Wow, this goes deeper. A fresh Edge browser does show the link post. A old Edge browser doesn’t. All browsers with strict privacy settings don’t show the link. Firefox in Private Mode and with Adblock doesn’t show it. Edge and Chrome in private mode don’t show it either. A fresh chrome doesn’t show it. An older Installation of Chrome does.

Reddit is doing something very strange.

Edit: It seems some browsers showed the messages when they were fresh in the cache. Obviously they are displayable for a fraction of a second before getting shadow-filtered.

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

do you see the message with the link to lemmy.world too?

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

NSFW seems reasonable though there is so much porn on Reddit I wonder what they are thinking. But normal Links? That is pretty low. But well, it is Reddit. Only X is worse.

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

Well as the banning is instantaneous I guess it is from Reddit itself. The post just never shows up. Simple tricks seem to bypass the filter: https://lemmy(dot)world/post/3375662 (Reddit filters their biggest competitor) gets through

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

I updated the original post, it is not Reddit but Reddit HFY.

Gawd, the way Reddit tries to shadow ban is like a five minute hack for me to counter with a tiny perl script. It helps absolutely nothing against bots but annoys normal users.

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

I remember they were filtered even by Reddit because people couldn’t see where the link led.

Using Unicode-Chars doesn’t help for Links :-)

There is a stupid alternative: I now link my Reddit-Wiki (yes, my 30something stories have a Wiki) and put the link there. I have no filters on my Wiki ofcourse.

The Second World would have been the soviet block. There is no second world today. The third world though is real. By definition the US will be always first world as the first world is defined as the pro-wester with heavy industry. No matter how people live in this world.

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, back in the cold war that was actually the common perception anyway even while it was initially meant differently. So no harm done using this easy adaption.

Crass_Spektakel,

Once I cared about preinstalled bloatware. As long as it is inactive and small I stopped caring. The named apps together aren’t even 200MByte.

Good question… you will easily find information about predators being scared by human voices. The screeching though… I think I learned it from a kids educational show back in the 1980ths. Also at least around Germany there are tons of alarm systems using acoustics to hurt intruders. They usually operate around the common screech frequency of females and are really nasty. Even hearing protection does little to tone it down. I have seen videos of people with hearing protection simply throwing up after 30 seconds of exposure. The problem, I have no idea how they are named in English. I know them as “Akkustische Keule”. Maybe Acoustic Club or Sonic Deterrents might ring a bell?

As harshly as lethal weapons are regulated (even carrying knifes is highly regulated) around here… non-lethal is laughable regulated. Pepper Spray free to own and use at 14, even free to carry at school, Tasers, Acoustic Systems (I don’t think there are portable ones), Microwave-Systems at 18. The last one is especially nasty, comes in a version which looks like a phaser from Star Trek, range easily 50 metres and they burn like hell by directly stimulating your pain receptors. No lasting damage and the only reason they are not yet available at 14 is the demand for more tests. Tried most of them, some voluntarily, some involuntarily.

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

That is exactly what I was looking for. Thanks, I’ll ping your links into the story.

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

Well, adult men simply don’t hit the sweat point with their screeches. 😁

I intentionally left the males out of the story, for the Invasion force they simply didn’t matter. I carefully even avoided why they didn’t play a role because for a short story it really would have just distracted. Might be interesting to write the story from the human side. Sadly the story got so little upvotes on Reddit and Royal Road that I am a bit demotivated right now. A zero effort story like “Two cruisers with ammunition” gets 600+ upvotes and stories like “Day of the Fat man”, “The Tale Bearer” and “The Screechers” end up with 20-30… 🤪

Your question why I made this story is valid and made me wonder where my idea came from. I myself am a straight boring man, quite some hulk at 190cm and 120kg but if you ask me who is the strongest person I know: My Grandma. The horrors she survived, the incredible deeds she accomplished and the warm heart she had would make “Schindler’s List” look like a kids adventure.

The idea behind “The Screechers” was loosely inspired from a book named “The Power”, suggested by Barrack Obama, where all women suddenly could produce powerful electricity with their hands. The moral behind the story is actually brilliant, sure women start to turn the world upside down. Writing itself was also good although pretty naughty and sadistic at places, but definitely thought provoking. I just disliked that everybody in the story was “unlikeable”, plain Walking Clueless and Humanity What the Fuck. Also for a studied electric engineer a lot of techno babble sounded like Hogwarts magic. As it left like a bazillion plot holes open, I played around with the idea for a bit and came up with “Screaming would have been a better option”. Still, if I remember it after all these years it must have been better than a lot of other books I read meanwhile.

I had forgotten about the book and my idea until my eight year old niece let lose. Oh, you should have seen her smug grin after everyone was like “Outsch that hurt”…

I also have a little writing lingering around under the title “The Diplomatic Battalion: Gunboat Diplomacy in the 29th century” where the diplomats have bodyguards in mech suits and for size reasons they are mostly manned by small females. Some high tech is better with small sized humans. Technology is a powerful equalizer.

Hopefully I find time to finish “Diplomatic Battallion” over the next winter, until now I only have five experimental chapters.

You might enjoy the Honor Harrington series. Ages ago I read the first two books with a believable, competent and no-nonsense female lead character. It is not HFY but definitely good space opera / MilSciFi / action / likeable characters / goodbadguys. Because of age the used books are quite cheap.

Edit, wow, around 40 books already? Pretty successful.

Iris the Missile

Iris the missile online. Target acquired. Function initialized. Propulsion engaged. Ascent nominal. Flight path calculated and synchronized. Iris will travel precisely to its designated coordinates. Iris must hit its mark with accuracy and efficiency. Guidance system is operating within Expected Parameters. I am alive....

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

I guess you never heard of the Iris system before :-)

The Iris-T is a new German missile system which has an astonishing 100% hit rate against Russian missiles in Ukraine, even “unstoppable” hypersonic systems, far superior even to the Patriot system (which by the way was a join project between Raytheon and Diehl). The developer Diehl Systems stated that the system would in theory be able to intercept any missile no matter the speed (I guess at long as it is not close to c) and even ballistic intercontinental war heads in terminal approach. Basically SDI on Steroids. The missiles are rather cheap (due mass production around €150.000 per piece). Two main problems: Not enough production capabilities yet as it was rushed into service, still ramping up production and the low range of 25 to 40km of the ground based systems. Though there is a version for western jets with a range of up to 120km and the same capabilities. The Iris-T is using thrust-vectoring and a fighter aircraft can fire the missile at every direction, even backwards, without the air craft itself changing course. It can even be used to shot down enemy missiles approaching the very jet or close by air crafts. Currently AWACS systems are escorted by Typhoon jets carrying these beasts and I wouldn’t wonder if the FORTE drones have an Iris-Escort too.

They are, together with Patriot, Arrow 3, Skyranger and others part of the ongoing EU defence program of an “EU SDI” alias European Sky Shield Initiative (ESSI), and are planned to stop an massive missile strike of up to 2000 missiles at the EU. I am not joking but the master control network has the interims nick name “Skynet” after the mad computer from the Terminator franchise.

I never doubted that the Avatar/Sticker was cute and harmless. It was the game it came from. Shit, I am getting old. I can remember when a poster of Madonna with deep cleavage was considered “risky”. Well, the time before the internet…

I brought my mother once to hospital with a bad stomach. Slipped a punch line from scrubs. The female doctor countered it within the same second perfectly from the show, a assistant behind us added the next line and I finished the roundabout. My mother looked around us, understood the joke but not where it came from - she hated Scrubs deeply from her heart - and we all told it Scrubs was just the thing.

It is all about content and bragging rights. Everything else just distracts.

People consume media for fun.

People create media for feedback.

Feedback can be Upvotes, Money or stupid hats.

Your community is your live blood.

Everything else doesn’t matter.

Yeah, the C64 is so much fun because it is so different. Really something else. It feels so… raw and full of surprises. I did program a lot on it. I also own an Amiga (two actually, a 1000 and a 3000) but they are so far ahead of the C64 that you can not compare them. I have Web, Mail, a ton of Unix stuff and more on my 3000. It pretty much feels like a modern system just a really slow one. Loading a JPEG with 1024x768 in 24bits - the highest resolution my Amiga can display - takes like 30 seconds ;-)

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

I posted there already :-) because r/worldbuilding had his “thursday don’t post day” or something like that. I didn’t even consider Lemmy an alternative before.

I don’t want to rain on your parade but I’ll do it anyway: The numbers of active posts and members in Lemmy communities, even in the most active ones, are mindbogglingly low in comparison with Reddit, even in comparison to somethingawful what I still consider the dirty cousin of Reddit.

All the numbers are just two sizes lower than Reddit and then there is the atrocious web interface. I have stopped counting how often my posts got eaten, the reply button didn’t react and general stuff didn’t work at all.

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

I love the premise. Couple of things, you need to make it more clear that she is the witch after they met in the bed room. For you as an author it is very obvious but some readers tend to be… blunt. Also you mention the males name only late and only a few times. This makes him faceless. When you write about the daughter nearly nodding of it sounded from the context like the witch was nodding of. The rest though is fine wine.

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

That was my second HFY story and the first one I actually put some effort in. Image my stupid face when it hit 3000+ upvotes on Reddit in less than one day… upvotes on Reddit really make no sense :-)

Seven Days of Fire, another very well written campaign against alien fantasy races. Series is complete. www.reddit.com/…/oc_seven_days_of_fire_prologue/

Crass_Spektakel,

How about allowing links to external HFY stories, so we can link good stories from people not yet posting here?

At least for the time being until people start posting their own stories here.

Maybe in an “low hanging fruits” topic so we don’t get a gadzillion posts with one single Link inside.

It is a fickle decision though as it could move c/HFY away from what made r/HFY popular. But then in my humble opinion at least the “low hanging fruits” topic shouldn’t hurt anyone for a while.

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

sounds lovely.

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

Yeah, got beat on creating c/HFY by exactly ONE hour. Congrats! And yes, I am no ashamed of spamming my old stories here. Makes me “most upvoted c/HFY clown” for a day or two and gets the bandwaggon rolling.

Crass_Spektakel,
@Crass_Spektakel@lemmy.world avatar

Please add a short explanation to the rules or somewhere else:

It is not possible to link from Reddit HFY to Lemmy HFY directly due to shadow-filtering. The whole message with the link will be only visible for the creator. Working around with eg https://lemmy(dot)world/post/94994 though works as long as the user edits the link while copying it.
