Christmas Cheer - from The Dancing Master, Henry Playford, 1703
Chestnut - from The English Dancing Master, John Playford, 1651
Comfort and Joy - named after the chorus of the ballad 'On Christmas Day', first printed c1700/1, and better known to us now as the carol 'God rest you merry gentlemen'.
@bookstodon My #review of The Essex Serpent by Sarah Perry is now live! Expected a gothic or maybe folk horror story, but instead got a story about how our connections to others can change the people around us, for better and for worse. Very much a pleasant surprise.
@bookstodon My #review of The Night Ocean by Paul La Farge is now live! This was a really compelling read in ways that I hadn’t expected, but was pleasantly surprised by.
Can any #histodon or #histodons#help me with finding some sources on battles during the #mexican#revolution , hopefully with #maps of each battlefield and the description of how the battles happened with specific troops?
Its so easy to find #historical information on other #history in the #1910s but surprisingly hard here.
I have an idea for 3D modelling and wish to see if its feasible.
Re: authentic & fake #Jews: the tragic #Gaza war has predictably led to bad #history going viral:. European Jews are descendants of medieval #Turkic converts--#Khazars-- thus have no #historical & #genetic connection to the land of #Israel
A myth, promoted by a combination of the cynical or stupid, sadly embraced by the naive & uninformed
Sadly relevant, as I will give a virtual talk about this at Indiana Uni this week.
Thrilling conclusion to the Wolf Den trilogy, in which the Vesuvius eruption we've all been waiting for finally happens, but the real story is how life goes on after.
Discovered in a random #usedBookStore on #VancouverIsland: "Lisette", by Eglanton Thorne and published by The Religious Tract Society, London, some time before 1890 (probably printed 1889)
A simplistic morality tale set in earlier 19th century France. The story is not the point, but rather what it says about the late-19th century English and how they viewed their world and their place in it.
@bookstodon My #review of #SanctuaryWithKings by #KathrynMoon is now live! This was a fantastic conclusion to the Birsha Arc, and I liked the plot and the characters of this book more than those in the first two of the series.
Today's indie author review! Chaos and Conjurations by K.L. Noone & K.S. Murphy:
"An entertaining MM romance set in a Regency England ... builds well on the plot arcs of Spells and Sensibility. Recommended, especially for fans of alt-historical fantasy romance."
Today's release: Sebastian Nothwell's MM historical fantasy Fiorenzo:
Fiore has a plan. Find a wealthy elderly gentleman, delight him until the end of his days, and retire on the inheritance. It’s the best outcome a low-born courtesan in the city of Halcyon can hope for...
Today's queer spec fic release: Eric Alan Westfall's eclectic MM collection 3 Gods, 2 Bets, 1 Texan:
A pair of competitive trickster gods strut into a Texas bar…and the Dragon King gives his seventh son an unknown Caravaggio for his hundredth hatchday. What could go wrong?
I’m #reading via #audiobook Devil’s Bride (#book 1/Cynster but 2nd chronologically). I think I first #read this #historical#romance#mystery in 2009 when it was released & have listened to it before, too. When reading on paper or ebook, it’s possible to skip the epically long sex or nearly-sex scenes - pretty sure one of them lasts over 20 pages. This one is neither my favorite nor my least favorite of the Cynsterverse. #books#romancelandia#bookstodon@romancebooks https://amzn.to/45RSI7h
Today's queer indy release: Hayden Thorne's MM historical fantasy/gothic horror book The House of Ash:
A dark and deadly curse haunts a dying family, manifesting itself with neither rhyme nor reason in its frequency except for its victim: a male child...
If you love Middle Grade Historical Fictions, you need to check Light comes to Shadow Mountain, a stunning story about a young girl determined to light up her Appalachian community.
