Iowa Senate File 538- gender transition procedures related to minors strips providers of Medicaid funding from Sept 18 forward and doesn't allow Medicaid to be used by clients for gender affirming treatment. If a counselor has a transgender client, and has used the gender dysphoria code and many others (7 pages of ICD codes) then they will be retroactively stripped of funding. I am so angry for clients and for providers. As a clinician, I feel so mad that states are telling transgender youth in lower SES that they can't be who they truly are, and now they can't even talk to a counselor. I just can't. @socialwork @Email2TootBot

Another post about this cool book I'm currently reading: "The Sol Majestic" by Ferrett Steinmetz. Gotta love that name.

Have you ever wondered how a top-rated restaurant might function on a space station? Light years from any planet? Well, Ferrett Steinmetz thought about it and came up with:
-artificial gravity used to cook things using the heat generated by enormous planetary-scale pressures instead of direct heat
-stasis fields instead of fridges (duh) but also speeded-up time field used to sneak a week's worth of work into an hour
-an alien sourdough culture that MIGHT be sentient

All of this is an excellent backdrop for a story of a young boy finding (gay) love, seeking independence from his parents, and exploring questions of philosophy, truth, capitalism, and marketing. It's not , but it has that homey vibe.

Btw, you can follow me on bookwyrm, I'm @SallyStrange and I read a lot.

Not feeling well, so not really around, but today is Intersex Solidarity and Remembrance Day, and I have plenty of resources for this day that I'd like to briefly share! :intersex_flag:

(Responses will probably only happen later, but feel free to ask)

@bogiperson @bookstodon hi! Do intersex people usually have one of the big 2 genders? Or usually non-binary etc.? Thanks! :)

bogiperson,
@bogiperson@wandering.shop avatar

@justpeachy @bookstodon Hi, sorry I missed this! This has been changing a lot recently. Even a decade or so ago, the vast majority of intersex people had one of the two binary genders (at least publicly), but a lot of intersex people have been coming out as nonbinary, so it's very much in flux now.

Also more trans (any kind of trans) people who are intersex are now out about being intersex when formerly they (we) weren't.

Hope this helps! :)

At the flea market, Mike buys a Billy Bass wall hanging that lip syncs “Take Me to the River” and wags its tail fin in perfect time. Mike says if you’ve ever seen one, you know they’re hilarious and quite lifelike. I’m pretty sure we had one of those singing bass fish in my house growing up. I think it sang “Don’t Worry, Be Happy.”

Here’s one I found on an eBay listing: https://www.ebay.com/itm/325229789294

I finished Lawn Boy by Jonathan Evison, and I think it doesn’t touch as much on issues as these people who challenged it think. Yes, there’s the whole notion of sexuality and trying to figure out what feels “right,” but there’s more of an emphasis on social class structures and how those who are rich and privileged are always gonna be rich and privileged while those who are poor and disenfranchised will probably always be poor and disenfranchised. Yes, some may be able to climb their way out of the crab bucket through a combination of perseverance, luck, and a bunch of other different factors, but the rest won’t be afforded the same opportunities.

There’s also a lesson about not being a bystander to your own life—that if you want to succeed at something or make a change, you have to become the driver/pilot of your own life. You have to stand up and fight for yourself; otherwise, no one will do it for you.

I give it 5 ⭐️.

Today in Writing History September 10, 1960: Alison Bechdel, American author and illustrator was born. She is most famous for her “Dykes to Watch Out For,” comic strip. And for her “Bechdel Test,” originally intended as a joke in one of her comics, but which has since become a routine metric used by critics as an indicator for the active presence of women in a film.

Today's queer small press review! Apprentice's Luck" by K.L. Noone:

"A gentle tale about a young magician coming into his power, and finding love along the way. Throw in a little court intrigue and a plot to overthrow a good ruler, and it's quite an enjoyable read."
