Is free speech in trouble on college campuses?

The controversy over university presidents who gave lawyerly answers in Congress about punishing students who call for genocide reflects the reality of college free speech codes that try to both encourage debate and stop hatred.

A expert provides some needed context:

We’re in agreement there. My (unsolicited) opinion is three very qualified professionals got railroaded by histrionic idiots in the public and in Congress engaging in performative self-aggrandizing and hypocritical bullshit.

Thanks for saying so, and you're exactly right: performative. I find it hard to believe that their legal advice didn't include distinguishing first amendment issues from school conduct rules.

Such awards tend to reinforce the idea of 'individual excellence' in academic research and push collaboration to the background. I'm immensely grateful to my co-authors, collaborators and network.

Populists, autoritarians, nationalists and fascists of the world keep conquering public opinion by sowing the seeds of hatred, anger and fear using brute digital force. We figured out long ago how these not-too-subtle strategies work, and yet it seems we can't do anything to stop them. This is disheartening.

How We’re Going to Fight PragerU’s Indoctrination of Children

conservative pseudo-educational organization “PragerU” is.

Their kids’ shows are designed to look exactly like any other kids’ show, and their videos are full of charts and data. They know what they’re doing.

We’ve produced a booklet called A Student’s Guide to . it offers a basic introduction to critical thinking and shows students how to analyze and debunk PragerU’s lies.

@yogthos This text uses several manipulative techniques:

  1. Biased language: The phrases "media hysteria", "alleged Russian atrocities", "rampages by Israeli troops and settlers" all communicate the author's perspective or bias right off the bat, rather than presenting facts objectively. The strong language manipulates the reader's empathy and emotions.
