This is plainly incorrect, please see the other responses.
FOSS stands for “free and open source software”, but they functionally mean the same thing. So what you’re saying is:
So your claim is that the open source definition by the Open Source Initiative which is battle tested and widely used by distributions, major git hosts and legal enitities is a cherry-picked definition?
Sounds like you’re cherry-picking your definition to hide that you simply have no idea :)
I don’t get what you’re trying to say here. All terms used have a clear definition and other comments pointed that out already. The definition on open source is very clear.
I’m just diving into self-hosting, and I’d a way to have a constant cloning of my phone in the background, preferably FOSS. Does anything like that exist?
Would installing an OS on an external ssd and booting into that to run pirated software while blocking access to other drives in your system or physically unplugging them be one way?...
I have a collection of music in flac format and now I want to store them on my phone. flac files get too much space and downloading all the playlist in mp3 takes as much time as finding decent and real high quality flacs (there is plenty of songs on internet which only look like 320kbps and are not really high quality). So I...
I’d also opt for Fedora if your device can handle it. Using Ubuntu is a bit of a headache with snaps and also Fedoras packages are newer. Fedora also has a stricter SELinux policy than Ubuntus Apparmor afaik.
If you’re really brave you might want to check the package versions of immutable distros like Guix, Nix and Fedora Silverblue. They might lower your headaches in regards to maintenance thanks to eg better rollback.
Hello, I’ve been using manjaro xfce for a few months now and I’m starting to wonder if I would enjoy any other distros more, I’m not really a technical person but I really do enjoy linux so i’m willing to learn new things....
If you’re not a technical person, Fedora. I’d choose GNOME (ie the default) or KDE Plasma Wayland though. Wayland is far more secure than X(org), and that’s what XFCE uses.
I only use free VPN extensions or apps and I fully aware of the limitation of this. I use shabby ones, which don’t protect and probably sell my data. It slow and I can’t have only a few location. But I can’t get around the idea that people can pay for a service to refuse to pay to a service. Please help me understand.

Showering every day is not good for your skin and very likely not necessary if you’re not doing physical labour. Washing yourself is a different story.
Without having read anything about WEI at all: Microsoft already supports something similar by using Windows Hello (Edge). It’s using your TPM to make sure the hardware/OS wasn’t tampered with. On Android, this is comparable to safetynet/Play Integrity.
On a general note, since 196 over on reddit is reopening, I feel what this community needs is stability. The server is running really well (for me), it’s not blocking tor or vpn traffic, it’s not behind cloudflare and the admins are not bigots. The stuff you as sublemmy(?) owner should care about is keeping post quality high, and taking care about hostile users. This community is nice, and I’d hope I can come here for some nice memes for a long time. That’s just my rambling 2 cents.
Also: Moss if you’re reading this, how about making a chat with the mod team (maybe even public for transparency) where you discuss stuff like this first? Idk if Ada and Kaity are hosting a matrix server too, but feels like a fitting platform. Maybe add a public, an offtopic room and a secret mod room too and combine that into a matrix space. It would avoid making noise here if it is not necessary.
I would just like to share a story, and probably an opinion as well. When I was doing my STEM undergraduate degree a couple of years ago, I took a course in which I had to use MATLAB. I won’t disclose too much information, but it was a course involving computation....
Question for those who have already seen Oppenheimer: I have been avoiding watching it because I don’t want to see some guy celebrated (or focus on their emotional struggle) whilst ignoring the immense number of innocents killed by the weapon they were fully aware of creating. Is this concern reasonable? I like Nolan’s movies in general, so if it wasn’t I’d gladly watch it
