A community-based study on the social roots of #youth#suicide and some sociological suggestions for #suicideprevention and #mentalhealth promotion. It is a one-of-a-kind. The book works to illuminate how this community struggled, what it did right, and what lessons we might learn for other communities struggling.
What a pleasure to speak with @FranciscaOrtiz for the 'Knitting Networks' podcast and chat about my research into spatial and social networks.
The podcast provides amazing features of scholars investigating social networks and is a joy to listen to - so many fantastic colleagues talking about their work!
I've created a new key memo in our Obsidian vault. It synthesises many existing notes and describes how our studied data centre site in Germany is related to production networks in Asia-Pacific. In fact, the network view helped me explore and theorize relations.
But it's a real danger that such a view indicates finished research or fixed notions. It's worth reflecting on the performativity of such a tool. Reminds me of Gephi issues. @sociology@sts
As far as I know, most #sociology journals don’t have a fediverse presence, but do have RSS article feeds. Would accounts that mirror those feeds be something folks would follow or is RSS/email already filling the need?
Sociological research is often criticised for providing "excuses" for people doing bad things, preventing them from being rightfully blamed and punished. This special issue looks at social scientific debates about such "exculpatory" consequences:
"Reality exists only to the extent that it is recorded; ultimately, truth is nothing and the document alone is true".

Although early days, we have introduced a dictionary of sociology. Rather than give simple definition, we collate definitions from across academia letting academics speak for themselves. Standard dictionary definitions rarely capture complexity. By collating definitions, it not only gives a wider definitional insight, but gives students and academics a definitional base from which to explore, critique etc.
New paper published!
In 'The challenges of hybrid work: an architectural sociology perspective', we - my wonderful colleagues Matt Thomas, Rosica Pachilova and I - scan the emerging literature since 2020 and compare it to a small sample of participants with lived experience of hybrid work.
This line in Barbara Baig's writing book triggered a memory: "most adults are very self-conscious about learning anything new."
Years ago I took an ink painting class at my local arts center. A middle-aged woman cried because she wasn't immediately good at it. To me this is a convincing case for #ungrading.
Asking #DigitalHumanities scholars or social scientists working w/ the internet...
I've been a #solarpunk for a while now, but how would I do research on the community itself? I want a "vibe check" on what people are talking about, the sorts of arguments we tend to have, what texts/theories/people we canonize. I follow a lot of folks, but that's a mix of my interests+auto recommendations. Any way to get a view driven by my research questions, not The Algorithm?
As a (relative) latecomer to formalised #arthistory, and as a critical #politicaleconomist, I found his book Art Worlds to be one of the most plausible & convincing analyses of the social milieu in which art is produced.;
the book dovetailed really well with my own political economic position (hence why I liked it) & helped me configure where my interests intersected.
If you've not read it, I really recommend it; great stuff
Do you manage expected #student work load, care for their #workload, rely on #students to self-manage their #work#load? Or, how do you relate otherwise in your #teaching to the hours students are to engage in studying?
In the sociology of family, the various family types sometimes overlap or become conflated due to the use of differing terminology for what are essentially the same thing. This is generally the case when it comes to stepfamilies, reconstituted families, and blended families. Here, I look at the definitions, types, myths, and issues of the three family types.
'The construction of Latin America’s media spaces was not the result of
particular struggles for participation and debate. From the beginning, these spaces were derived from elite power, being conceived as (a) commodities to be exploited by the private sector and (b) mechanisms of political and societal control'
Nur mit einigen der Tools habe ich selbst vertiefte Erfahrung, bin also weiter dankbar für Eure Ergänzungen und weitere Erfahrungsberichte. Was wären Eure Empfehlungen?
Transgression is an essential concept for understanding many of today's political dynamics.
POPULISM AS A TRANSGRESSIVE STYLE by Théo Aiolfi (2022).
"As a consequence of its performative turn, the critical literature on populism has dedicated increasing attention to its sociocultural and stylistic features. Among the most prominent concepts underpinning this approach is the notion that populism relies on the “flaunting of the low” or the use of “bad manners.” This article engages in an extensive discussion of the way this concept is used in the literature and showcases its main limitations. In replacement, I then suggest the alternative concept of transgression, understood as the violation of a norm, which has the substantial advantages of being more flexible and versatile as well as less reliant on a normative binary".
DONALD TRUMP AND THE RATIONALIZATION OF TRANSGRESSIVE BEHAVIOR: The role of group prototypicality and identity advancement by Ben Davies, Carola Leicht and Dominic Abrams (2022).
"Overall, the present study identifies the rationalization of transgressive leader behaviors as a novel pathway to their continued support. We also identify identity advancement as a key driver of this effect. These results provide an important extension of deviance credit and indicate that the role of group prototypicality in the context of group serving leaders may need to be reconsidered. These results also have worrying implications for the nature of transgressive leadership and demonstrate how unimpeachable such leadership may become once it is established."
