

This picture is hilarious, it goes in so hard on being dumb that it loops back to being brilliant.

I think it merits its own community, for two reasons.

  1. Drag Race is kinda divisive in the queer community
  2. I want to avoid spoilers

This is disheartening to see as someone who just switched to Invidious. Does anyone with more in-depth knowledge on how Invidious and similar Youtube front-ends work know if it’s possible for Google to shutdown access to their servers for Invidious/Piped instances?

the first female fictional character I remember thinking was hot was Franziska von Karma.

Wow, that is a throwback. I now want to replay through every Phoenix Wright game.

Uhhhh if anyone has resources for figuring out if you may be multigender

The gender dysphoria bible was a pretty enlightening read when I was beginning my gender crisis. Don’t let the word bible influence you into taking it as gospel, no document is perfect, but it does a pretty thorough job of explaining the different feelings characteristic of trans and non-binary people.

I accept lemonade lovers of all genders <3

Those disgusting kombucha drinkers on the other hand… /s

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

It is the primary reason for drinking lemonade. The secondary reason is to alleviate thirst, in which case lemonade is indeed suitable, but most experts agree that water is the best source of hydration.

Things that are taboo excite people, and queerness is still fairly taboo in most of cishet society.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

The anger is part of the kink for them. If one becomes an ally, queerness loses its taboo status and then they’re not as turned on. Their hornyness takes priority on our rights.

I’d say the best way is probably to post and comment stuff you’d want to see. Participate actively.

It’s harder to change a community’s vibe after its been established, so now is the best time to get some social inertia and make this into a more pleasurable space than /r/Canada.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

No doubt, I appreciate someone bringing this topic up because as you say, right-wingers will try to sabotage any healthy online community. They do seem to especially target local, provincial/state and national subreddits, which can be fertile grounds for propaganda. I’m pretty active on /r/newbrunswickcanada where there are definitely a ton of right-wing shit-stirrers trying to establish their perspective on issues.

But while moderation is important, the community has to be actively involved in making this space into what we want to see. A big reason /r/Canada sucks isn’t only the presence of the /r/metacanada types, it’s the absence of reasonable people. I also remember when /r/Canada was decent, and I didn’t leave when I first starting seeing fashy takes, because you’ll see those everywhere on the internet. I left because eventually I realized most people I could enjoy discussing with were leaving/had already left.

The more one participates in an online community, the more one can attract like-minded people to that community.

@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

We’re talking about aggressively anti-social people who don’t really believe in governance and humanism at all.

…so, your typical modern conservative?

I say that slightly tongue-in-cheek, but I do stand by that the people you describe are almost exclusively going to be right-wing.

That’s definitely not to say that there’s never been any online communities negatively impacted by left-wing politics. I can’t even remember the number of subreddits I used to enjoy that have been overtaken by tankies/Stalinists/Maoists/Soviet-apologizers.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

This is a good point, but I’d like to add that we should also distinguish between lower-case conservatives and the Conservative Party of Canada.

I know and love plenty of conservative people. We have different ways of seeing the world, and believe different methods to be best to achieve our goals, but ultimately we all want everyone to live happy, fulfilling lives.

If you align with the Conservative Party of Canada, you are much closer to fascism than I am willing to associate with, and frankly I am too queer to feel safe around these people.

Evkob,
@Evkob@lemmy.ca avatar

Honestly, I think this is being a bit generous to the right. Maybe the right thirty years ago was as you describe, but not anymore. Major right-wing institutions have done little to nothing to push back these people supposedly “adopting a right-wing persona”, because they realized these people are an amazing way to push the social narrative to the right and amass more power.

I think respectable right-wing politics are dead (or at the very least, on life-support) in a post-Trump era. The Republican Party was initially pretty hostile to Trump and his style of politics, until they realized they could exploit it to garner more power.

I highly recommend watching Innuendo Studio’s video on YouTube, The Alt-Right Playbook: You Go High, We Go Low. The whole series is worth a watch, but this video in particular shows how good faith attempts to reach across the political spectrum are easily exploited by fascists.

I imagine they’re referring to Fox News and similar outlets describing the current situation with forest fire smoke as “liberal propaganda”, and implying that the dangers of smoke inhalation are false, a leftist hoax.
