In Versailles, two weeks after Russia's brutal aggression on Ukraine, leaders vowed to take responsibility for our and strengthen sovereignty.

Since then, we have taken action to live up to the call. ↓

Jump into the hemicycle of the European Parliament in Strasbourg!

From this point of view, President von der Leyen will deliver her annual speech for the State of the European Union (SOTEU) on 13 September.

SOTEU happens once per year, and it is the moment we look back at our achievements and look forward to the future ahead.

Be part of the moment that charts the course of our Union's journey!

How's your work-life balance?

One year ago today, the Work-Life Balance Directive entered into force, setting out minimum standards:

🔸 Introduction of paternity leave,

🔸 Strengthening existing right to parental leave,

🔸 Introduction of carers’ leave,

🔸 Extension of right to flexible working arrangements.

The law on Work-Life Balance ensures parents and carers can care for loved ones without sacrificing the love of work → https://europa.eu/!tf43Vq

I'd start from calling it life-work balance ;)

@EU_Commission And Poland is still lagging on implementing this. Shame that we don't have stricter timelines to get this to the people.

@osma @darnell I believe the concern is the right to be forgotten hasn’t been tested in court for many if any federated platforms but people have used this rule to try and get their accounts deleted.

On mastodon deleting an account still keeps some identification for security and platform reasons and deletes when federated are extremely lossy - probably only about 85% effective and there is no assurance that remote post and account deletes guarantee a delete on the remote system when you can land on any type of fedi implementation.

I had two people try and claim GDPR right to be forgotten but ironically to protect myself I had to move their accounts to another system to track compliance of requests and cover my butt for any legal pursuers. They were running a fraud scheme.

Multilateralism is essential for a peaceful, prosperous and sustainable world. 🇪🇺 🤝🏻🇺🇳

The UN and the EU are examples of effective cooperation in tackling global challenges such as climate change, poverty and human rights.

Today President Ursula von der Leyen hosts the EU-UN Retreat in La Hulpe, Belgium.

By harnessing the power of cooperation, we are breaking barriers, finding innovative solutions and making remarkable progress.

PedroSC96,

@EU_Commission Accelerate the integration of countries in the EU. This is going too slow and Moldova and Georgia need help and protection from russian aggressions.

@EU_Commission including our brothers & sisters in the global south. Please, during your retreat, can you repent of drowning them in the Med as policy to grab the easy racist vote. You aren't in power just to be in power, or else you would be pointless. With them, we are strong. Without them, we are miserable elderly spendthrifts. The reality of climate change is what needs addressing, not the fantasy of "white replacement". Acting on fantasies brings ruin. Tell the truth & act on it. Thanks.

Europe swept by blistering and potentially record-breaking temperatures

A blistering and deadly heat wave is sweeping Europe, potentially bringing record-breaking temperatures and raising serious concerns about the impacts on people’s health, especially as the continent welcomes an influx of tourists.

Parts of Spain, France, Greece, Croatia and Italy are all facing intense heat, with temperatures rising above 40 degrees Celsius (104 Fahrenheit).

In Italy, temperatures could reach record-breaking levels. Sardinia and Sicily are expected to be close to the current European temperature record of 48.8 degrees Celsius (nearly 120 Fahrenheit), according to the ESA.

All onboard a night train! 🚆

Rail is one of the most sustainable means of transport we have, but cross-border trips account for just 7% of the kilometres travelled by train.

This is why we are supporting 10 pilot projects to create new international train connections in the EU.

They will help us improve the quality of service and make them a viable option for more people.

By 2024, the USB-C port will be mandatory for all portable electronic devices in the EU.

This means that you will soon be able to recharge most of your devices with the same charger, making piling up bundles of cables a thing of the past.

Not only will this make your life easier, but it will also reduce greenhouse gas emissions and e-waste.

Learn more about the common charger here: https://europa.eu/!hwjj3G

@EU_Commission what about things like solar powered electronics? Would those require a USB-C port or is there an exception for those

yacc143,
@yacc143@mastodon.social avatar

@EU_Commission Not wanting to be nitpicker here, BUT this would be only true if there were only 100W PD compatible cables out there.

Which many people would find slightly cost prohibitive for simple uses.

Still the progress is there. Now if we could get somehow USB-c cables labelled what they really are, OR somebody invented a simple and cheap enough device you can plug a cable in to check what properties a cable has, …

Then one could stop rebuying cables to make sure to meet requirements.
