Receiving this prize truly is an honour, and I'm particularly grateful to the institutions (and mentors!) that have supported me in pursuing research across established disciplinary boundaries, including:

Maastricht University (FASoS), University of Helsinki (HCAS & Aleksanteri Institute), Center for Advanced Internet Studies (CAIS), NWO, Helsingin Sanomat Foundation, Leibniz IOS Regensburg, Leibniz Institute for Media Research (Hans Bredow Institute).

Such awards tend to reinforce the idea of 'individual excellence' in academic research and push collaboration to the background. I'm immensely grateful to my co-authors, collaborators and network.

Populists, autoritarians, nationalists and fascists of the world keep conquering public opinion by sowing the seeds of hatred, anger and fear using brute digital force. We figured out long ago how these not-too-subtle strategies work, and yet it seems we can't do anything to stop them. This is disheartening.

@fheinderyckx @communicationscholars Great case study using hate, disinformation, Whatsapp, and field organizing in Indian politics. Feels pretty similar to Brazil and elsewhere.

Like you, I'm still waiting to hear what the most effective counter strategies are.

How We’re Going to Fight PragerU’s Indoctrination of Children

conservative pseudo-educational organization “PragerU” is.

Their kids’ shows are designed to look exactly like any other kids’ show, and their videos are full of charts and data. They know what they’re doing.

We’ve produced a booklet called A Student’s Guide to . it offers a basic introduction to critical thinking and shows students how to analyze and debunk PragerU’s lies.

To be fair. some of those issues are not propaganda. They're actual facts. Russia didn't have a major part in the slave trade as far as i know.

It's the same as if i was talking to Wiccans and pointed out Iceland never burned women as witches. That would be true.

I might leave out that's because they mainly thought witches were men, but my words would not be propaganda.

Americans consume a lot of dangerous stuff. No shame, though. We’re lied to. Propaganda is powerful.

@plount @KerryMitchell @Enema_Cowboy @NickEast @bookstodon @litstudies @histodons @politicalscience well, since the USSR had worse censorship I guess censorship doesn’t exist in the US

@plount @KerryMitchell @Enema_Cowboy @NickEast @bookstodon @litstudies @histodons @politicalscience I have no standing to dispute your U.S.-Russia comparisons. Indeed, they fit my priors. But for many in the U.S. today, there is an important distinction to be made, between ideals and conduct. This is at the crux of the dispute between MAGA and the 'mainstream'.

NYT STOP AS STOOGE TO AI & PALANTIR HYPE!!!

"Our Oppenheimer Moment..." (w/ AI)--NO!

NYT a WMD Neocon Stooge Mia Culpa Moment re: Militarized AI--YES!

Opinion page, but too little context for a CEO piece (of...) so self-servingly using a popular film to hype for Palantir, a company that benefits like no other from DoD use of AI & the militarization of AI!
