@seanbala @bookstodon Afterwards, we went to Uncommon Ground, a local coffee shop that makes its own bagels and roasts its own coffee. We got one of the best mochas we've had in a long time and a bagel with some schmear. Worth checking out if you ever visit!

@seanbala read a book while @dohappybelove did some painting. A good afternoon that we needed at that moment.

A watercolor painting by Ruchika done at Uncommon Grounds. It is inspired by the first photo and has the following text: "Sometimes, reading or sketching or flaneuring is not a part time activity. It is absolutely necessary to restore one's weary soul."
The roasting machine at Uncommon Grounds. It made the whole place smell wonderful.
A wider shot of the cafe with Ruchika on a leather couch painting.

Exactly one year ago today, I unboxed the first copies of Naming Gotham. I got to spend a year sharing on podcasts, giving public lectures, & doing news interviews with PBS, Daily News, Hellgate (+ so many more). What an adventure! Thank you all for the support.

P.S. Books make great presents! @histodons

SHIMMERING, GORGEOUS, WISTFUL meditation on life, love, art, and loss set against the surreal cityscape of New York in the 2020 COVID lockdown. Everything is vivid, everything feels deeply true. A MINUS

A BIZARRE, CULTISH COMMUNE, centered around some extreme psychoanalytic theories, hiding in plain sight in Manhattan brownstones, with adherents as famous as Judy Collins and Jackson Pollock. Intensive research and interviews tell a wild story. A MINUS

This was a really fun podcast to record. I mean, who doesn't love the opportunity to talk about how great Jackie Robinson was (and I definitely have a soft-spot for Adam Clayton Powell Jr.) @histodons https://www.battingthebreeze.com/beyond-the-baseball-color-line.

On 11/5/68, Shirley Chisholm became the first Black woman elected to Congress. "Fighting" Shirley Chisholm rocked the House to its foundations. We all benefit from her trailblazing legacy. Daniel Mainwaring and I talk about Naming Gotham. We dig deep into what the names NYC gives its roads and bridges tells us about who we think we are, and about who gets to decide what counts as history. Plus, Dan experiences the "joys" of traffic on the Major Deegan. @histodons https://open.spotify.com/episode/2hDiVtiQ3WvnEV4jLDNcyX?si=4fPCfvofTduyyZ5wx33uXg

Written with kaleidoscopic verve and delirious wit, Brooklyn Crime Novel is a breathtaking tour de force by a writer at the top of his powers. Jonathan Lethem, “one of America’s greatest storytellers” (Washington Post), has crafted an epic interrogation of how we fashion stories to contain the uncontainable: our remorse at the world we’ve made.

When does he NOT look “glum”?

Via Adam Klasfeld:

He's flanked by his lawyers, looking glum, and taking slow, deliberate steps before sitting at the defense table. 1/…

2/ Klasfeld, cont’d:

Key piece of context:

Justice Engoron just noted in court that "nobody asked for" a jury trial, which is why he'll be presiding over Trump's $250M civil fraud case without one.

📚 Just finished reading: When I Was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago (1993)

An autobiography, it is the first of three installments, followed by Almost a Woman and The Turkish Lover. Beginning with Santiago's life in Macún, a sector of Candelaria barrio in Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, it details the circumstances that led to her mother bringing her and her siblings to New York and adjustment to life in America.
