To use or not tu use the term "#megafire"? 🔥

After Linley et al. (2022) suggested a standardized definition (> 10,000 ha extent) to reduce ambiguity, a new perspective by Stoof et al. (2023) recommends not using the term at all in science:
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/geb.13791

I'm a fan of clear definitions and standardization of #terminology, but at the same point, also wondering if we really need a special term for fires of a certain extent?

Canada just evacuated a city of 20,000 people because of the wildfires devastating the country, but when people turn to Facebook for emergency updates, they get caught up in Meta’s news ban.

It shows how little the company really cares about its users.

"Global burned area is decreasing, so does not exacerbate " - did you ever hear this argument, possibly continuing to label reports on recent catastrophic wildfires as "alarmist"? 🔥

This take was recently also published under the title ""Climate Change Hasn't Set the World on Fire" in the Wall Street Journal (https://www.wsj.com/articles/climate-change-hasnt-set-the-world-on-fire-global-warming-burn-record-low-713ad3a6).

In my opinion, this presents a misrepresentation of the science and reality behind the global distribution of wildfires (1/4)

Apply Raman spectroscopy to cores and experimentally burned samples to reconstruct fire intensity changes throughout the past millennia- sounds like a great project!

Last week I had the chance to talk about Siberian #wildfires at #Hokkaido University's Arctic Research Center! 🔥❄️ One aim for my stay in #Sapporo is increasing collaboration of Japanese and German high latitudes research, and I'm very grateful for this opportunity - already made some new connections!

If #paleofire is your thing, e.g. the reconstruction of millennial-scale trends of fire intensity, find the talk abstract here:

I just got back from the grocery store, and the fire smoke is so bad. My eyes are hurting. It is just gross out here. Coming home, I had a news alert on my phone warning that the air is hazardous. I agree.🤢
